Today I go through how to set up Dirac Live on the Pioneer VSX-LX505. It's super simple. Plug in the microphone and/or enter the app on your phone or laptop. I also give my opinion on Dirac Live in this video and if the Pioneer LX505 is worth the price of admission.

I got a lx305 a few weeks ago. Just finished installing my atmos speakers and roommtreatments. Ran Dirac live and it sounds great. . So awesome. Love it.
I have the same receiver...what tripod did you use for the included microphone for Dirac Live? Thanks!
@@Romne nothing special. Same tripod I use from my camera and phone.
I love the Dirac live on the Integra receiver just set it up and watch movies , took me about an 1hr. Was really impressed on how it just made all the speakers work together and improved the sound and the clarity.
The RZ50 is amazing got one of the 1st units in the US and got it back in August from AVScience for just under $1100. I too did a quick Dirac calibration with the included mic and it already sounded way better than my Denon 3600. Then I did another calibration with the UMIK 1 and wow, even better. Will never buy another receiver without Dirac.
Right on, Jay!
I knew you'd like Dirac! Thanks for the shout out for my Audyssey MultEQ-X "magical beans". 😉 I got some magical beans for Dirac too!
Mama said they were my magic beans...
Life is all about searching for the magical beans!
Thanks for the overview. I’m waiting for my 505 to show up. I’m looking forward to upgrading to Dirac as well as Atmos in my theatre.
I have since made the change from a Yamaha RX-V6a receiver to this bad boy. The Yamaha was a great receiver but not as intuitive/user friendly as the Pioneer. I did have issues with it right out of the box though so buyer beware. Issue was the front display did not illuminate any info. I was struggling to figure out how to perform the initial setup/MCACC without anything on the screen. After a quick google search, I found out a few people have experienced the same problem. The solution was to remove the chassis cover and reseat the connectors pertaining to the LCD. Thank you for posting this video btw. Lots of key information that you've mentioned that can help a noobie like myself navigate the software.
This needs an Auro-3d update and I'm sold.
Nice new intro song.
Hey thanks! I got four more new tracks! Yeah, they need to add Auro and I’m all over it. Maybe in a $2K Pioneer? I don’t know…
@@TechnoDad I'll be on the look out for them.
Dirac Live is a game changer at $1K for the lesser Onkyo model for sure!
Yes it is!
I am very blessed that I scored one available LX505 and never been happier! it is a beast!
@@BisquetSea what are your thoughts about the fact that you cant set individual crossovers per speaker?
Oof…yeah, can’t wait for a Dirac/Focal duo review. 🤘
Woot woot!!
@@TechnoDad which best in Onkyo Rz50 maranz cinema50 and pioneer 505. Here Maranz and onkyo are in same price and pioneer is 120 dollers extra. Iam from India. Please advise.
Man I really wish Denon and Marantz would hop in the Dirac bandwagon.
Yup!
They did now
@@christucker9179Should be included at no extra charge like Onkyo and Pioneer.
I have been looking at the LX-505. The DIRAC makes it even more attractive.
Yes it does!!
@Techno Dad - i had the Pioneer VSX-933 and recently upgraded to the LX-505, ran MCACC with no trouble, tried to run DIRAC Live using the supplied microphone, from both my laptop and the phone app. Both times in spite of my best efforts in an absolutely silent media room, the measuring could not complete and allow me to move forward, because of some Signal Noise Error, so until i find a solution i've given up on DIRAC and am going with MCACC. Thankfully, DIRAC was only a small part of why i purchased the unit.
Tough to go with Dirac for HT with no Dynmic EQ and Bass Management. I have both systems , Audyssey does better for me in my HT. I love Dirac in my 2Ch room, if I only had one system, it would be tempting to go Dirac but it does lack some HT specific features. Dynamic EQ makes listening at non reference levels a joy.
I have XT32. Would Dirac be much better?
This lx505 is my first ever receiver and I love it! I wanted the Onkyo rz50 but you know🤷♂️.
Hunter, how do you like the 505,I ordered the rz50 in December and it’s supposed to be mid march or April,I might go with the 505 tired of waiting.
