Hey Channa does that 505 have seperate crossover setting for speakers or just one setting for all?? That's my one gripe with my 904. Hoping that changes with the 905.
I had actually purchased this reciver but you can't individually set crossovers for speakers. It says all crossover for small speakers the same. Can you please verify
@@triplerinse the Onkyo and Integra both allow crossovers by speaker groups. So you can do LR / C / Surrounds / Heights / Back surrounds etc. You're correct the Pioneer AVR has universal crossover for all speakers
You cannot set crossovers yourself. Your limited to like 80 120 and 150 I think. I returned the 305 for that reason and I thought the dsp sucked..even with Dirac. The all ch stereo produced an echo. It was painful to return an avr with full Dirac but music on my Sony avr sounded better. Truth. I was relieved to get my Sony hooked back up. The Pionneer surrounds just did not fill , even with cranking up the dB. I am still looking. .
Great video ! I'm planning to set up a 7.2.4 system with front 3 channels powered by separate amp. Will the LX505 accomplish this? I'm concerned about your comment regarding only option is rear/heights to be externally amplified.

Yeah! I’m still using it until I want Auro-3D back again. If you can try the Pioneer and see if you like it before returning or selling the Denon, that would be the thing to do.
Can’t wait for the review. Been contemplating ordering it from BB, b/c can’t find the RZ-50. My Onkyo TX-NR809 is still kicking, rocking a 7.2 setup w/ a BasX 3 channel rocking the fronts. Looking to add Atmos!
Seems like pioneer has always been less buggy than any Dennon has ever been. Ive been looking at the Dennon 6700 but I could get the pioneer with less problems and a 4 channel amp and be less expensive and be better than the Dennon. Thoughts ?
Yeah, that's a good plan. The only thing you are missing with that X6700H will be Auro-3D and 13 channels of processing. But, like you said, it's a lot cheaper to go with the LX505 and an external amp. Just remember that you'll need to externally power the surround back channels for a 7.1.4 setup with the Pioneer.
Thank for the video. Interested in this unit but have a question about the 4 height speaker layout it supports. I have 4 in ceiling directional speakers that I want to use for heights. Two are above my listening positions and two are rear of my listening position. Does this receiver have a layout option for a top middle and top rear together? Thanks and looking forward to the future vids on this one.
Are you by any chance going to review the Marantz AV8805A preamplifier? I’m thinking of purchasing one but I can’t seem to find any reviews on RUclips.
Why dont someone put up a video in RUclips for newbies like me about the need to upgrade to latest AV hardware? What do you get NEW now compared to a 5-10 year old AVR? I got a 5yr old Marantz which works fine but wondering why to upgrade other than higher sound output & 8K video?
Hi Gardens! That's a good idea. As for your 5 year old Marantz, you could be okay unless there is some feature that you are missing. Usually, I say 3 - 5 years is a good time to upgrade as there could have been substantial upgrades done in that time. If you bough an AVR last year, it's not worth it to upgrade this year.

I know this receiver can power up to three zones (with the third zone using an external amp), but I'm not sure if it will provide 3 different airplay channels to which different members of my house could access to play different music in different zones (or if all the zones have to play the same music if using airplay). I've had this unit for about a month now and its been pretty flawless. Dirac was somewhat painful to get going but that was more on me learning the software. The question I have for anyone that has the receiver, have you had any issues with the remote out of the box? My factory remote doesn't work at all, contacted Just Audio and they sent me another remote and it didn't work as well. I made sure the IR receiver wasn't blocked and I did try switching the remote ID to all 3 options and never got it to work. I am able to control on the front end of the unit and can use the Pioneer App on my phone so I have a backstop, just would be nice to have the actual remote incase the Pioneer App ever goes down.

I have an older Pioneer LX89 that I was hoping I would be able to use in a 7.1.4 setup, and am getting new front speakers powered with a new 2 channel amplifier. Seeing this video has made me wonder if that would be possible now. I had hoped to get an Audiolab 8300A to power the fronts and the others powered by the Pioneer, but it seems now it would not be possible. Do you know if it's always been the case?
I have the Denon 3700H and I’m wondering would the pioneer elite LX 505 be a better receiver. I know Dirac is better then audyssey xt32 but is that worth it alone?
I have found one for $600 open box but not be able to use an amp for just L/R and not be able to set crossover point push it away from me. I'd have to expend my money on the X3800h
Hi TechnoDad. I just ordered my VSX-lx505 Elite receiver. This receiver has no ELITE written on it. And the display is not orange color. Are we being offered a different product in Switzerland ? Please advise
Techo Dad Rocks!...Loved the receiver but had to return it due to IR sensor not working . I was also very disappointed with the quality of the remote controller. I think I'm just gonna wait for the RZ-50 since that one has Auro 3D and is $100 less.
the onkyo rz50 does not support auro 3d. There is a rumor that onkyo/pioneer are going to come out with a rz70 and a Lx705 that will support auro 3d, but there has been no official confirmation.

