Yes, she was from the GDR and she absolutely doped, but that still does not take away how impressive this run is. Her training regimen was brutal, the OT just allowed her push through her punishing work-outs. Even if Allyson Felix were go to the darkside, I don't think she could approach this time. Bryzgina surely doped, ran the race of life and still got beat by five meters. This record will stand forever. By the way, where on earth did you find this?
You think so huh? You're going to need more than drugs to beat that time. Most of her competitors were on a strict doping regimen also and they were still getting smoked by 10 to 15 meters. If you can get down to under 51 seconds by the time you're 18, maybe you have a shot.
I think the record could be broken. But not for some time. We seem to see too many finals won with 49-something seconds on the clock. And people are usually happy with that. Not since Perec and Freeman at Atlanta have women come anywhere close to within a second of Koch's time. And I know Freeman's time was 48.63, compared to Koch's 47.60. But it was a good run.
I'll be probably be dead by the time that happens. I don't think people fully comprehend how fast that time is. She went the first 200 in 22.4. You know how absurd that is. Two crowd obviously knew there were seeing something unusual judging from the gasps. I got an autograph from an Olympian that ran against Koch and she told me flat out, no female sprinter will be able to top that time even if they doped. You can't just use PED's and you'll automatically run faster. You have to take full advantage of what the drugs can do for you and no athlete did that better than Koch. People don't realize that these athletes are already at an elite level. Koch would probably have won without the drugs. All those European Championships she won, she was running against other juiced up runners and the gap between her and everyone else was freakish.
I think it is reasonable that some lady will defy the typical 48 second winning runs and do a special 46-point-something time. Probably something in the low 47 second time. A 22 second first 200, and then a 24-something-second next 200. Not out of the ordinary for some female athlete to do.
Any honest athlete will tell you that they were all juiced up back then. Just as any honest athlete will tell you that they are all juiced up even today. If all the field was clean, inc Koch, she would have STILL been pulverising these fields. A once in a lifetime athlete. Probably the GOAT.

As of 2015 - In 30 years, no other female 400m runner has broken 48 seconds. The last time someone ran under 49 seconds was in 2009, by Sanya Richards Ross, who dominated her event for the best part of a decade. That time in 2009 was 48.83, still well over a second slower than Koch’s WR. In 2014, only two women broke the 50 second barrier. Interesting thought.

If all the East German women were all doped up to the heavens why are only three East German athletes in the best 25 times. Shouldn't they be dominating the best times?
That race was a thing of beauty. She gave it her all to get that time and was dying in that last 30m. She stayed quite feminine for a supposed juicer. It was great to see her and Flo-Jos' stride length and power increasing as they both peaked respectively. For someone who is mainly suspected of doping because of her performances, I say she she's as clean or dirty as any other athlete who never tested positive; and therefore it's her talent that makes her the greatest sprinter of all time.
A number of drug apologists speak of the ‘hard work' done by Marita and others, not realising that the ability to manage an extreme physical regime is a 'give way' sign of substance abuse. That’s how they build up strength without having to quit training sessions.
The drugs were what made the training and hard work possible. If everyone was "juiced" then that puts them on an equal playing field... No national flags for that meet. Like, not in medal presentations and not in any other formal proceedings. Completely over the head of every drongo in the world, but I noted that. I don't know what that was all about, whether someone decided to test such a format or whether it was a Soviet Bloc stipulation or someone's idea to reassure the Soviet Bloc of ' neutrality ', but it was a response to the boycotts of Moscow, 1980 and Los Angeles, 1984. But nothing much, if anything, ever came of it. But it did not seem to deter Marita Koch or the East Germans, and the crowd attendances look healthy.
The Eastern Europeans were so disappointed at missing out on Los Angeles 1984 that they overcompensated for this meet, as we subsequently know with a systematic government-backed doping programme.

Amazing what PEDS can do to an athlete. No other women's 400m runner has ever come close to a doped Marita Koch in 1985 with her 47.60 sec. That's a staggering 35 years. The sports authorities should seriously consider wiping out or erasing all world records in athletics before the implementation of more stringent doping tests from year 2000. Even the present winning time for the women's 400 metres at the Rio Olympics set by Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas stands at 49.44s. That's a staggering 1.8 seconds behind Koch's! Shocking.

