- 1983 World 4x100m relay, with East Germany dominating. The Uk continued their success of being in the medals in major championships since 1978. That continued run stopped after the 1984 Olympics.
Brilliantly commented on by David Coleman - still going strong at 85!
I remember the 1983 World championship in Helsinki. In my view, it was the greatest Track and Field competition ever. Even though the GDR girls probably cheated, they were fun to watch. The rivalries then were just incredible between US and GDR female athletes. Now Track and Field (just like boxing) has lost the charm and attention it got in late 70's and early 80's.
Lol, probably???
@@andthereisntone3454 LOL, exactly!
Short of being completely blind, could he not see, what everybody else could?
Naivete and gullibility, is an understatement and judging by some of the comments even now, it still is!!!
It was the first World championship, so it mattered a great deal to us , and boycotts 1980/84 at the Olympics meant that the world event was oh so special !
@@andthereisntone3454 poland commentary. Do you really ?
Just like the Americans
DDR at 80'..amazing..always win..👍
Pumped full of steroids
I loved the GDR girls. But this should be GOLD for Great Britain. Ottey carved the way for amazing changes! That is another story....
Why ? They were far too slow.
@@jakefiersing Doping. The GDR team, as with most Warsaw Pact countries, had doping as part of their sporting policies. Somehow winning that way ''proved'' that their political system was better.
@@philipmarsden7104 I read so many comments, that american athletes were clean, means did not dope, because they were never tested positive. On the other hand the same commentators claimed the victories of GDR athletes in general fraud, because it was prooven that they cheated systemetically, coordinated by their government.
I cannot follow the judgement that a self initiated fraud is less unfair to those athlets , who do not cheat and therefore loose.
Nice to hear David Coleman's voice, be it bob-sleigh, football, track and field or whatever, he had a real depth of knowledge. Kathy Cook (nee Smallwood) was GB's greatest sprinter. Pity Sonia Lannaman wasn't in this team.
He knew bugger all. Appeared to be making it up as he went along, but people liked the voice...
@archiewoosung5062 your a mug woosung
wonderful girls from GDR, wonderful speaker
They were heavily doped.
I still remember Marita Koch. So fast.
LOL!!!
Doping
@@frb7968 same as Flo Jo
DOPING
Bravo!!!
DDR the Sporting-Nation ever in the World!!!
Women's sprinting has never been the same after the East German gals. Don't think they were the only ones doping then. MARITA KOCH the greatest women sprinter ever!
Yes, I agree...not even sure "she" cheated, probably no option given...but wouldn't we like to have seen her run clean?
East German fellas go on a lap of honour....brilliant from the Brit quartet
Hi Paul,
I know!
Looking back it was such a cynical farce by those cheating bastards, it's hard not to laugh!!!
Well at least they'd remembered to shave.

It's Merlene Ottey on anchor for JAMAICA for me. She took the baton at the beginning of the zone and ran 🇯🇲 into the bronze medal position.
Absolutely they r not, Angela Bailey made the final of the 100 metres here, and Martia Payne was 5th in the 400 metres here in a new commonwealth record of 50.06, and she was in the 200 metres semifinals with a 22.62. so both girls were not running above themselves; but world class, as they r world class sprinters.
Canada is not running above themselves Angela Bailey and Marita Panye are awesome, now the last 2 legs were not good and the 3rd leg was our alternate. The next year at the 84 games we had our 3rd leg regular and school girl France Gareau who they smartly let anchor... and we ended up with the silver ahead of Britain and Jamacia.
That's because Jamaica boton fail on the first change over
The powerhouse East Germany so dominant
Oral Turinabol made the difference for East Germany
Joe Ortiz boy you ain’t kidding joe!
Not Turinabol! Training,Training,Training
@ajanijam Well, then you're not listening close enough. lol
Seriously, it's common knowlege in Germany and has been confirmed by then athletes, that they have been doped extensivly from an early age.
Doping was and remains a problem in professional sport.
So there's really nothing hidden.
Angela Bailey also made the final of the 200 metres here.
The GDR girls excelled in baton exchange.
agreed all except maybe for that final in the Moscow Games in '80
They used to pass the baton upwards, which required absolite precision but allowed for the sprinters to be as close to one another as possible, while all the others did it the other way round ie. downwards.
@karrtt1234, I am sure Canada would have won the silver or bronze had Angella Taylor not gone home after the 100 meters, and stayed and ran the 3rd leg like she usually did, instead of alternate..it really was too bad looking back at this race.
Wow. Why did she go home? Was she injured? At least Canada won silver in 1984.
No she was a drugs cheat , admitted it as well
@@maxglendale Yep, she had injured her siatic nerve in off season training (for 83) and it bothered her for the next few years. She had time after the 1984 games, with pregnancy.
2:02 Nokia? I didn't know that brand was exist back then.
0:58 we know who that is 😍
Give a hand to the men running on the female track.
Grow up
I know what you mean! It seemed that in many sports there were great personalites. Alot of sports men and women are so machine like these days and they lack any real charisma....
a rare sight of a british team getting the baton round! kathy cook and bev callender also in the relay! . good too see no americans in the final!!!
Not for those who like their sport...much prefer to see them getting beaten, than dropping the baton (which I presume is what happened here)
The USA team had a bad exchange in the semifinals, on the last leg, and didn't make the Final. Otherwise, they could've possibly won.
@@joeortiz7715Nonsense!!!
Congratulations to Great Britain really won that race
Yeah the Wundermaedchen were loaded, but none of them died at 39...if you catch my drift...
Epilepsy, not drug induced...get the drift?
Yeah sure...
