My favorite way to catch fluke - on the jerkbait, in the surf. Bite has definitely improved after the full moon, thank god :)

*You need the right gear to throw these finesse jerkbaits! I know many of you are using heavy saltwater setups for jerkbaiting - this is not the way. Any of the rod/reel combos listed below will do MUCH better for this style of fishing.

@12:03 you could see the fluke's eyes moving like a chameleon. lol nice catch. btw, what specific color is that lure? is it the aurora black?
Yes aurora black and MS american shad
Hi. I’m new at fishing. Look for some help. What type of action rod can cast further fishing from the beach using 1/2 oz to 1 Oz lure. Thanks
Your expertise is not being in question here. At all. But I just want to add the conditions of alot of “surf” fishing action is as flat as a back bay trip. Get somewhere with some breakers and bigger rollers and make a video with some of these techniques to properly umbrella cover these techniques and situations.
Perfect time with a new video!
🥰
💪💪
You're attention to detail with float rate and presentation is unmatched..... Well done
Thanks EJ! Jerkbaiting is a deep topic, add in wave/wind along the surf and things get complicated quickly lol
ordered one before summer season is gone.😂
Is this NJ or NY? Did you see improvement in both?
Would you recommend using your lazy Alberto knot for fishing with heavier line for striper, blues, etc? Or should I only use it with lighter line
If you're not casting through the guides then use it for any lb test, though once I'm at 20lb+ leaders I'm tying the FG knot.
can you use jerkbaits on a peir
Not usually - only if you can stand right at the waterline. Not really something you can fish effectively standing 10ft above the water.
@@CookingandFishing i’ve been killing it with single jig from local pier but as of late the snapper keep destroying my gulp even with spinning blade attached, what other method would you recommend from pier?
@@chrism4544 Yeah it's tough...you can get the 4" grub (that comes 10 in a pack) and use the spinnerblade on those - they are as close to snapper proof as gulp comes, very tough and rubbery material.
@@chrism4544 Also - lipless crankbaits. The Rippin Rap 04 and 05, Jackall TN70 - both great drop baits for jigging.
6:43 i felt that 🤣
I hate - HATE - losing fish lol
Curious to see how often you have striped bass hit this while targeting fluke
Not many at all - some will turn on it but most of the summer resident stripers are eating mole crabs, and when they're keyed in on that stuff 1 out of 100 will eat anything else. Probably the smartest striped bass around are the sand crab eaters in crystal clear water cruising the wash.
So do you tie direct to the split ring or omit the split ring and tie direct with a loop knot (jerkbait / jerkshad) thanks.
I take off the split ring and use a snap - BKK Fast Snap in size 1
Man I never get them to eat it like that. 95% of the time they have the single tail hook, am I doing something wrong?
It just depends on the fish. Sometimes it could be a color thing, most of the time it makes no difference. The one thing that makes a difference is the size of the fluke!
Not fishing? Not catching? What gives?
Lol not posting - for now
@CookingandFishing Speaking of trying new jerkbaits, could you try the Shimano World Minnow 115sp or Zumverno 95sp? Especially in that murky water, the flashboost and scaleboost technologies could help to attract attention. Great video. I am always eagerly awaiting your new posts. Really hope the fishing gets better soon!
Thank you! I've tried both the world minnow and zumverno (as well as the world diver) - the first 2 don't dive deep enough, and the world diver goes too deep. I too am intrigued with the flash boost disc...looks great, I hope they come with a world diver MD or something that would be perfect.
@@CookingandFishing OH!, you think so? hm... I have been absolutely killing them with the zumverno. Maybe my area is just shallower in general. But anyways, the fish like it so I like it. Also because the ghosts ayu looks A WHOLE LOT like a bunker.
So what are your favorite color patterns for the LC 78DD? I have been using the Japan shad with good success. I have also switched out both hooks for single Owner inline hooks. Less weed as well, but may not go as deep. Thanks for suggesting jerkbaits, as I tried them this year and had good success.
Japan shad is a good color, MS american shad, aurora black - all good foil colors. Maybe add an opaque white based color like Chart Shad or bone white, and maybe a translucent pattern like Ghost Minnow for different light/water conditions.
@@CookingandFishinggreat suggestions! Do you have a reliable source for Lucky craft, especially this particular size? I have been getting them off eBay.
@@docfishingsrq ebay is fine, amazon, TW, anywhere really it's a widely available bait in fact one of the first modern jerkbaits ever made
Awesome video. If you’re looking for a new rod, check out the Century Demon or Weapon Jr rods. I think there is a shop or two in Jersey that carries them.
I've handled them, fished with one briefly...not really what I'm looking for. If you haven't tried the Steez - try the Steez 🤣
@@CookingandFishing That’s cool. I tried the Steez bait casting rods when they first came out in 2007, but preferred GLoomis at the time. Century bait casting rods fit the bill for me to land freshwater and saltwater from Virginia to Florida. Also, those Lucky Craft Pointer 78s and the 100s are killer lures
@@auggyboy284 That's like 4 generations ago lol...btw I'm not a huge fan of the half dozen or so current gen Steez AGS models I've owned - really just the 76MLM spinner. That one is special - a rare "versatile" rod that's actually perfect for multiple applications.
Pulling those hooks and having them fly at you is always a “fun” time lol
I'm not too worried about plugs flying at my face, if you notice my rod angle is almost always over my opposite shoulder or off to the side...but it's gonna be a bad day for someone walking behind me sooner or later lol
Yea having the rod angled away on the hookset does also feel better so I get it. Anyone standing to close might just have to assume the risk 😂
@@downonefindone yup - rod just clearing the side of your head, dodging errant lures is just a bonus to having good hookset mechanics!
that YGK Upgrade Braid is really nice now that i got a chance to use it! I finally got a keeper this year and it was out front last weekend. hoping to go back out a few more times this upcoming month. You ever consider getting fluke on a fly rod, just for the novelty of it? seems decent if they are up in the wash especially, definitely not as effective as the jerkbait however
Awesome!! I've considered it, but knowing myself it'll be an all-in project...maybe after I catch my DD on a jerkbait I'll pick up a fly rod lol
I have done fluke on the fly. I use an intermediate running line with a T-14 or heavy shooting head to get the flies down as the current and waves can really take hold of the fly line. I put a chartreuse and white clouser off of 3’ of 20# fluoro and tie a flashy teaser to the bend of the clouser about 1 foot behind. I have been doing this for 15+ years at the Jersey shore and have usually done well.