@@barath4545 I remember both very well. But there is no scientific advantage for any lane in the 100 meters because there is no curve. And when Wayde won the 400 in Rio, it might've actually been an advantage to run in lane 8 because he ran blind and just let loose, but also he didn't have to run the tight curve. Lane 1 and 2 are the worst lanes for the 200 and 400. I think that's what makes this world record even that much more amazing.
Lane assignments were random until around 1990. Now they are seeded according to the semi-final results, and lane one is now often left empty for the 200 and 400. Although many runners don't like the outside lane, there is no actual evidence for it being a disadvantage.

Just to see when we can break them still, as they do in weightlifting.
I don't know any weightlifting fans that care about the 2018+ WRs, they only care if those new WRs are above the old ones in roughly the same weight classes, as do the lifters.
The GDR had the best know-how, the best training conditions, the best sports promotion. Pushing it only on doping is too cheap. These talented athletes like Marita Koch, the largest of them
If all the East German women were all doped up to the heavens why are only three East German athletes in the best 25 times. Shouldn't they be dominating the best times?
After this record she smiles lime jogging in tha park. Ridicolous....she was filled like a wine's bottle
Many criticize Koch for doping, but why doesn't Sebastian Coe, who recorded the same impossible time at the same time, criticize it?
In which case, Marita Koch was an amazing athlete who stood out as an incredible woman. Others, including Kratochvilova were also amazing athletes. Same goes for Flo Jo 3 years after this event when she tore up the record books in 88.
I agree....Just look at the women records from this era. I really think they should think about removing them at this point. I didn't always think that way but they are so far out of reach that it might be unfair to today's women to even dream about breaking them.
I would agree with you if you if you are statement was backed up with facts you said everyone was juiced that's just not true tell me the date kock tested positive.... And you mentioned flojo.. tell me the drug flojo was on by name if you can't do that you should not connect their names with drugs... Only thing you can say is that they ran fast.... I mean just think about what I'm saying...
@@sinsin1697 erm, you may have miss-read my words... I said "if" everyone was juiced, and thus on an equal footing, and therefore, Koch (And Flo Jo) are amazing athletes who were simply brilliant and better than the rest.
@@andisoshal3715 yeah I see what you're saying now.. it's just that me myself I am a national champion and I know what it takes to be in national champion on a master level and a collegiate level.. and just to hear so many people( not you ) but to hear so many people mostly non-americans.. bash flojo as if she did something wrong the only thing she did was run fast man I know what it takes to be a national champion and it's something serious but to be a icon like flojo I could imagine what she brought her body through to have all of that work drug in the dirt without proof ...just hit a nerve every time.. so maybe I did jump the gun and I apologize

She’s the Mozart of women’s sprinting!
The Eastern Europeans were so disappointed at missing out on Los Angeles 1984 that they overcompensated for this meet, as we subsequently know with a systematic government-backed doping programme.

Marita Koch the best ever in der world all time.
Thirty four years later nobody has got anywhere near this time. She was half a man when she set it. It should be expunged (as should any world best set by Kratochvilova). Eid Naser should be the world record holder.
Eid Naser may be doping. Naser was previously coached by Bulgarian Yanko Bratanov, one of whose athletes Kemi Adekoya was banned for four years earlier this year Where there is smoke there is fire. Just saying
Shocking.
Are you so naive that you don't realise it's a level playing field? The best are the best no matter juiced or not. Bolt, Marita, Shelly, MJ, Elaine, Flo Jo.

Really nice of the meet organizer to put the top two runners (by far) in lanes 1 and 2. What a joke!!
Well Kim Collins once won a Worlds from lane 1, and iirc, didn't van Niekerk also break the 400m from the 9th lane?
I mean it happens.
I feel the true 400m world record is that by Marie Jose Perec. 48.25 in Atlanta 1996. Flo Jo's records also need to be deleted as they were blatantly due to drugs. The fact its been 31 years and the closest anyone has got to her 100m of 10.49 is 10.64 and the closest anyone has gotten to her 200m of 21.34 is 21.63 speaks volumes. 47.6 is an insane time if a man had run.
