  • 1983 World 4x100m relay, with East Germany dominating. The Uk continued their success of being in the medals in major championships since 1978. That continued run stopped after the 1984 Olympics.

    I remember the 1983 World championship in Helsinki. In my view, it was the greatest Track and Field competition ever. Even though the GDR girls probably cheated, they were fun to watch. The rivalries then were just incredible between US and GDR female athletes. Now Track and Field (just like boxing) has lost the charm and attention it got in late 70's and early 80's.

      It was the first World championship, so it mattered a great deal to us , and boycotts 1980/84 at the Olympics meant that the world event was oh so special !

    I loved the GDR girls. But this should be GOLD for Great Britain. Ottey carved the way for amazing changes! That is another story....

      @@jakefiersing Doping. The GDR team, as with most Warsaw Pact countries, had doping as part of their sporting policies. Somehow winning that way ''proved'' that their political system was better.

      @@philipmarsden7104 I read so many comments, that american athletes were clean, means did not dope, because they were never tested positive. On the other hand the same commentators claimed the victories of GDR athletes in general fraud, because it was prooven that they cheated systemetically, coordinated by their government.
      I cannot follow the judgement that a self initiated fraud is less unfair to those athlets , who do not cheat and therefore loose.

    Nice to hear David Coleman's voice, be it bob-sleigh, football, track and field or whatever, he had a real depth of knowledge. Kathy Cook (nee Smallwood) was GB's greatest sprinter. Pity Sonia Lannaman wasn't in this team.

    It's Merlene Ottey on anchor for JAMAICA for me. She took the baton at the beginning of the zone and ran 🇯🇲 into the bronze medal position.

    Absolutely they r not, Angela Bailey made the final of the 100 metres here, and Martia Payne was 5th in the 400 metres here in a new commonwealth record of 50.06, and she was in the 200 metres semifinals with a 22.62. so both girls were not running above themselves; but world class, as they r world class sprinters.

    Canada is not running above themselves Angela Bailey and Marita Panye are awesome, now the last 2 legs were not good and the 3rd leg was our alternate. The next year at the 84 games we had our 3rd leg regular and school girl France Gareau who they smartly let anchor... and we ended up with the silver ahead of Britain and Jamacia.

    Seriously, it's common knowlege in Germany and has been confirmed by then athletes, that they have been doped extensivly from an early age.
    Doping was and remains a problem in professional sport.
    So there's really nothing hidden.

      They used to pass the baton upwards,which required absolite precision but allowed for the sprinters to be as close to one another as possible,while all the others did it the other way round ie. downwards.

    @karrtt1234, I am sure Canada would have won the silver or bronze had Angella Taylor not gone home after the 100 meters, and stayed and ran the 3rd leg like she usually did, instead of alternate..it really was too bad looking back at this race.

      @@maxglendale Yep, she had injured her siatic nerve in off season training (for 83) and it bothered her for the next few years. She had time after the 1984 games, with pregnancy.

      The USA team had a bad exchange in the semifinals, on the last leg, and didn't make the Final. Otherwise, they could've possibly won.

      Flojo was competing since the late 70s. She didn't just come out of nowhere. Her training intensified in 87 and 88. Also, her voice never changed as some claim. RIP Flojo. 💔

      no but the key to their consistently well baton exchanges are a credit to choosing well in advance who would be the relay runners and in which positions. only in rare cases were the East Germans putting in substitutes.

    Jeter and her teammates have never failed a drug test, so, until something actually happens, the US women's record will stand until it is broken. We KNOW the East German's previous 41.37 record was badly tainted, with several of their athletes admitting to state-sponsored doping by the East German government. I think they should keep their medals (since the record was broken anyway).

Everyone knows there are ways around it. You can’t tell me that all throughout her twenties, Jeter was an average runner, then suddenly in her 30s she’s a world champion superstar?! Please...it’s called “help”

I only said they are not sponsored by the government of USA. GDR USSR etc were rogue empires cheating the whole world and they collapsed like a garbage heap because the entire system is rotten. Any country will have cheats. A cheat is a cheat wherever from. But cheats of the GDR had their shame erased off by drug induced official brain washing. So they kept coming back, because its a democratic world and even crooks are entitled to their rights unlike in the (former USSR GDR and their bootlicking (former) states. The remainig vestiges of bootlickers are also free to use international media platforms to make fools of themselves trying to defend crooked athletes produced by rogue states.

    So the first medal of the first ever World Athletics Championships came in the Women's 4x100m relay then that means that Steve Cram's gold medal performance in the 1500m final came on the last day of those championships. Is this true?

      Cram's gold was on the final day (Sunday) but for some reason they held the 4 x 100m relays earlier in the week rather than at the end of the championships as is usually case these days so this race was actually held on the Wednesday.

      Not the first time the US Girls or Men screwed up a relay.
      U must rehearse the baton passes over and over. Just look at the 3. pass here from Auerswald to Göhr. Absolut perfection. As usual, because both girls run for the Jena club. By the way, the 2. pass was not that good, I think that alone cost 0.2 s.

    Really??...they look ok to me. Not petite (well german girls are big in bone structure) but feminine still. Quite pretty too. Not muscular like Torry Edwards, Lauren Williams or Gail Devers.

      Yes Russia has recently been proven to be fairly prolific in their drug taking. USA I'm sure are guilty in alot of athletes too. But GDR were running a state run drugs programme, well documented, all in black and white.

      Modern drug testing and an admission by some of those involved with East German athletics meant the truth came out. They had a full state sponsored doping program.
