Great review Roger as usual but this one is superb! I have several Major Craft SPJ rods and love them especially the long fall model since I fish on party boats and need the extra length. I have a Major Craft dealer close to me so I will check it out. I was wondering if this rod would work jigging light jigs on a party boats in the spring when the fluke are on the flats in water no deeper than 12ft. and if not what would you recommend. I just purchased a Temple Reef Pixie on pre-order to see how that works out. They have two spinning models and two casting models, 30-60g and 60-140 10:20 both 6’2 and 3.8oz and 4.0oz. respectively. If you get a chance check them out. Once again thank you for a great video and review.
I think you'll enjoy this rod on the party boat, it's a tad long at 7'9 but just be careful not to high stick when swinging shorts and you'll be okay. Major Craft does produce very high value rods, they're known for giving great bang for the buck and this Ceana attests to that tradition.
Thank you so much for the advice. Do you think the Vanford works for PB fishing? I’ve been using the Stradic 4000 on a St. Croix Avid Inshore 70MF 3/8-3/4 It’s the original with the brown blank
Hey Roger just wanted to thank you for recommending the Ceana. I used it this past week paired with the Ultegra and couldn't believe how it handled. The sensitivity was amazing as you could feel every little bump and tick with the 1/4 oz lead head and 6'' jerk shad. The hooksets were crisp when I crossed their eyes and the action was amazing especially when they made a run for it. It absorbed the quick bursts as they tried to shake the hook. Another thing that was amazing was how far I could cast such a small bait. Awesome recommendation. I also ordered your course which is a wealth of knowledge with all the extra tips. I already have your OG blades and just ordered a few packs of the DJB's which I'm going to use this week. Your the man!
Haha thank you!!! I'm glad you're liking the Ceana - definitely a very sweet rod and the Ultegra matches it perfectly. Tight lines out there and if you catch a shoremat on the blades - photos! lol!
I bought the M power Ceana and I love it , looks beautiful and has the perfect tip flex. No matter what I cast under 1 ounce casts far and has a response on the retrieve.
I have the same setup and I love it for fishing off the kayak or small boat. But Roger is spot on about it being a bit short and stiff for shore. I would go with a 7'6" or higher for the shore
@@CookingandFishing I have not been a fan either, but I took a chance on one of the Hi Tide SSD rods and from a pure esthetic point of view, it is just gorgeous. If the Japanese reviews are any indication of the actions and comments how nice it feels in the hand, then I can't wait to get it on the water. I'll keep you updated... Love your videos.
Well, I see it at $127 - but I was told the rod will retail for under $100 when I agreed to test out the rod...so that's unfortunate. Do I still think it's a good value? Yes. Would it be a better value at $95? 100%.
Do jigs and weighted paddle tail swimbaits have generally the same characteristic requirements from the rods? Either on a round jighead or weighted hook?
I've never been a fan of salmon/steelhead blanks for fluking - they're usually too soft/bouncy. If you need length the JDM suzuki style rods fit the bill, but generally the freshwater bass rods are 100% applicable.
@@CookingandFishing do you think the 7’9 model has enough back bone for fish up to 35”? The only other option I see is the 23 dialuna in the 8ft medium model. I know it’s a massive price difference but I’m already spending $310 on a twin power😂
@@erickescobedo4820 I think it's hard to say, I've landed 30lb+ cownose rays on the light freshwater setups but if I were actually targeting fish that size I wouldn't be using 2500 reels and 12lb leaders. I think open beach, no hard structure...you can land the odd beast but sooner or later you'll come to grief if your gear is undergunned. I'm a fan of the Labrax AGS and Dialuna both.
Are you talking about the Tatula Elite AGS model? I have it linked in most of the video description - that along with the cork Tatula 76MLM, and the Steez AGS 76MLM - all perfect rods for this application.
@@CookingandFishing At a spot like Island Beach State Park where there are more waves, would you throw a single jig that weighs more then an ounce ? If so would the next model up work better ?

Bon Voyage! May it be the last time you set foot in Bayonne lol!

Awesome!!
Good pair with the vanford 2500? Or something else you would recommend more? Loved the course! Highly recommend.
Thank you!!! Any 2500/3000 sized Shimano would work, Vanford would be perfect - Ultegra, Stradic - all good
Another great vid, not so much a budget rod but the Shimano hard rocker XR s76ML rod might be worth considering👍
Thanks! I can't remember the exact model but I tried a couple of Shimano "rock" rods and they didn't load deeply enough for me at all
Thanks for sharing.

wow the water is so clean on this bay or port.😂
I just bought a Vanford 2500 and paired it with a Zodias MH 6'9" spinning rod. Thoughts about that combo?
I think it would make a great kayak combo, the rod's a little short and stiff for my tastes jigging from shore, but I'm sure it'll work just fine!
I have the same setup and I love it for fishing off the kayak or small boat. But Roger is spot on about it being a bit short and stiff for shore. I would go with a 7'6" or higher for the shore
which budget rod would you recommend for crankbait/jerkbait fishing?
Probably the Tatula XT 73M - for jerkbaits and *small* crankbaits. Larger crankbaits I don't use spinning setups.
@@CookingandFishing thanks
I've been trying to order this rod for several days . The site says can't ship to my address. Emailed them with no reply
I'll pass it along
Still can't. I emailed them several times with no reply
Great video as always! What would you recommend in that next tier $200 range?
I have a few combos listed in the description - but it's between the Zodias 76M and the Tatula and Tatula Elite 76MLM
@@CookingandFishing thanks a lot. I appreciate the response and all the great content
I use a Ceana for red drum fishing and for a budget rod it does really well. Have you tried the Tailwalk Hi Tide SSD..??

Do jigs and weighted paddle tail swimbaits have generally the same characteristic requirements from the rods? Either on a round jighead or weighted hook?
It depends on the hook gauge - if similar wire diameter than you can get by with similar rod taper/power.
Personally, for budget rods, I love Riversider Steelhead rods for surf-fishing for fluke, they have new ones with carbon handles as well. super light

Any thoughts on the 8’ ml version?
Haven't used it, so no.
