TR's musicianship is truly one of a kind. He conceived the entire arrangement and has a specific vision in mind, it's like watching Picasso paint a masterpiece. May sound silly, but his musical arrangements are so finely orchestrated, he's painting music in color!
This is one of my favorite Nine Inch Nails songs and there's something about this performance that keeps me coming back every so often to listen again.
I love this song. I've loved it since it came out on The Fragile when I was a kid 20 years ago. I still think this is one of the greatest songs. It's so powerful on so many levels. I can't stand when people say oh yea, it's the 300 song... no, no it's fucking not.
Me too, some of those humans never even heard of the band until “300” came out. Some people just live under a rock, I guess it’s not their fault but, they are missing out!
All dedicated fans to a band are complaining with the same sound you did .. You cant like the sea for just the water m8. The 300 theme is driving your mind to a different kind of raw power when you hear this.
This is a revelation. Robin is the sonic equivalent of a freight train ripping through the musical landscape. It is such a privilege to see the passion and effort these gentlemen bring to this music.
Watching this really brings home how many moving parts this song has and the level of complexity to NIN's music. Trent has a very strong work ethic and attention to detail that shows in every one of his concerts if you have been lucky enough to get to one. Truly a talent that will many will strive to emulate.
I last saw this video when I was 16 (about the same time this video was uploaded). I'm 31 now. I'm reminiscing the days where I could just listen to NIN and Tool (and related bands) and learn to play their songs.
i can't believe the talent this guy has. not only in creating music, but the visual images that come along with his art are awesome as well. the guy is also well-versed in programming and an aggressive businessman who continually thinks of new ways for his music to reach everyone. he's a living legend.
Mega goosebumps over here. What professionals...but it's interesting to see how Trent has to really walk his guys through the melody in the beginning. There's no questioning who's got the bulk of the talent in that room. Trent is an absolute, unadulterated genius. One of the few left in the rock world who's still out there writing. Depeche Mode, Radiohead...what happens when they're gone? I wanna believe others will emerge & take their place but my head says "don't bet on it".
I literally discovered this song while leaving for work 2am in the morning. My young kids play lullaby music on the Amazon dot, while checking on the kids before leaving, I heard this song playing from the dot on a lullaby playlist, heard it play a few more times... now it's imprinted in my mind associated with my young kids sleeping.
Most great songs have one musical element that's absolutely perfect, that you couldn't imagine a better version of... Trent achieves this for 4 instruments here at once. The bassline, drumming, guitar parts and piano parts are all individually astounding brilliant examples of how to elevate each instrument, having all of those in the same song is spoiling us.
Carnage_Rules69 there was a DVD released of the tour, but to me it was very underwhelming, due to the overall poor response to the fragile. I was really hoping they would play more from it but still focused heavily on tds and phm. I had a ticket, but my friend, who had my ticket, bailed on me and took someone that I guess was cooler. He was a dickhead anyway. Sucks I missed the show though. I still laugh at the memory of all the kids wearing "where the fuck were you" shirts in high school.
Sat in on rehersal the following Friday. It was even better than this one. No one makes music like Rez, he is a pioneer and truly a musical & lyrical genius.
This is just amazing to watch what goes on while Trent directs the music and it's so inspiring to watch. Thanks for uploading this on RUclips. This was something I didn’t want to miss. - Nail Head
God this is beautiful, inspiring, full of energy and emotion all in one. What would the world be without you Trent? This is the stuff bands are made of kids, so learn from it and dig deep. Sick, so sick. nIncredible!!
I hope a higher quality version of this and any other behind the scenes video TR has in the vault make it into the fragile re-release that's been done for a few years now but has yet to see the light of day!
@rbhu7 This was originally posted on the official website after the European Fragility Tour 1.0, when the 2.0 tour started - the website changed to all white with black text and contained EVERY music video, in addition to clips like this. Some of the other great bits were Down In It in Europe with Danny Lohner screaming like a madman, and Somewhat Damaged. It was during this time TR began answering fan questions and blogging. I'd peg the time around '04. Hope that helps.
nine inch nails live is always just great. trent reznor is one of the most brilliant rock stars ever lived. @jcrow62: I'd love to watch a NIN-rehearsal on day as well :)
I use this song as an introduction every time I go on stage, to this day. Started in high school, running for class president: I had the lights lowered, then Just like You Imagined came on, low at first, volume slowly increased. then the blue gels and spotlights start searching... then a fog-machine that I didn't have permission to use would get to full blast, and as the song ramps up the first crescendo, the curtain rises, and just when the song drops down into that heavy first drop, I have have my staff carry me out on a raised, throne-like palanquin, while strobe lights go nuts, and the red gels come on, and false pyrotechnics go off, and I wave to the crowd as I am lowered to the ground in front of the podium... as the song continues in its intensity, I take off my cape, and I make thankful & triumphant gestures to the crowd, until the chaotic piano part comes in... that's when the crazy effects are lowered... the volume fades... that's when the regular stage lights return, and I begin my speech-- a rousing speech of passion and war! At the end of the speech the spectacle was repeated in reverse and abbreviated. Of course, I won the Junior Class High School Class-Presidency. ...which i subsequently declined when i discovered what the position entailed... bor-ing... And that was my story. Now, my only ambition in life is to write a song just half as good.
I will say it again as I have said it many times before, this is the best instrumental that has ever been written, No suprise that is was Trent Reznor that composed it. What a Musical Genius!!!
whos here in 2024 ?
well, we all are I suppose.
we‘re in this together
I am here every morning

You've apparently never listened to music with more than 4 notes. Imagine what happens when you have 11.
@@Joshforbes87 Touché, Joshua
@@Joshforbes87 🙄
No doubt he is amazing. But this is generally how a band leader operates
@@Airfarts_ Not even close, he wrote and performed all the music himself on the albums. He is trying to get other musicians to play his parts.
This is one of my favorite Nine Inch Nails songs and there's something about this performance that keeps me coming back every so often to listen again.

