Afterlife had some good ideas and also some good plot points. Seeing Ivo Shandor's tomb was wild. There's good scare and creep factor, the Mini Marshmallow men was great, but there was probably just not enough comedy. The Ghostbusters are all Spenglers and not Venkmans. There is not enough Bill Murray level comedy to carry this one, and he was always brilliant because he always deadpan and looked like he knew he was in a comedy film. The others can't match him in the jokes department. I guess they were going for a more "Stranger Things" vibe, and I guess that worked for a new generation. A touching tribute to Harold Ramis too. Still fun and watchable but not a patch on the original.
I hadn't thought of the Stranger Things similarities but I think you're right! I did notice the more serious tone. I felt like Paul Rudd was supposed to bring the comedy and I do like him but I didnt think he quite nailed it in this movie and there's a lot less comedy than in the first two films.