@@glenn4452 I went with the 505 because I didn’t want to wait for the rz 50. I couldn’t be happier with it and I truly believe I made the right choice. I do wish it had two independent sub outs instead of two shared but it’s not that big of a deal really. Bottom line though, I absolutely love it! 👍
@@truthhunter4270 ok sounds good,I wish the rz50 had independent subs, also
The three measurement is good when you need a quick correction because you are gonna be making changes in a few weeks. For example I did the quick 3 measurement before adding 2 atmos speakers and room treatments. After those got installed I reran with the 9 position. 👍👍👍
Would have liked to hear how the auto correction of dirac live compares to mcacc with the 505.
I was just waiting for this review aswell comparison between Denon n pioneer, thank you for your honest review techno dad, luv from India
You’re very welcome!
Glad to see you putting out a recent video CD.
Another awesome review, well done Techno Dad! I was a big fan of Denon/Marantz receivers, I have had 2 prior Denon's and 3 prior Marantz and when Audyssey came out - it didn't really do anything for me. As everytime the bass lacked with Audyssey. But the Dirac just blew me away! Even just with the in the box mic. I got a Umik-1 on order and just think I might be able to tweek a little more from it. The Pioneer has given me the home theater bug again, wanting to improve this or that!!! Thanks again great vid!
Is the crossover on the speakers global or can be different for speaker sets (eg front / back / atmos)? Always loved pioneer) one thing that I didn't like on my vsx-1120
I have a Denon 3700h and I’m thinking of going to Pioneer Lx505 just for Dirac , is it worth it?
@@Kenny_Edmonton absolutely Dirac is far better then Audyssey
I think you should be able to select the 9 position test spots. And just do 3 of them then move on to the next step. At least I am pretty sure that it works that way. Although you will get better results with 9 or more test locations. Awesome video btw!!!!! Very good explanation!!!!
If Denon sold the x3700h with Dirac that would be best as the x3700h measures significantly better than the RZ50. Hoping Onkyo survives bankruptcy and can get some higher end models hopefully with DLBC and Auro3D.
You have to take Amir with a grain of sand man. The back channels are not going to be clipped by your movie playing and he tested the amp in pure analog mode. None of us really use that day to day. The real world problem I had with the Pioneer vsx-lx305 was its tone and limited crossover settings.
@@missing1102 for sure. However some of the same stuff he found Gene at audioholics found on the Integra stuff of previous gen.
And now we have the 3800 with Dirac live upgrade option ❤
i just brought a new av receiver to you have to pay for dirac live
I have been eye-balling this receiver, along with the Onkyo tx-rz50... cuz, #1 they are both getting good reviews, and #2, cuz they both have Dirac Live. I really don't need a new receiver cuz I already own a Denon 3700H that I'm very happy with. But that old HT bug has been pecking at me lately. And I keep trying to tell myself, "Dude, you don't need to be spending more $$$ on a new receiver!" But my other myself... that self that yearns for more of an immersive experience, replies, "But you could always use the Denon as a back-up emergency system!" I've been on the fence with that conflict for a couple of weeks now. But after watching this review, I now see the light and the Denon will be an emergency back up system.
With this pioneer avr do i need an external amp to run the heights like the 3700h? Or no.
@@fierceeagle2003 It has 9 internal amps. So If you plan on running a 7.2.4 configuration, (11 surround speakers) then yes.
@@stevejeffery4857 thanks
Thanks for the 505 Dirac overview, I would like to know if you are planning to do a review on the 505. Had the 3700h & 4700h both of them went back to Magnolia Bestbuy, 3700h cut off in the middle of music playing and movies, 4700h right channel stop working after 3 days. I’m waiting for the rz50 or the pioneer 505. Thanks Max.
Hello… thanks for the 505 review, as always excellent !!! I’m undecided about my next AVR, I’ve tired the Denon 3700, 4700, and 2 weeks ago the Onkyo 7100 unfortunately as I previously wrote they had to go back, my set up is 5.2.2 for that type of set up what would you recommend. Is the pioneer as good as the 4700 when it comes to Atmos and separation?
Thanks, Max.