Hey there TechnoDad, not sure if you can verify this but can you look into whether this receiver can help eliminate the Atmos lag that LG TVs have with the latest Xbox consoles. I currently have a LG CX with a samsung Atmos soundbar running over eArc. I know it's a bit overkill but I'm hoping plugging the Xbox into the receiver and outputting to the soundbar and TV at the same time would help bypass the Atmos lag that currently happens over eArc.
I have the RZ50 which has the same internal components as the LX505 and Integra DRX 5.4 and Series X. I can tell you the Dolby Atmos lag is there. It's a known issue with Xbox unfortunately. I get around it by using DTS:X or 5.1 uncompressed
Thank you for the review, I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-45 and this LX505 is going to be a tremendous upgrade. I do need some insight I've seen reviews where the Denon X3700h has inputs for two subs and power them independently. My question is does the LX 505 do the same? I see on the back it has dual inputs for subs but in the past it treated dual subs as one. Thanks again for your feedback.
The LX505 and the Onkyo RZ50 and Integra DRX 5.4 along with all the other models in the respective brands do not have independent sub outs. Essentially it's a Y splitter of the subwoofer channel. If you have two subs or more you're going to want a MiniDSP to time align the subs before allowing Dirac to EQ them
@@leanderzulu3494 This is the exact question I have. Should we adjust the multiple subs with MiniDSP/REW before or after running Dirac? Are there merits to either method or is it pretty clear cut? My RZ50 is in the mail. Can’t wait 👍
I just got my Pioneer 505, but Dolby Vision isn’t working on 4K blurays that have Dolby Vision and HDR10+. The LG C1 switches to Dolby Vision, but the screen stays black. Do you have this same issue?
I had a cheap Pioneer 5.1 Receiver a while back that quit on me after a few years. I was hoping for better performance. I hope they stopped up their game here. This one is enticing with the specs. I might just have to buck up and buy it. I was hoping I'd get a 9+ channel one around $750-1,000 but that's looking like a pipe dream. It'd be nice to go from 5.1.2 to 5.1.4 speakers. Great video!
You could go with the lower model, the VSX-LX305. It has 9 channels and is a little cheaper, but I don't think you get 11 channel processing and pre-outs - amzn.to/3Fr7pAb
I am really curious about the anthem mrx 1140. I know it’s more expensive. But would I be getting a much bigger upgrade for the extra money or am I better off with this pioneer? I don’t know how ARC stacks up against DIRAC LIVE
Hello Techno Dad, thanks for the video. Question since you own Anthem, Denon, and now Pioneer and possibly others. Is there a receiver you prefer especially since each has different room correction (Anthem room correction, Audessey, and Dirac). Any pros/cons would be greatly helpful as I am trying to decide between Marantz, Anthem, Onkyo/Pioneer
I got a little confused on the pre-amp outputs. Could you run 5.1.4 with your ear level 5 on an external amp and have the receiver power your Atmos height channels?
@@TechnoDad Thanks for confirming! Building my system out and unless something else comes out at this price point I am leaning towards this or the onkyo and 5 channel external amp down the road
I have this receiver and love it so far. I can confirm 4K 120 Dolby Vision is working on the XBOX Series X. Can you help me with something though? Do you have the massive volume difference between stereo and surround sound sources? Or is it just my receiver? I know some volume difference is normal, but I'm listening to stereo sources on -40 or -35 and surround sources on -25 or -20, which means I have a delta of 15-20 levels of volume difference on the receiver. It's enough that if I forget to turn it down before switching to a stereo source, it blows my ears up. I've done DIRAC calibration, and my 5 main speakers in a 7.1.4 setup are externally amplified, so it seems like a processing issue vs a power one. I haven't found a setting that will help this, and I didn't have this issue on the Onkyo TX-NR797 it replaced.
I have two of these and they work fine.. when you use the mic for the MCACC just put the mic on the seat cushion of your couch and let it do its magic.... it does seem to not give the center channel enough volume but after you run the Auto MCACC you will want to fine tune the volume/speakers anyway... I also use the " Sub " HDMI output that is just a HDMI built in splitter and hook up the Smyth Realiser A16 when its just the wife and myself I can run that for 24 channel Atmos... I like to run 10.1.13 as its got great overhead support in that config...
@@leanderzulu3494 I'm talking about the initial setup routine thats built into the AVR... you just put the mic where you would sit while watching TV or listening to Music and let the routine run thru the steps for proper playback... it measures the speakers positions/levels and other items so it knows what you have hooked into it...
@@dixter1652 yes I understand. But the whole reason to buy the new Pioneer AVR is not to use MCACC but to use Dirac. Dirac is much better. It measures the speakers and the distances and levels way more accurately and does an amazing job of integrating everything so it sounds coherent

