    Hello my friends! In this video I discuss my thoughts on buying the Nikon 20mm 1.8S lens Vs. the Nikkor 14-30 f4S lens. Both are amazing but both have their drawbacks for limited purposes, in this video I cover the differences and which lens you should consider for different types of photography. Hope this helps - Will

      I have a question that I can't seem to find the answer for. When shooting my z6ii in low light the viewfinder will quickly brighten up as I half push shutter or push AF-ON button..I absolutely hate this.. is there any fix you know of?
      Thanks in advance!!

    20 has been part of my wedding and event trio for years and I love it so much. It's also great for landscapes if the job includes nighttime work, I find that I don't often regret not having the 15-30 when i bring the 20 instead. Dance floor - this thing is awesome. Agree that it can be tough in a ceremony, especially under open sky, but if there is architecture or tree canopy above I think it really shines. Also great for the walk down the aisle after the first kiss.

    Hi Will! I have both and had a blast with them on my trip to Iceland. 20mm is a must for astro in my opinion, the stars are just so sharp even at the corners. 14-30 was my first Z lens and it really opened up many opportunities with the filters at this wide angle. But I agree that if you can only have one, go for the 14-30mm. In fact, I'm leaving in an hour to Chiang Mai for some astro photography! Cheers!

    Why are all of Nikon’s lenses so long, regardless of if it is a 20mm or a 50mm?

    I've been a 20 prime fan forever, so naturally this Z lens is an absolute favorite of mine. I did consider the 14-30 4, but I wanted the extra stops of light for astro (which allows me to use faster shutter speeds, resulting in more light before star-trailing kicks in). Plus the edge-to-edge sharpness / clarity of this 20 is bananas.

    Definitely a beast for astro...highly recommended! I will say that my lens has some noise when focusing...both my 20 and 85 1.8S have some noise when focusing. I never realized that they didnt coat this lens w their normal S coatings...it does seem harder to clean and get no streaks when shooting astro. Thanks for your work...love your vids!

    You mentioned shooting at 28mm. What are you using for 28mm?
    Also, would love to see some samples of your 20mm shots.
    Thanks for sharing your views. I’m glad you’ve fired up the channel again. 🤓

    I have the AF-S 20/1.8 (bought it as a 1:1 replacement of the 20/2.8 screw-lens, but it is much more!!!) I think there are not much optical differences to the Z Lens.
    It is really a unique lens: close focus distance: 0.2m (0.66ft) from focal plane and Apperture 1.8 allows for unique and cool images.

    Hi Will, I agree with you: this is a great lens for portrait if you are very close to the person which you want to photograph. In any case, all these Nikon S lenses are amazing!

    I'm a new Z9 owner and my first lens purchase was the 20mm 1.8, of course the FTZII for my F mount lenses. Great to hear you mention it is/ has a unique lens and look to images. Just what I'm looking for! Besides Landscape and Astro the 20mm will soon be utilized in my new Liquid Eye water housing for water/ action surf images.

    I've borrowed it from a friend for a test drive. Great lens and surprisingly sharp. Worked well for interior shots in high contrast. It's on the eventual todo to get for a bit of astro photography and general wide angle. Flourine coating would be nice, but I suspect it would bump the price a bit too far. AFAIK the ramped focus response can be turned off with the latest z9, z6ii and z7ii firmwares,

    Agree with you this 20 is complementary to my 14-30, this 20 will join my bag too. One lens you didn't mentionned is the 85 1.8, for me the perfect couple. But may you use more more practical and fastest in use for your job, like the 70-200 2.8.....

    Hi Will, I have the 20mm f1.8 & love it especially for Astro, a faster lens is better for Astro to keep shutter durations shorter & ISO lower. The B/W I sent you awhile back of Sam was shot with the 20mm f1.8.. I also agree the 20mm will offer a little different perspective on many shots, it also is about as wide as you can go & stitches well for Panos..I have the F lens as the S lens was not available when I bought my Z6, works well with FTZ adapter. Keep up the good work, love your channel, Ken in AZ🌵

    Never thought I would like a 20mm until I used the Lumix S 20-60. After using it I found myself using the 20mm range quite a bit. The 20-60 seems to stay on my camera quite a bit.

    Interesting video Will. I have always heard from photographers that you don't want to photograph people with a lens wider than 35mm but if you use the right technique and composition you can make it work. Thanks as always Will, I'll see you in the next one bro!

    I had this lens for events, though things in the foreground were too distorted and couldn't take portraits with it as they were pin cushioned in the centre beyond correction. I got a 28 1.4 f mount which is perfect

    I wonder, what do you think, about a new Nikkor z 17-28 f2.8? Is this lens would be better choice for wedding photography than prime 20mm , or zoom 14-30?

    • @TheMonochromeMemoirs
      @TheMonochromeMemoirs  2 года назад

      I like the zoom range for sure and the 2.8 would make it attractive for weddings.. I don’t usually run into problems only having the f4 because the primary use for the 14-30 for me is dance floor where I’m using external lighting and want to have a lot in focus.. would like that 2.8 for wide veil outdoor shots though

  • @martinsmyth5580
    @martinsmyth5580 2 года назад +1

    I thought f1.8 would be far more beneficial for an astrophotographer for letting in more light rather than up your iso or having a longer shutter speed; with an f4, please correct me if I am wrong

    • @TheMonochromeMemoirs
      @TheMonochromeMemoirs  2 года назад +2

      Yea it’s better for sure, I’m just saying if you’re a mix of landscape and Astro and looking for one lens I’d go with the 14-30.. if Astro only yeah then the 20 1.8

    Very interesting! I was curious about this (and still am) but for my needs and budget I think I'll have to wait until there's a used bargain one fine day. I have a wide one but its resolution is kinda meh. The clarity and resolution Nikon delivers with their S series is incredible so this definitely goes to my wish list. Thanks for your insights!

  • @anthonyc1883

    Looks like flourine coating is on only one lens in the same price category as the 20, and that's the 2.8 macro. Otherwise, it's the very high-ticket lenses that get fluorine coatings, like the MF 0.95 Not ($8K), the 400 2.8 ($14K) and the 800 ($6.5K). Even the 50 1.2 ($2K) doesn't have it.

    Hey William. Thanks for some more great content. I'm guessing you'll need to do an updated version of this video with the new 17-24 mm 2.8 that Nikon just released for the Z- Mount. That looks to be a heck of a lens at a great price point. I currently have the 28-75 mm 2.8 version and that's a very versatile for me as a hybrid shooter.

    Focus by wire is shit. I've been using RED's remote system on the Zeiss supreme primes recently and it's awesome... But still a bit shit... Even on a £100k camera rig. Give me the Nikkor G lenses on a lightweight Z body any day...(Well minus the CA on the 58mm which is awful for video.)