Hey Dad.....Amir from ASR claims this is a 20 watt unit.....I have the 305. Amir claims power cuts down to 20 watts after 35 seconds.
I liked the old music, but I'll give this a try
The one company that does it themselves and is good at it is Anthem. I prefer ARC Genesis over Direc any day. But I also adjust some of the curves and room gain afterwards.
Dirac will calculate from even one measurement in the PC software.
You just have to tell it to go ahead (bottom right) without taking any more readings.
Should you use a miniDSP 2x4hd to calibrate 2 subwoofers or allow Dirac to handle everything (on a NAD t778)
So is getting a 0 ms on the subwoofer normal? I was confused, I always get around 13.5 on my other receivers without dirac.
Hey, I may have to upgrade now. Have a good one. Thanks
No problem DT!!!
It would win if it had independent subwoofer outs! Almost perfect
I have 3 subs. So how would i run them?
Auro 3D is coming in the update to the 505
Really? That's pretty cool!
Awesome video thanx for you take...Going with the this receiver but the 305 model along with my Def Tech super towers.... what are your thoughts in utilizing the dirac room calibration vs utilizing my current 5.1 systems that has all like components including Def Tech center and rear surrounds???
Are you sure it wasn't the cables you were hearing? (Just kidding) I own a Denon now and will probably stay with that until Denon comes out with something that would convince me to upgrade, and if they released a super clean pre/pro with all it needs is clean 4 volt rca out and Dirac Live, I'd be convinced.
Which Denon do you have? I have a sony dh790 and im in the market. Looking at the S760h, x1700 and 2700x
@@BigDavos I own the X3700H and run it in pre amp mode. Can’t say it is perfect. All this talk of Auro makes me have fomo for not having the X4700H but I’m going to go with I’m not missing out on something I haven’t heard.
I love my LX505 huge upgrade from my Sony DH790! I used the phone app for my calibration bit I think I will go back in and do it with the computer app.
How do you recommend I set up my subs when running Dirac? The Db level specifically... I have 2 svs pb1000 pros
Hi! I would keep them both at -10 db and see what Dirac says to do, either turn them up or down.
@@TechnoDad i have a huge update about my calibration with the computer. long story short i did 2 different presets out of the 3 i can use using 2 different house curves and after switching betweeen 1 and 2 during a movie when i switched to preset 3 all my speakers connected to my 5 channel amp made a load popping noise and all my tweeters blew! avr when into diag mode and failed.... i did a hard reset on it and everything was working again... crazy stuff but i had to buy new speakers!
@@TheRayray204 wtf?! no bueno
I have a Pioneer VSX-LX305 (the one right below the 505) and it too has Dirac live. Main purpose was to get that 4k120 sent to my LG C1 OLED panel. I tried Diract room calibration in a 10x10ft room, and it failed every time phone app. Maybe i'll try it with my laptop next or my ipad? So i'm living with the LX305 with MCACC... gonna try dirac live again!
Same issue and same receiver I have. I retried it after raising the speaker volume and it worked with my iPhone.
Forgive me if I missed it. Dual subs or one in your setup. Independent control of dual subs or does it see them as one unit?
Now for the really niche. I don't see DSD processing on their site and I assume it does not process and one would need an external source to process to PCM.
How is the sound quality and bass compared to Denon 4700 please. And also were you running the Pioneer with external power amps. Thank you.
Next step for you, dirac with bass management, that is a huge step aswell :)
I don’t believe the lower end AVR’s offer the Bass Control $500 upgrade path. Is that correct?
@@brucecarter6205 that might be true :). But the bass management is still a pretty huge step. But then more expensive
@@nimotech8008 for sure. I still need to add multiple subwoofer Bass Control on my HTP-1, but it’s sounding pretty darn good without it atm.
@@brucecarter6205 for me it tightened up my subwoofers alot. It is worth it:)
Yeah, not sure I want to pay for that...I wish my AudioControl AVR came in, otherwise I would have bass management with that piece.