Look at Florence Griffith in Los Angeles, then at Florence-Griffith-JOYNER in Seoul...
No further comment needed...
Flojo was competing since the late 70s. She didn't just come out of nowhere. Her training intensified in 87 and 88. Also, her voice never changed as some claim. RIP Flojo. 💔

By dopers more to your liking, you mean?
Oh Jeter looked jacked in that race.
Doping broke the world record
Wonder if the committee claim those medals and give them to their rightful owners.
No
Nowadays the USA women are the best relay sprinters both 4x100m and 4x400m
"Nowadays"? Doesn't seem so long ago that Jamaica were on top
Better drugs that's why
Such bad commentar. GDR 3rd leg was incredible set up Gohr for stunning victory
oh so true.
drugs make you run faster. it dont get the baton round however
help you train harder, I thought
no but the key to their consistently well baton exchanges are a credit to choosing well in advance who would be the relay runners and in which positions. only in rare cases were the East Germans putting in substitutes.
Jeter and her teammates have never failed a drug test, so, until something actually happens, the US women's record will stand until it is broken. We KNOW the East German's previous 41.37 record was badly tainted, with several of their athletes admitting to state-sponsored doping by the East German government. I think they should keep their medals (since the record was broken anyway).
Sweetie, Flo Jo, and Marion Jones never failed a drug test either......yet we know about them don’t we!! So don’t patronize us with this “USA girls haven’t failed a drug test”. Everyone knows there are ways around it. You can’t tell me that all throughout her twenties, Jeter was an average runner, then suddenly in her 30s she’s a world champion superstar?! Please...it’s called “help”
@@ohhiitsjustme3445 LOL!
Many in the US, just can't or won't accept reality, to what their compatriots were/are capable of...
You made me laugh, so many thanks for that.
Cheers!
p.s: No cheating now...
@@ohhiitsjustme3445 Sweety-pie GDR drug program was government sponsored. In other words a country of crooks ( thank god its no more.) Dont connect the USofA with the actions of individuals. If there were ways of 'getting around it' would the GDR state machinery be unaware of it? Flo-Jo managed to beat state sponsored running zombies at there own game. In a different context that in itself is an achievement. Who wants to patronize a country of crooks (and running zombies)?
@@rakshitapadmajitweerakkody8350 omg ur as blind as a bat. Flo Jo was also on all the drugs the GDR athletes were on. Yes, there was no state sponsored program n the USA, but many top individual USA athletes used drugs, Flo jo was one of them
@@ohhiitsjustme3445 OMG! How do I answer someone dumber than a donkey. My vision is sharper than an eagle. I never said there are no drug cheats in the USA. I only said they are not sponsored by the government of USA. GDR USSR etc were rogue empires cheating the whole world and they collapsed like a garbage heap because the entire system is rotten. Any country will have cheats. A cheat is a cheat wherever from. But cheats of the GDR had their shame erased off by drug induced official brain washing. So they kept coming back, because its a democratic world and even crooks are entitled to their rights unlike in the (former USSR GDR and their bootlicking (former) states. The remainig vestiges of bootlickers are also free to use international media platforms to make fools of themselves trying to defend crooked athletes produced by rogue states.
The East European women were outstanding, their men were weak af. Now it's known why.
So the first medal of the first ever World Athletics Championships came in the Women's 4x100m relay then that means that Steve Cram's gold medal performance in the 1500m final came on the last day of those championships. Is this true?
Cram's gold was on the final day (Sunday) but for some reason they held the 4 x 100m relays earlier in the week rather than at the end of the championships as is usually case these days so this race was actually held on the Wednesday.
💕💕💕💕💕
Are you fucking kidding me...Go white girls go!!!
my teacher was in that race
WHO!!!?
Where is USA?
💕 💕 💕 💕 💕 💕 💕
The US is noticebly absent. Thanks Randy Givens for fucking up the baton pass in the semis.
Not the first time the US Girls or Men screwed up a relay.
U must rehearse the baton passes over and over. Just look at the 3. pass here from Auerswald to Göhr. Absolut perfection. As usual, because both girls run for the Jena club. By the way, the 2. pass was not that good, I think that alone cost 0.2 s.
Really??...they look ok to me. Not petite (well german girls are big in bone structure) but feminine still. Quite pretty too. Not muscular like Torry Edwards, Lauren Williams or Gail Devers.
Not sure about pretty, but I found Marita attractive...& intelligent too.
Pretty? Arnold Swazzenegger is a whole lot prettier! Which world are you living in. Black people are genetically muscular and have more fast twich fibre in there muscles. Jesse Owens showed it a long time ago. It wont be long before some GDR drug program apologist would start taking pot shots at Jesse Owens too!
Of course east germany super sport country
....and super drug clinic too!
Kevin Sibley not so good like USA and SSSR
Yes Russia has recently been proven to be fairly prolific in their drug taking. USA I'm sure are guilty in alot of athletes too. But GDR were running a state run drugs programme, well documented, all in black and white.
Kevin Sibley GDR its be small country no more then 19 milion people but saw powerfol
...not sure what thats got to do with the documented drugs programme that East Germany had it's athletes on??
Don't kid yourself they all cheated
So speaks the grand cleric of clairvoyance..!
Why watch then?
Likely true.
drugs
that East Germany's stud run so fast.
East Germany Cheaters Drugged
Yes but they've admitted they were all on drugs
Not sure about "admitted", but a confession is not always required
Modern drug testing and an admission by some of those involved with East German athletics meant the truth came out. They had a full state sponsored doping program.
No they didn't
@@garfieldwillis4254 Then you obviously haven't read the news articles - Google them
