When I heard Empire of the Clouds I actually found myself so immersed in the song, that I could visualize each scenario of the song. Not just by the lyrics, but by the different parts and melodies of the song.
Really? I am not a native speaker, I thought it was about a giant vessel (something like a ship) which would travel to the empire of the clouds and crash before it got there. In an era before the greek-roman timeperiod (probably because I heard: an Achilles yet to come). I don't know how I got this visualisation, but when I read the lyrics and looked up the wikipediapage I found out it was about a giant zeppelincrash in France. Before I read the wikipediapage and after I read the lyrics, I thought it was about a dream of an Empire of the clouds. Again: I am not a native speaker so the lyrics isn't the first thing I listen to (except when it is in Dutch, which is my native language) but I am glad I did look it up.

I have watched 30 years of interviews with Bruce Dickenson with a host of interviewers, good and bad. I have to say that this was the most organic and easy going "chat" with Bruce that I have every seen. This young man has the potential to be some one of skill and ease of person. Bravo. That being said the new Iron Maiden is everything I wanted it to be!!!! Thank you guys and UP THE IRONS.

Maiden have been my favourite band for nearly 30 years, from the "classic" 80s line up, through the 90s, right up to the present day. As far as I'm concerned, the book of souls is a brilliant album, with empire of the clouds the best song on the album.
Absolutely lovely guy. We were playing a gig once and me and the bassist turned up early at the venue so there was only us there and in walked Bruce, his manager and another guy. Spent a good half hour just chatting as normal guys. What a guy, a real gentleman.

I read a review that called this album their best since Seventh son of a Seventh Son. Pretty big statement, and first I didn't fully agree, since I thought most songs were about the same level as Final Frontier, although I did consider that to probably be that good when it was released. But that changed completely with Empire of the Clouds. It's probably the most daring song Iron Maiden has ever made, and truly a masterpiece.
+lasseplatburk i think that The Great Unknow is the only song that fits with Final Frontier, and it is the only one I don´t like. The whole álbum but that song is great, too different from the other albums, maybe too "quite", great songs are really great, those which are not so great are in the same level of any Iron Maiden álbum.
Prog! Awesome! I find it amazing so many first with this album. Seems like a spiritual ride before Bruce deals with his illness which was a blessing in disguise for Nicko to become sober. Amazing strength here for the band! Everything falling into place the way it should perfectly, the ride of life to make things stronger. A very sensitive song which amazingly was all Bruce-what a feat. Great!

Interesting bit of history on this event: Raul Reyes, the leader of the FARC had just been assassinated in Ecuador by Western proxies operating out of Columbia. I was there when the protests broke out and war nearly broke out between Venezuela, Ecuador and Columbia. Long story, but Bruce Dickenson came in to give a voice to those people of the mountains who for centuries had been exploited by colonialism. It was so fucking powerful.
