This car is a hidden gym on the used car market. A corolla wagon in disguise. Overlooked for sure, and it's a shame because daily driving one has been amazing

I own a 2008 Scion Xd 5sp, and we bought it new. It only has 108k miles on it because I bought a new car 5 years ago, so this is our 3rd car (backup). Overall, it's been pretty good to us. Outside of usual maintenance (tires, brakes, etc), we had replaced the ignition coils and had some computer work done at the dealership. The interior has held up fairly well, and it does not rattle much. The seats are not very comfortable for more than a 2-3 hour drive. There is definitely an oil consumption issue, as it started burning a quart every 2k before it had 40k miles on the odometer. The dealership wanted to reseal something (can't remember what exactly), but I think it was an engine out job, and the quote was $3,500 for it. We passed and just add oil every 2k , and change it every 5k. We live in Portland, so the body held up quite well with no rust (West Coast car). As long as it continues to be reliable as a rarely driven 3rd car, we plan on keeping it around for a while. There are not a lot of new 4-door small hatchback manual transmission cars being produced anymore, and my wife and I like the compact utility of it.

I'd hate to be that person, but there are some factual mistakes in this video. You mention that the HP is “abysmal” even in 2009, but this is a subcompact car and could be considered class leading in its category. It was faster than the base Corolla which came out at the same time. It is still faster than its modern replacement the Toyota C-HR.
    2010 Scion: 128 HP (0-60 @ 8.3 sec)
    2010 Kia Rio/Accent: 110HP (0-60 @ 10.3 sec)
    2010 Yaris: 106HP (0-60 @ 10.3 sec)
    2010 Honda Fit: 117hp (0-60 @ 8.3 sec)
    2010 Versa: 107-122HP (0-60 @ 8.3 sec with 1.8l)
    2010: Fiesta 118hp (0-60 @ 10.1 sec)
    Mazda2: 100hp: (0-60 @ 9.3 sec).
It is also faster than some modern compacts:
    2024 Elantra: (0-60 @ 9.3 sec).
    2024 Corolla: (0-60 @ 8.8 sec).
Also the oil consumption issues affected the 2.4 liter engines such as the Scion XB, and TC, along with the other Toyotas which had this engine. It isn’t a known issue for the XD, but of course engines can fail in all cars, the 1.8 is pretty reliable.

The 2zr thats in this and the 10th gen Corolla will burn oil after 140000 if you cheaped out on oil or were rocking the 10000 mile oil change intervals while doimg city driving. The valve seals are your usual culprit, but it will also suffer from the low tension oil control ring shenanigans as well.
Im at 205k on my 2009, and its losing a little under a quart every 5000. Thats with a 45 minute commute every day (20 plus mile) one way. Thats with Synthetic its entire life. The 2zr is a peak "ok" engine, and does all its jobs very adequately.

    • @pishia1104
      @pishia1104 Месяц назад

@@Badjujubee AFAIK, the 2009 Corolla does have an oil consumption issue, but this was due to the engine control module. Did you get the engine control module checked? Toyota issued a bulletin about this in late 2009. It is listed as Safety Recall - A0J. I don't recall issues with the engine itself, the 2.4 L had problems with the actual engine.

Just got one for myself! Not release series, but it's pretty much brand new! Scion has always been in my mind because of their weird marketing back then on top of the weird looks.
Too soon for there to be any problems, but hoping it stays that way with normal maintenance.

I have 2008 automatic. Bought it used. Have no complaint. I don't understand why these car people always talk about "power." It's a little everyday car. You are not going to tow or race in it. It has plenty of power to go 80+ on freeway. Enough power to drive on a regular street and kill people. You can haul thing, drive people around, and do anything a regular cars do.

Kind of an incomplete review. The rear seatbacks adjust for angle. The car is not slow. Motorweek did the 1/4 mile at 86.5 mph and 16.5 seconds. That is close to 80's muscle car times and speeds. DOHC engines are designed to be revved to accelerate and all you did was lug around in it. It has a close ratio 5 speed and not an overdrive 5th and that is why it revs so high at interstate speeds and gets lower mpg. You lelt out the neat storage compartments in the dash. Mine has the Toyota Racing Development rear sway bar and mine handles like a GO CART!

I bought a 2009 Scion XD with 3100 miles on it in Jan, of 2010 ...it now has 200,000 miles on it and it still runs like it did in 2009. Aside from regular maintenance, battery changes, and car washings.....the 09 XD still moves with no major issues. I was told by a mechanic my engine would last at least another 50,000 miles since I'd been changing the oil every 4000 miles like clockwork. Im debating a new used car ...but since I've kept up on maintenance on this Scion .....why would i want a car payment? I think I will run this car till it cant go anymore. A+++ on reliability ..it wont win any races but will get you to put A to point B

Had a 2008 Xd. It went with the ex-wife. Was sorry to see the car go. Not the wife. She drove it way over 100K miles before buying a Highlander. I own a 2010 Xd. Went to Ft Worth to buy it. White with a stick perfect for AZ. It had just come off a lease & had 10K miles on it.
Only has 60K+ miles now. Both Xds did well. Its no speed demon but with the 5 speed it does just fine (IMO). Driving cross country thru the midwest it cruised at 85 mph with the AC blasting to keep me comfortable in July. Without AC on it gets almost 34 mpg on the freeway. Have owned 5 Toyotas since 1983. Great cars.
You think this is slow? My '83 4wd pickup was around a 100 HP with a 5 speed. It did everything I asked of it till 215K miles. Bought a '98 4Rnr because the 22r motor was just tired and did not pull the AZ hills on the I-state unless I downshifted to 3rd gear. Arigato!

The 1.8 actually doesn’t burn a ton of oil. The 2.4s do. He didn’t say which one it is. So I’m guessing it’s a 2.4. Get the 1.8 and it won’t burn up oil.

I’ve never liked the Scions and every time I worked on them they seemed like junk, almost like a Great Value brand Toyota, but for it to still even exist at 400k miles is actually pretty impressive. When the Scions first came out and everyone was getting the little cube-shaped XB’s, I hated them, and most people who bought them ended up hating them too lol but maybe these ones are a little better

@@10cpaulXA owner here. It's boring as hell on the highway but good on fuel and as reliable as the sun coming up in the east. It's actually pretty fun on twisty back roads with the . manual transmission I wouldn't consider getting an automatic. I would probably fall asleep at the wheel. If you like to roll your own gears and like a cheap reliable car, really you can't go wrong with a Scion XA. Especially if you don't drive much over 60 mph. If I drive it nice, I get about 40 mpg by the way. Over rev it and it'll get way less though.

Buy it, buy it, buy it, weird but almost indestructible as long as you don't get into an accident. Or the whole underside isnt consumed by corrosion.
