    The welded seam is called a buttweld. You could get a longer life out of your bandsaws if you ground the face of the tooth as well. The gullet should be sharpened as well. The face of the tooth is what's doin the cutting. It needs to be squared up otherwise it and the gullet will become rounded after a few runs. Which in turn causes spillage of the saw dust past the band, and causes excessive heat which will result in early failure of your band. I am a saw filer the bands I work on are 11" wide with 250 teeth, 5 tooth variable pitch and the bandmill wheels are 7ft in diameter. I enjoyed your work. Nice to see something diff. Saw filing is awesome.

      It is actually the top .010 of the tooth that does the cutting, so grinding that much off the tip 10 times removes .100 of tooth height. Many of these hobby mills don't run fast enough to wear the tooth face significantly, and the partial loss of set doesn't matter much on small softwood logs.

    I hate when people advise me about a safety stuff, however I spent most of my life as an Optician and saw many patients come in with metal shavings embedded in their eyes.
    The procedure for debriding the metal is to drill it out of your cornea. Metal shavings instantly start to rust when they get stuck in your eye.
    I can't stress enough how important it is to use safety glasses when you are filing metal into microscopic pieces of shrapnel

      Been there, done that and it hurts like hell. I got caught when one tiny fleck of steel from an angle grinder job somehow got past my safety specs!! The hot spark got "burnt-stuck" to my eyeball. I was lucky & I still have two eyes.

    I see a DeWalt radial arm saw in the background, that qualifies you- in my opinion- to speak on just about any woodworking topic, mastery of that saw equals mastery of the trade, you can do everything a tablesaw can, and more, in a foot print that is only 20% of a tablesaw, even while backed up to a wall- try that with your saw table. ☺

    We sharpen in the gullets with a modified chainsaw chain sharpener. Less than half the sharpening you are getting. Our blades always seem to lose tooth set and wander in the cut after the 4th sharpening. Are you setting teeth occasionally in your method? What makes you discard? When the teeth get too thin, wandering cuts, broken blades or? We also use and like the TimberWolf blades.

    • @frankgrizzo
      @frankgrizzo  9 лет назад +9

      NelsonStudios Good questions. I'd recommend you try this method and stay out of the gullet. I'm not a blade expert but in my experience the gullet is strictly there for helping clear material and a non cutting area. Also, 10 sharpens was a generalization, I believe I am getting more then that - 12 or 13. The next batch of blades I want to try die stamping notch marks to keep track of exactly how many sharpens I get. I'm not setting teeth. I use the artistic method, If I see a tooth that looks out of whack with the rest of the teeth I adjust it. Also, by only hitting the tips you leave some original blade angle in the gullet you can use to align the grinder and keep consistent angles every sharpen.
      Every blade I have discarded has been because the metal gave out and snapped from stretching. I have one blade that is still going strong that I should have shown, there isn't much of a tooth left. It still cuts fine but it doesn't clear the material as well and it's a slower cut.
      The only wandering cuts I get are related to sloppy blade tension or real dense knots and I catch those problems in post with the planer.

    thank you for sharing . if you don not mind i spent 10 yrs as a machinist . i worked with all kinds of equipment just a heads up if you dont mind using the side of a grinder is okay IF you dress it , clean it off . here is what can happen and i do hope it does not . if you clog up the sides of a grinding wheel the wheel gets hot . a grinding wheel is nothing but grit and glue if clogged up it will get hot and release the glue . so exploding wheel can happen . again I do want to thank you for sharing .

      Walter Rider Good comment, fine job also. FYI from a retired machinist. Ever time you use a grinder, you need to dress the wheel. The wheel is not balanced, and you will get a rough

    Great video. I just got a band saw, and I need to learn how sharpen the blades.

    • @frankgrizzo
      @frankgrizzo  9 лет назад +1

      Ttf Web Yeap, depending on the TPI of your blade there are going to be different methods to sharpen. I didn't get the second part of this video finished but I'll address the smaller TPI blades when I sharpen the carbide.
      I love that grinder I have; it's quite, smooth, and it goes to full rpm instantly. You can spend a lot more money on grinders and not get any of those traits.

    • @frankgrizzo
      @frankgrizzo  6 лет назад +1

      I do it. The real fine tooth blades are kind of a pain but it's possible. Just a matter of how much the blade costs and if it's worth taking the time to sharpen it or if it's a better investment to buy a new one. With these big blades ~$45 per blade they are easy to do and worth the time.

    Interesting way to approach sharpening the blade.
    Make it shorter every time and reduce the girth as well.
    I sharpen the 3 different pitches and set the curve and depth into the blade.
    I made my own equipment that works pretty fast.
    How many times do you sharpen a blade before you throw it away?

    I have a large Laguna bandsaw which I use chiefly for cutting up firewood. The blade on it is pretty dull but I'm not looking forward to doing one tooth at a time for a hundred and fifty teeth. How about mounting the blade backwards, turning the saw on, then holding an ordinary knife sharpening stone against one side of the teeth, then the other. It probably wouldn't be as good as doing each tooth individually but it would be a lot quicker.

      That's what I do while the blade is still on the mill, actually a DeWalt 20V cordless version, takes about 7 minutes and I'm right back cutting again. I just use the log I just canted for a seat and adjust the blade so its conformable for me, sometimes I come across a tooth where the set is off and I correct that in the process.

    How can this be better ????

    Ok, here’s the problem with this... if you do not go through the whole process your losing life on your blades!! You have to set first then you need a grinder that will trace the blade contour. Just touching the top will get you out of a hard spot but that not the best way to get this job done. That’s why us sharpening guys spend thousands of dollars on equipment. Although he did a pretty good job of touch up. But!!! If he sends that thing out for sharpening it will probably get sent back with a note that says can’t be sharpened!!!

    grinding the backside of a tooth is frowned upon. You need a precisely held grinder coming down on the inside of the tooth at a 10 deg or whatever your blade is cut at and then clean a few thou out of the gullet to prevent cracking. Grinding the backside does nothing for the gullet.

  • @AndTheCorrectAnswerIs
    @AndTheCorrectAnswerIs 4 года назад +6

    This is exactly OPPOSITE of the way you're supposed to sharpen a bandsaw blade. The front of the tooth and the gullet are supposed to be sharpened and the back side of the blade tooth is untouched. The gullet should be ground to prevent the microfractures that form there from growing and spreading which can eventually cause blade failure.
