For people to say "I love how you shot that..." Is a HUGE compliment. Nothing to do with the camera, the lens, the editing, etc etc. Just for people to acknowledge your perspective on images is a confidence booster. When people ask why you're laying on the ground like that or why you underneath something, why are standing all the way over there...you can explain it and they go...."Huh, didn't see it that way".

I'm about to take a leap into photography. I love the art and I've been following photographers for like 5 years. I just ordered a 6D and a 50 with all my savings. I am very scared, but there's something in me that tells me this is the path for me. And it's far stronger than my fear. Thank you for this video. I needed it.
Your best video yet! I remember taking a photography class years ago and the instructor declared, 'shoot in black and white for a year to develop an eye for lighting before you load any color 'film' in your camera!' I remember thinking he was nuts... but he was right. Another instructor told me exactly what you have so eloquently said here, to develop a good eye requires patience, discipline, and a very open mind. You need to analyze shots from every angle to develop the necessary muscle memory that leads you to the optimal shot in your allotted time!' Of course when you hear these things you are like, yeah sure. That is until you see that it really works. You can pixel peep until the cows come home but there is no substitute for the intuition that goes into taking the right shot at the right time. Thank you so much for this video. With all the other guys talking about 'insert technical jargon here' it is a welcome change to hear someone talk about the stuff that matters... the how do I use this thing to get what I want stuff.
I like your idea on photography. It is easy to doubt yourself, and compare yourself to others, but like you said if it is true and organic it will be beautiful; especially with practice.

There are so many elements that make someone a great photographer before they even press the shutter. An eye for composition, noticing what's happening in the background as much as the foreground and using that too, your personality and how you get the best out of people - oh and then maybe taking photographs...
After 42 years of being a part time and once a pro for a couple of years, I have not heard anyone say these things. I have explained this to many people to only fall on deaf ears. Once you have developed your photographers eye, you see the world in a different way. So I watched your entire clip. Training yourself to see in this way kind of gives you an entirely new way to appreciate everything around you and suddenly realising how blind we were before.
Will, you have the gift to engage our photo-centric-mindset by bringing it back to the basic idea of observation and reminding us to always pay deliberate attention when we have a camera in our hands. You mentioned that today's cameras can't find a setting to provide us with a vision or unique world view, but it can be seen through the viewfinder of any camera if we know how to look...by seeking out our images with a kind of Gestalt human perception. Thanks for all the work on these videos.
Great video, takes a long time to "see the light" and understand how to use it. When I need some ideas on seeing light I visit an area that I frequent and just take it in. Amazing how you can pick up and take in a scene that you have visited many times and always missed it. Photography is a journey which takes time to fully undertand, it's not about the kind of camera you carry! Thanks

You’re right about camera companies trying to sell you something to make your images look better. A quote from another photographer “ “This camera is a cold dark beast. It sees nothing.” I watch others .. oh you need a brand. You need this lux. You need this pack. Or you only need this light. ( later, you check the price. It’s 600 dollars). I don’t need that. In need to practice. Get used to the equipment I have, and practice. I could go out with a group of photographers to the same location on the same day. I can shoot things as you say with a different perspective and a different spot. We can compare and every image will be different because we see that same object in a different way. Our interpretation with the exposure triangle, composition, and lighting will be different. I shoot minor hockey and a lot of other subjects. But when I get to an arena the lighting is different. The glass is different tints and thicknesses in the same location. The jerseys are different That really affects things and I have to adapt. I also have to choose which lens to use so the images aren’t the same. Regardless of what I photograph, the subject has a story. It may even tell me when I look at it. If it’s location is part of it, it’s included. If the background or foreground isn’t important, I’ll isolate the subject with aperture and / or fill in flash. But if i need to tell the story and bing that subject to the attention of the viewer, then it’s my interpretation and my story about that subject which makes things so unique.

So many of these ideas of observation, analysis, light, seeing, being a hippie...lol...well, feeling the spirit of a place or thing....wow! I think this is the most difficult thing for people to understand about photography in these modern times. As you have said before Will, because of modern digital technology and the internet we are constantly bombarded with pictures, words, sounds, and content that it's very difficult for some people, especially younger people who grew up with the internet as a major part of their lives to develop their own unique style or perspective. Videos like this are a great way to help them see things from their own viewpoint and develop their own style. hey again will carrying on from the comments on your last video I generally learn by doing and find other channels baffle me with tech talk but to have it stripped back to this style honestly does make me stop and think , I find your manerism just so laid back simple and precise no real product plugging just kit you use and find helps you for me a grass roots wanna help where is can kindda approach you found your flavour stick with it works for me any way stay safe Neil uk
Shooting from multiple angles is so important. Back in film days when I had a growing family and not a lot of money, a 12 or 24 shot roll required close observation of angles. More recently as a retired guy, a lot of that sticks in my brain even though digital images are infinite in numbers. I hang out in a Meetup Group with many pros and amateurs, all younger than me. And I get lost often. Ok, I am not the one who gets lost. I take a half dozen or more images from different angles and heights. Then I look around and those who snapped their shot have moved on and later some say I should have an implant of some kind so I can be found when lost.
That's the kind of topic i love you to cover. It's a like a back to basics moment of thinking. Always a good idea. I agree with everything you said, but also, it makes me think to this empathy question that has always bothered me. Can someone non empathetic can learn how to be ? Like, okay you feel no empathy at all but you maybe can learn how to show some (fake one) 😃😃 But yes, i guess it's way easier to change the way you look at things compared to the way you feel about things! 👍🏻

Dear Hippie, (just kidding, this was a fantastic video). One thing I do when I’m practicing is tape something to block off the rear lcd screen. I’m the worst “chimper” sometimes and this has been a great exercise for me to remain in the moment and analyze later.