I mostly listen to the A16 simply because its better for watching movies/TV with Dolby Atmos.... it simulates 24 channels of speakers that the Pioneer never could
I used to have the LX503, but got rid of it cause you can not set the individual crossovers, it is all or none. so if have all set to 80Hz they all have to be set to 80hz, but i found out on my Denon that my LR sound better set to 100Hz. Do you know if they changed this setting on the new 505, i do love that it has Dirac Live now.
That is one of the differences between the LX505 and Onkyo RZ50. The Pioneer has universal crossovers so you have to use the same crossover for all speakers. The RZ50 and all the Onkyo AVR allow for crossovers by speaker groups. I have my LCR at 70Hz and surrounds at 100Hz. That's what Dirac set them to
Dear all - i have the receiver now, but it seems not possible to put out audio from HDMI (eArc) to the main zone simultanious to zone 2. I have thought, when the signal is PCM, that should work. Does anyone know how I could reach this output?
I wanna see if this thing is really good. I’m look to getting rid of the V6A . I just wanna see if this would be a better definet reason to buy this. On paper it looks like it definitely would be better. But let me know Techno dad!!!
Question, if I have a movie on a USB 3.0 stick that is 4K & Dolby Atmos. If I plugged that into my LG C1 will it play in Atmos? My Pioneer Elite is connected to my TV via eARC. Any insight would be appreciated!

Only able to externally power the surround heights 2? That seems like a really major flaw?
No, the requirement to got 7.1.4 is to externally power the surround back. You can externally power any speakers, but the ones you have to externally power for a 7.1.4 setup are the surround back.

Anxious to hear your review. Just got mine, but waiting for sub and acoustic panels before I setup and run the room correction. You'll likely be enjoying yours before me. Yeah man...I wanted the RZ50 too, but I don't think it exists :) Which Emotiva did you go with? I got the A-300 BasX for my living room powering my 4 ohm Axiom M80s. I LOVE that amp. Nice Briez! Yeah, I couldn't wait for the RZ50 either.
Is it true you cannot change the crossovers with this unit?
My 505 just arrived! Waiting for my sub and all my acoustic panels so likely a couple weeks away from setting this up in the theater. This replaces the amazing Yamaha RX-V2700 that I got in 2007. Still a crazy amazing receiver with a killer amp...but needed the Atmos and ability so pass a video signal better than 1080i/720P to my new 4K projector.
Awesome! What is your new projector?
How does the Pioneer rcvr sound in comparison to your old Yamaha, I am also thinking about replacing my Yamaha 3900 with the LX-505. Yamaha always has that natural sound and the Pioneers used to have that more clinical sound like Dennon/Onkyo to me.
@@TechnoDad I got a great deal from Epson on the 3800 factory refurb with a 3 yr. warranty. I have everything now...just finishing painting and then will cover & install panels. Hopefully I'll be doing the fun stuff by next week. I don't want to install the projector and receiver because then I'll just sit and watch movies instead of finishing the room :).
Excellent review. With the front panel, 120w per channel, and two trigger outs - I would argue this is comparable to the denon 4700 rather than the 3700.
I can see that, but the X4700H is also $500 more and adds Auro-3D. So for me, that's a substantial jump up from the LX505
@@TechnoDad I’m not sure what to think of the aura-3D since there is little content a available and personally my speaker setup isn’t optimized for aura. The $500 price difference makes the pioneer that much of a better deal!

