Great video with excellent demonstration. Panasonic must be aware of this AF deficiency. Guessing they can't fix it without copywrite infringement or major redesign.
Kai, you mentioned it doesn't seem to make a difference at 24p. Try changing the shutter angle again down to 172.8 (or 173) degrees and see how that does fore your 24p footage.

It seems to only be a problem if your shutter speed is below 1/60 second. That's why there is no difference when you're shooting at 50P...

Statement Prod no. G85 does not supper shutter angles, if you change manually the shutter speed makes no difference

A new firmware 2.3 has been released. Autofocus has a faster response and stabilization looks smoother.

can someone tell me why autofocus ONLY works on 60fps for me? the camera just does not focus automatically at all when i use other framerates.

I've found it works great with native glass, but the sigma 18-35 is still basically meh.
yup right nativ lens works well, only in 30fps but ok...

60P works just fine; many claim better than 30fps.

Kai, great video (and can’t wait to try this!) but... do you have any idea why Synchro Scan isn’t accessible (from any mode) on my GH5?!
IDK if u figured it out by now or not lol, but I was able to get mine to work by making sure exposure mode was set to M in the creative video menu. The synchro scan was no longer gray, and I could change it.

So I have a burning question... and not about the autofocus fix, although great job Yoda Yeo! If, before this fix, everyone was running around shooting with a 180 degree shutter, what did you do to knock down the light at larger apertures, and especially if you're shooting V-log outdoors? The two main ND solutions have major drawbacks for me: 1. Vari ND filters - these are great until you change lenses and also have to spend the time unscrewing the filter and screwing it back onto the new lens if you remember to do it. This also assumes that you have adapted all the filter threads of all your lenses to the same size so you can swap filter between lenses, or I guess the super expensive option is to buy Vari-ND for every lens which is great until you're in a low light situation and forget the ND on the front of your lens. Option 2. - Matte box and ND filter set. Aside from matte-boxes being either really expensive, or really cheap and very badly made to the point you just want to throw it down the stairs; Once you have attached the matte box (presumably with LWS bars), the problem here is that the whole rig becomes bigger heavier and generally less portable for run and gun style shooting. It also makes the camera REALLY conspicuous so throws the option of street videography out of the window. Although a good matte-box stops direct light from hitting your ND (which is SO nice). I ask this question because after trying both these options for ND I have found myself often just throwing the 180 degree shutter rule out of the window if I'm in a situation where I don't have time to be messing with the gear. I make sure the shutter is at least expressed in degrees so that the shutter speed is always a factor of the frame rate. But to be honest no one really notices when I do use faster shutter speeds (clients), especially if the content is destined for nowhere more than social media etc. I find that the ability to maintain a good exposure at the aperture you actually want, rather than need, to be much more impactful on the perceived quality (by my clients) of the footage than any motion blur or lack thereof. Would love to know peoples' thoughts on the matter, but you know, only from people who actually earn money from what they shoot. No pixel peepers or lens collectors please. Thanks
What does 179 degrees translate to in terms of shutter speed for 24 or 60 FPS?
I learned the calculation from EntreWoman TV:
(360/180) x 24fps = 48 shutter (180 degree rule)
(360/179) x 24fps = 48.25 shutter
(360/179) x 60fps = 120.6 shutter
It's just a slight difference which many cameras can't do.

Rob Dunfy yeah. Next one down is 150 at 8 bit. My cards can handle 400 and they aren’t ultra fast (I have a v60 I think)

Frank Stonehouse yes. Change camera! No miracles there 😂 I use a canon for blogging and a Panasonic G80 for vídeo shooting when don’t need AF
As another proud owner and RUclipsr as well, I do agree that the GH5 is the best camera for what we do. There are things that they can do on the software side to make it better.
For one get rud of that mountain and flower focus distance ranger. It's better to have what the S1H has with the actual measurement.
Two, give us more paid upgrades. I can't just think that the only paid upgrade was VLOGL. Which tells me the camera can do more. I bet a higher dynamic range in the shadows and more.

The G9; better processor same sensor, but it won't work with the audio adapter. Panasonic is just stopping it.

An interesting "fix" to a real problem but I don't think that I'll be rushing out to buy a GH5 as a consequence but then, video isn't my current priority :)

I like the way it was explained and then thrown away when the shutter speed was changed. "Doesn't work at 24fps or 50fps" well no. Not 179º.

ive seen that but sometimes its not always about selling but i also understand that.
Have a fixed focal point, focus mark and appropriate lens and don't jump around like a gimp. Shoot 4K on a 14mm (28mm) crop in for tighter shots, even use the 6K video mode and you're set. Autofocus should only really be used for photos if in a hurry or lazy photographers.
The Panasonic AF still can´t compare to Canon Dual Pixel os Sony...
True! Also, if this fix doesn't work at 24p it's pretty much useless.

It's sad that a 2K dollar camera has such huge huge AF issues. In that regard when you compare it to A7III, it is like future and my grandpa's old camera where the future is Sony and Lumix is the past. They really need to fix that...
I agree that the AF on the GH5 & GH5S is not perfect but there are other things that make a good camera. The GH5/S beats the A7III in otherways like the better colour, more robust codecs & great slow motion. If you are only comparing AF I would say that Canon's DAF is ahead of Sony but that doesn't mean the 5D4 is a better camera than the A7III overall. Jake
You are absolutely right however you have to consider the fact that A7III is, in the words used by Sony "the base full frame camera" as is not marketed as something amazing, unlike GH5 when it was promoted. GH5 is packed with features and is an awesome camera but AF is, unfortunately, one of those things that if shit, can break the camera and render the rest of the features pointless. Especially when it comes to content creators....you should not need to correct AF using touchscreen etc. Btw, compare RX100 MK5 IBIS to GH5 and you will see just how poor it is even when you walk. Do not even try to run with it..... In terms of DPAF from Canon is amazing but unless they embrace future and the mirrorless cameras I do not think they will retain their position for much longer. Sony AF is literally breathing on their neck and in low contrast situations, it is already ahead of Canon....
And what is up with the V-log and the extra price tag? That is like an in-app purchase....lol
Personally I think it's to save the customers a bit of money if they do not want to shoot VLOG as some don't. Though agreed that it would be nice if they made it a standard :D
It's all personal preference and I agree for some users AF being bad is a huge downside but for others Sony's weaker codec's & worse colour science are huge downsides. I think we can both agree that different tools need to be used for different jobs. There is no perfect camera (especially at this price point) and compromise is something you have to deal with when buying cameras and it's down to the user to decide which features are most important to them!
Using a fixed shutter speed leaves very limited ability to set the exposure, since I often use full aperture to get shallow focus, and ISO 200 is not slow enough to cope. Yes, you can use neutral density filters, but these are too fiddly to change, and the variable ones have quality problems, from colour cast to blurring. Hence I use shutter speed predominantly as my exposure control. This has another advantage. The idea of '180 deg' shutter giving optimal motion blur makes no sense with modern TVs using high frame rate and interpolation/motion smoothing. Using a high shutter speed gives sharp frames for the motion smoothing to work with, giving sharp images without motion judder. Film purists may like the look of the 180 deg solution, but that's a fad that I don't go for! Also, with high shutter speed you can take good stills from 4k video easily using just VLC player. In short, I'm not interested in an autofocus solution that relies on shutter angel.
