If there's one thing you can normally count on when it comes to selling cars, it's that no single product gets an unchallenged run at a market sector. As soon as a new type of car seems as if it's enjoying some success, a whole slow of second generation rivals will wade in. Being first is rarely the profitable position. The Toyota Picnic got to the medium MPV market early, but the subsequent Renault Scenic made the big bucks. Likewise, few remember the Renault 5 Gordini but everyone will know about the Volkswagen Golf GTI's success in the hot hatch market. Smart seemed to be largely unopposed with its city coupe/fortwo when it came to premium micro city cars but one look at the company's balance sheets explained why. Nevertheless, Toyota recognised when economic conditions had swung in Smart's favour and in 2009 launched the iQ, a small car to keep them honest. Here's how to track down a good used example.

Driver from the states here (Texas) and the mrs and I own two IQs. One in black and one in white respectively. We only had the option of 1.3L 4cyl engines and after adding mods such as tinted windows, tires/low profile 18” wheels and the spoiler that Toyota made, these look even better. Very sad that Toyota stopped selling these in 2014 over here. Many drivers brake their necks seeing ours on the road. We really turned heads double parking in one space at a super market meet up after work one day. Target should have paid us for the foot traffic we brought them. Sadly in Texas everything is go big or go home 😞. What a pair we make 😂.

*Love my used black currant coloured Scion IQ. I've driven it just over 30,000 miles in 3 years and it still feels like new with over 100k total miles on the engine and counting. Scion iQ is the single most reliable and safe micro-sub-compact vehicles on the market and the only Japanese Kei car made by Toyota readily available in the US.*

I’ve had my iQ four years, nothing fits me better then this car does. It only costs me £30pm insurance, I can park or U-turn practically anywhere and I can carry two, even three passengers! Don’t be fooled into thinking this car is dead slow, the gears are very long and you can build great speed!

Our family has had both Smart and an IQ. The Toyota is probably the best city car I have ever driven. Literally, the only bad thing in it is the CVT transmission. Everything else is astonishing. 10/10 would recommend (but with a manual gear)

@@thomastalks3841 I do like the car, it is well made, good safety spec and usual Toyota reliability.

I want to buy a mini car for tight city parking. I already own a Honda Jazz, but I can't fit it into hmm... irregular parking spaces. I am considering a Smart fortwo, which is ideal size wise. But the IQ is cheaper and probably a better ride. What are your experiences people with parking in historical city centers? I see that it has a great turning cycle, but it is 30 cm longer than the Smart. On the other hand, it's one meter shorter than my Jazz. Advice is appreciated!

@@Zetep I did and I finally opted for the Smart. While Toyota is a competent car, I found the Smart much more fun and nippy to drive. I already have a Honda for longer trips so the Smart made much more sense with the auto box and the smaller footprint for parking around town...

Hate to be a spoil sport but if you are considering buying an IQ with the smaller engine, make sure that the gearbox is ok, they have a common problem in that the 3rd gear becomes impossible to select resulting in a new gearbox.