Hi I have the 503 elite and I do not have a separate amp for the rear height I am running a 7.1 and I have the fronts bi amped as pioneer has shown in the Manuel.
Finally a Pioneer Avr review!! I have the Elite SC LX904 and this thing is a beast!! 😁😁 Hopefully the 905 will be released this year with Dirac or better yet Pioneer releases and Elite Processor.
Sure thing! Is that for Mcacc or Dirac?
@@TechnoDad I think that is a generic setting that applies to both room eq systems.
@@TechnoDad this is why I returned it and was either waiting for the onkyo or see more information
Hi! I think for a 7.1.4 setup to work, you will need to have a 5 channel amp. Power the front stage and the surround back with the external amp.
I have the previous version I'm excited for the full review
Nice!
On all of these mid level avr, that need to connect to the internet are they WiFi or do you have to connect them to a laptop?

My friend, I know you said this AVR does 4K/120… does it do 4K/120/HDR? With HDMI 2.1 who knows what these products will do? 4K/120 (20.5Gbs), 4K/120 with HDR (40Gbs)… great work as always BOOM!!
What's up Home Theater Joe? I will have a video about this next week, I'm hoping. Someone else told me the manual stated HDMI 1, 2, & 3 are 40 Gbps and support 4K/120Hz/HDR. I will test it out over the weekend.
@@TechnoDad Yes it does. There is a page in the manual for changing the inputs. You will need to set them to 8k standard or 8k enhanced to get 4k 120 HDR VRR. Can't remember which setting will get it there, but you'll obviously get max bandwidth from 8k Enhanced.

You still liking the Pioneer Lx505? I’m thinking about moving from the Denon 3700h to the Pioneer for Dirac
Yeah! I’m still using it until I want Auro-3D back again. If you can try the Pioneer and see if you like it before returning or selling the Denon, that would be the thing to do.

I upgraded from my Onkyo NR809 to the RZ50 and have been super super happy. The Pioneer and Integra will sound identical
Any information for Pioneer VSX-LX905 and release date ? Thank you
Nothing that I’ve heard of.

Yes! If by 4.1.2 you mean no center channel, I think it does that.

Do you know if airplay 2 will provide multiple destinations for different zones?

Do you need to externally power the rear height channels for a 5.1.4 setup?
No, you can run 9 channels out of the box. Either 5.1.4 or 7.1.2. If you want to run 11 channels, you will need an external power amp.
@@TechnoDad Thanks, at that point the VSX-LX505 sounds like a better option for the specs and pre-outs it has. Just have to buck up haha.
I am really curious about the anthem mrx 1140. I know it’s more expensive. But would I be getting a much bigger upgrade for the extra money or am I better off with this pioneer? I don’t know how ARC stacks up against DIRAC LIVE

@@TechnoDad that’s the answer I am hoping for lol. I am wanting to get the anthem mrx1140 to power my Klipsch rf7iii LRC and move to a 7.2.4
Hello Techno Dad, thanks for the video.
Guess not.
I got a little confused on the pre-amp outputs. Could you run 5.1.4 with your ear level 5 on an external amp and have the receiver power your Atmos height channels?
Yes you can! It’s the surround back you have to power externally if you’re running 7.1.4
@@TechnoDad Thanks for confirming! Building my system out and unless something else comes out at this price point I am leaning towards this or the onkyo and 5 channel external amp down the road
Nice! I have been contemplating getting this to replace my sc-lx502 but I am still unsure about it.
Yeah, it's tough contemplating an upgrade.
You can use the Input Volume Absorber P140 of the manual. That will help each input to be closer to the same level, at the same volume dial setting.
@@smitty4ut that only works for different sources, not if that volume discrepancy happens with the same source on the same HDMI port.
Why would you use MCACC when the reason to get the new Pionkyogra AVR is for Dirac

Crutches? Are you alright, sir?
I keep coming back to this receiver, but no Auro-3D is a killer for me - especially after watching your videos and hearing how well the Auromatic upmixer works. Ugh
Yeah, I get that too! This has Dirac, but no Auro. It’s another $500 to get Auro but then lose Dirac. Decisions, decisions!
The next model up for both Onkyo (RZ-70) & Pioneer (LX705) should have it. Hopefully it comes out this spring??!!
@@danielallopenna2326 yup. Hopefully. I've been keeping an eye out. As soon as those are announced I'm placing a pre order and then I'm going to sell my RZ50