Yeah me too

no other song comes to mind at this level. there are some great songs, but not at this level.

But strangely, he is not credited on The Fragile. Perhaps this video is a rehearsal before touring?
@@brianolson5262 I think that's right. He was their touring guitarist.
Modern day Mozart
he certainly "ripped through" GNR's music .....one of the shittiest guitar players ever.
He is my guitar hero 😍

Truly a talent that will many will strive to emulate.
He has such a clear idea of what he wants to hear. Like Hitchcock but with music.
This was the best NIN line up. Trent Reznor, Danny Lohner, Robin FInk, Charlie Clouser and etc.
this is such cool footage to see him work like that...and def his masterpiece...this song kicks ass
One of the best bass lines of all time. This is truly my favorite instrumental ever.

The field general calling the shots. A rare glimpse into the world of NIN.

Well he is the one writing the music. The other guys just bring his vision to life. Sometimes they add as well.
If you call that walking them through the music, well they seem to absorb quickly. Took all of one take to do it perfectly.
Aaron Prebenda - Sure but you’ve gotta believe this wasn’t their first rehearsal...
Take their place you say? Hmmm...
@@djadams3356 Lol fair enough, nobody will replace them. I take your point. 😎👍
Right, he sounds more like a high school orchestra teacher in the beginning. I'd forgotten he was classically trained on the piano.
such an amazing song. every part. the vocal climb might be my favorite. just wow
watching a real artist at work is always amazing

SO EPIC. been awhile since i've seen this and always mind blown of everyones talent, especially reznors. (robin finck ftw)
Masterpiece in the making. Ace job NIN
Watched this years ago. So happy it's still here!
This is how music should hit... Raw brutal and beautiful
Best band ever period
This song is one of the best I've ever heard... So in love with it.
The year 2020 and it's still fucking amazing.
Best instrumental ever.
Awesome.......one of my favourite NIN tracks.
Great to see the genius at work!

Trent knows how to channel his way of music to his band mates perfectly. You can see it at the final session, it comes together seamlessly.
This song was released in 1999 and it still rocks!
And still it rocks
Wish I could've seen the Fragility tour. Love the Fragile album.

It was a really good tour. A Perfect Circle opened at the show i saw. Any night with Maynard and Trent is a great one.
It was amazing. Was there for the opening of the second leg of the tour at the Lakeland Civic Center, of all places.
It was beyond great. I saw it open the second leg of the tour at the Lakeland Civic Center in Florida.

I love Reznor's instrumentals. I wish he'd do an album of nothing but. Thanks for uploading.
Guess you got your wish lol

Man i think Trent is the definition of a Multi-instrumentalist
Just blew my MIND with that rehersal!!!
ten years later .... takes me back
goose fucking bumps. sheer fucking genius.
Every time.
Beautiful to watch
Freakin deadly... one of my favourite vids on RUclips
An inspiration to all bands man! WoW!!!
Thank you for posing this. Missed this tour thx to life. I now feel less shitty about that.
3:25 is that what I think it is? a theremin! love this song even more now
that's gotta be a young allesandro cortini, much of the sound design and synth work comes from the vibe that he and trent create together.
oops wrong era, would be charlie coulson most likely
I still think of cortini as integral to nin despite most of my favorite work being produced before he joined.
God this is beautiful, inspiring, full of energy and emotion all in one.
What would the world be without you Trent? This is the stuff bands are made of kids, so learn from it and dig deep.

daamn, i couldnt imagine it will sounds this good live
Yes, it was used in that movie but it was originally released in the mid nineties
How incredible would it be to actually be able to sit in on a session like that. Would be a dream come true.

just when the song drops down into that heavy first drop,
I have have my staff carry me out on a raised, throne-like palanquin,
while strobe lights go nuts, and the red gels come on, and
false pyrotechnics go off, and
I wave to the crowd as I am lowered to the ground in front of the podium...
as the song continues in its intensity, I take off my cape, and
I make thankful & triumphant gestures to the crowd,
until the chaotic piano part comes in...
that's when the crazy effects are lowered...
the volume fades...
that's when the regular stage lights return, and
I begin my speech--
a rousing speech of passion and war!
At the end of the speech the spectacle was repeated in reverse and abbreviated.
Of course, I won the Junior Class High School Class-Presidency.
...which i subsequently declined when i discovered what the position entailed... bor-ing...

This is probably the best NIN video on youtube
This isn’t a song it’s an experience.
THIS. IS. SPARTA!!!
This is a bad ass track, even without the 300 imagery. It's hot to see how it was conceived.
cool. super fucking cool

great one
Trent is such a badass. Give the man a keyboard and he'll make the baddest shit you've ever heard.
every time i watch this video it makes my hair stand up and sends chills down my spine

This is religion as far as i am concerned. Trent's music is so awe-inspiring and powerful.