But Pioneer doesn’t have the auromatic upmixer right? I was on the Auro3D hype train because of you guys - and now you’re recommending an AVR that doesn’t carry it? I’m so conflicted haha
Lol! Yeah, that’s the bad part about this AVR. But This AVR costs $1,500 and the Denon equivalent is $1,600. Both don’t have Auro-3D. To get Auro-3D, you have to step up to a $2,000 AVR. That’s the issue. But, if you’re shopping in this price range, then the Pioneer is a better option over the Denon.
@@TechnoDad if the extra $500 wasn’t a deal breaker and you were comparing this to the denon x4700. Would you recommend this because of Dirac Live, or Denon because of Auro upmixer?
Would you say Dirac is better sounding than Audyssey XT32?
Do you also have problems playing 4k blurays that have Dolby Vision and HDR10+ (like Godzilla KotM)? I get a black screen when I try to play those discs. 4k blurays with just HDR10 or Dolby Vision work fine
Do you think there will be an AV receiver in 2022 or in general with both Dirac and Auro 3D ? That seems to be my biggest wish
Can u make a Video for manual calibration with room Eq Wizard
Too bad you didn’t mention the computer app is terrible. After reading the comments I’m not the only one it didn’t work for.
Hey i have the vxs-lx303 set up for 5.1.4 at home and im having issues getting it to work on Dolby atmos, the feature just wont come on. Any ideas how to fix this. (I am playing Dolby atmos movies, the Dolby features are turned on on the tv and on the AVR but it just wont play on Dolby atmos)
I have a Marantz SR8012 - 11.2 Channel AV Receiver and at this point I have 4 Atmos and LCR and 4 Surround Hookup. I want to add a 2 more speakers, and I do have a Crown Amplifier. Can you help me with the setup instructions. Thank you in Advance
Nice review
Did you turn the MCACC off after setting up the DIRAC? Just got mine and was a bit confused about that.
Hey Techno Dad, I have the lx305 and I can’t seem to increase my subwoofer volume after I set up Dirac Live, very strange. Do you know anything about this?
Thanks!
Hi Thanks for the video. I have the 505 and sorry if this has been asked but, Can someone tell me how to download dirac to my computer to use it like you did in the video? I can only find in the instruction that you need to use the pioneer app to run dirac. Thanks again for the video
Does the pioneer allow the same extent of manual calibration compared with the latest Denon multeq? Can I use multiple channels for an active crossover for example??
Is it limited band dirac, or the full version? Does it have the 1 or 2 sub control option?
I'm seriously considering the LX505, but the one hang up I have is the single crossover.
My main speakers are small and are set to 80 Hz, but my heights are set to 150. I would hate to have to set all of them at such a high crossover point. Does Dirac override that and set an individual crossover per pair?
You could just eq out the bass in your heights, after calibration in dirac and your good to go
I would go with the Onkyo RZ50. Amazing unit and you can change the crossovers
I'm sure the main reason some of these companies hold on to their inhouse tech for dear life is that they don't want to pay licensing costs to 3rd party companies.
@Techno Dad / Channa!, Thanks for the great review! , is it possible to access VSX-LX505 via the web interface?
Hi! Yes, I think so. I haven’t tried it though.
Does not connect to pioneer receiver lx505
Nice! I think a MiniDSP with Dirac might be in my future to calibrate and EQ my living room 2.2 setup. I'm eager to learn about Dirac. I'm really happy with Anthem ARC in the theater so far.
FYI too, if you're shopping for some Focal Aria 906 speakers for your room, I have a couple pairs to sell that came out of my home theater room. Would be happy to discuss offline.
So from an auto cal perspective Onkyo/Pioneer/Integra is now blowing Denon/Marantz out of the water 😮
Yes! Unless you need some of the other features found in the Denon/Marantz. Although, the power in the Denon/Marantz with MultEQ-X and manual calibration is also a game changer. So it depends on what your needs are.
Auro 3D update? Do you think
I recently purchased a Denon - AVR-X1700H, and I’m curious what sort of difference would I expect to get if I were to exchange it for this Pioneer receiver. I’m new to the home theater av world, so I know relatively little and learning all the nuances can be overwhelming. I’m still within the return period, any input would be greatly appreciated.
I had the denon x2700 and exchanged it for the pioneer 305. I'd definitely say its worth it. Like he noted Dirac is much better than audyssey. I heard a lot of hype about Dirac which prompted my change so my expectations were super high and still it lived up to my expectations.
@@DNAretics I appreciate your comment. I think you’ve convinced me, I’ll be going to the store later this week to exchange it. Most likely the 305, too.
I want it, right now! so you coud totally leave denon for a new pioneer with dirac?
I want Auro-3D, so I will stay with Denon/Marantz
Do you pay additional money for the Dirac Live software?
On this AVR, no, you don’t pay anything extra.
How do you adjust the crossover for each speaker manually!! I am starting to hate this pioneer .I can adjust crossover on my Onkyo.Any help would be helpful .Also I can't use Dirac ..I don't have internet service
I don't think you can on the LX505
What sub(s) did you use when calibrating your Pioneer with DIRAC and how did that work out?
I used two REL HT1508s. I just ran it like normal, nothing out of the ordinary.
Starts at 2:20
On a Mac, do you set the mic gain all the way down? As it looks different to Windows where the gain would be 3/4 up at +15.
I set it up so the sound is audible to the mic without clipping.
@@TechnoDad Still a little confused! On Windows it's easy to see 100%, 3/4 up before the small red bar. But on my Mac it's like yours with just one big red bar. Can easily avoid clipping by reducing the master volume but there should still be a specific point to have the mic gain.
I have a sony dh790, Im looking to upgrade to Denon, Im looking at the S760h, x1700h and the 2700h. Any advice would help!
I have the Sony 790. The Denon 2700 is not going to sound significantly better at all in my opinion. I have the Denon 4400 and I miss the Sony sound. People will tell you all sorts of things about how great Denon is and how it must be you and Sony sucks. Don't listen to them. Audessy is just not that great sounding for room correction. If you buy a Denon I reccomend audioholics video on using Audyssey..it made the amp sound so much better than what it did but not 1000 dollars better than the Sony. I bought my Sony for 280 dollars at Best Buy. I paid 1k for a very nice used 4400. The upgrade will be the amount of speakers you can use with Dolby Atmos and 2.1 hdmi.
Curios how does it compare with the Anthem ARC?
It's a little bit better but not by a whole lot. Anthem Room Correction is pretty legit!
@@TechnoDad interesting I also made the switch to focal last year running a chora 7.2.4 with SVS 3000 and a anthem Av 70. saving up to upgrade to the Focal Kanta and I might go with audio control m7 looking toward to your new home focal system videos and which processor you end up with
It’s a noticeable step up from ARC…and apparently another step up again if your device offers the ‘pay for’ Bass Control upgrade.
@@brucecarter6205 sounds like you have a device that's supports. Are you willing to share which one and what you have compared? Thanks 😊
I don't get the part of the dirac setup where you set the speaker volumes... what's the simple way to explain how to get the correct levels?
That was just to set the level for the room correction. Sometimes it can be too low and the app will tell you. Sometimes it will be too high and it will clip and the app will tell you. So you have to play with that and make sure to be quiet.
@@TechnoDad so do I want to get it as high as I can without clipping or it telling me it's too loud?

@@TechnoDad A few years ago I compared "Direct" mode between the Pioneer SC-95 to comparable Marantz and Denon models. Wanted to compare raw performance side by side, ended up liking the Pioneer the most. I've used some Onkyo and Yamaha in the past and felt their audio was dry in comparison to Pioneer. I had some Pioneer A/V receivers in highschool that I liked better than the Onkyo/Yamaha ones I tried later on.
Pioneer has their Class D3 direct audio on the upper models such as the SC-95 when the SC-95 came out, I think between that and their processing the sound to me was more lifelike and jumped out at you with a bit more immersion.
I've been mostly happy with the MCACC Pro room calibration, and I've read there's a few audio folks who've like that over Audyssey, YPOA etc, for the exception of DIRAC and self calibration.
I'm really curious to know how the new Pioneer Elite sounds using the more traditional AB amplification in combination with DIRAC Live this time around.
With what I've seen so far, it almost sounds like a unicorn for what the consumer will get for the price tag.
