I watch almost all of your videos I'm currently enrolled in Full Sail, great school but watching your videos after the long boring lectures are what really helps me get those 100's on my test and final projects. Thank you for making something entertaining and easy to digest it really helps. I've never been an A student before and it's really all thanks to you.
The only advice I can give you is stop wasting your time at full sail and go get on a real film/tv set asap because that's where you're going to learn most of your knowledge anyway. Either that or work at a camera rental house. The money that your using to pay for your school you can be buying gear instead and using said gear to advertise yourself in order to get booked on jobs. Just my two cents, I went to film school too and didn't come to this realization until after I graduated. Best of luck 👍
I was completly green when I walked on set and got to 1st AC for an indie film. I came from a 3D animation background with a personal interest in filmmaking. Everything I had learned about cinematography was from YT channels like Film Roit, Indy Mogul, StudioBinder, DSLR Guides, Rob Ellis and a few film classes in college. My DP was an experienced and extremely patient guy who taught me everything I needed to know about 1st and 2nd AC, Gripping, DIT, and how to conduct yourself on set. This video really does hit home because it's so true. Thank you Film Riot!
Wow I am the same boat right now, I studied computer animation years ago but really want to be an AC on set, Im going to keep watching YT videos to learn, but also, how do you apply to become an AC? And do they need you to be experienced to hire you? Or do you have to start off as a PA on all sets?
@@GABYFILMSStaffmeup is a great sight for getting gigs. You'd probably want to aim for Camera PA, or 2nd AC first. Sometimes you just gotta plug your nose and jump tho. That's exactly where I'm at, as I just got put on as 1st AC. Never technically done it before, and I got about 4 weeks to study and figure it out. Reminds me of a quote Will Smith said once. "Greatness exists on the other side of fear".
Bro, that's exactly where I'm at now. 4 weeks till shoot on a 1.2 million dollar short with an Alexa Mini, and I technically have never done it before, especially on this level. Any tips for me?
Enjoy seeing ACs get some love on your channel. Andrew hammered home the importance of focus pulling and it's imperfections that require improvisation and precision of the AC to nail that focus every time. For aspiring ACs-- don't be misguided by tech with simple A and B functions that pulls for you **cough cough** it has it's time and place but you need to commit to the craft and practice to be the best, no exception.
Bradford is an amazing AC and I’m privileged to have worked and learned from him in film school. Thanks for teaching me! I take your advice with me to every set.
Having a good 1st AC is so crucial especially as sets get bigger and more needs to be managed because they will help the DP out in so many ways. I have two first AC's that I work with that are great and understand how I shoot and work so that in case one isn't available I can use the other and on bigger projects that I get hired for I always ensure that I can bring one of them on because its what has helped me get through so many scenarios
Thanks for featuring a variety of 1st ACs in this video. Incredibly valuable information from top-notch professionals. It takes a lot of patience, dedication, and skill to do what they do.
One time I was a 1st AC on a short film (actually you guys highlighted it a while ago. Short horror film called The Recipients) I had to pull on a long one take shot, on an old Russian anamorphic lens, at T1.5. Talent was told to improvise. All I had was a first position marker. HARDEST. PULL. OF. MY. LIFE.
I'm annoyed by how much I love this video. So much insight and then product placement for devices that make my jaw drop. "Team Film Riot" tattoo coming right up!
Ugh, that follow focus system on the came-TV ABCD mark buttons. That’s some serious stank of electric sex. I could use the hell out of that right about now
What an incredible video from real on set professionals. I've always loved crew because these guys are absolute studs. They rarely make mistakes, keep it professional and get through the day usually without ever complaining. 12 - 18 hour days on a regular.
I'm used to being my own first AC/DP/Director lol. But It is so valuable when I can direct and trust my DP to nail the shot. It was even more challenging when I'm acting and directing.
Some people make RUclips videos, you guys influence an entire generation of filmmakers. A long time subscriber just saying thanks for incredible content that you have given us for years
Ryan, AWESOME, mate! This was so cool whether one wants to understand filmmaking (me) or be one (which I might have tried 50 years ago had I had your or your presenters' abilities)! Kee 'em coming like this, please!
The follow focus seemed decent, on the other hand I really like the design of the video transmitter be able to be attached to v-mount, but correct me if I'm wrong it wouldn't be suitable for pulling focus correct? I looked at some reviews and it looks like the latency is way too delayed to reliably pull focus on faster moving scenes.
Just recently started working with an AC. It's absolutely crazy how much not worrying about nailing focus or even fumbling around with lenses and filters frees up headspace. I felt like I could "see" the next shot more clearly. So if you can: get an AC - even if they're not super experienced yet
Amazing! Loved this video! I know you guys made a video for 2nd AC years ago. But I would love it if you made another one of those in this same style as this one.
Had my first gig as a DIT last week. I carefully watched and learned from the first AC and I've gotta say, all this is spot on to what he told me. I don't see myself becoming a first AC because I'm bad enough with measurements (been practicing with pulling focus and how to efficiently set up cameras). But their skills are ones I want to master soni can become a better Director or DP

We ever gonna get an update on there comes a knocking. You said the short film was really just a trailer pitch for the feature. Did it fall through. Is it in limbo. Is it in production. I think we need to know
There was a lot of good information here, but there was also so much jargon used in this lesson that I don’t truthfully feel it could be labeled as “101.” Perhaps “301” or "401” would be better. It would have been oh so helpful if a few pop-ups came on screen to help define what your guests were referring to in their comments instead of just pictures of people we don’t know. I don’t think it should be assumed that everyone is familiar with the filmmakers’ in-house terminology in a “101” tutorial.
Love this video. My biggest question is.. How do you get yourself into a position where you can find work as a 1st AC if you don't have any connections?
@@Raph333 worked as a PA for many years and never got a chance to move up. Ended up taking a corporate camera job that paid much more. The film industry in a small town can be a tough place to move up
I had purchased the Came TV focus but for me it didn't take long before it lost connection even with line of sight. Did yours have this problem at all? I liked the price point but 20 feet away and connection wasn't so good. I finally just pulled for the Nucleus M which goes through walls! Cause my AC isn't always next to me or have their own monitor. And I assume that transmitter is just for video like Hollyland and Teradeck correct it doesn't help improve the range of the follow focus.

I'm curious if there are any struggles pulling focus when you are lefthanded. The WCU you showed at the end of the video should be okay because of the wheel being in the center, but as far as I can tell many WCUs have the wheel on the right..
Hello guys, I really need a wireless transmitter that is not as expensive as the Teradek bolt but can also get the job done with little to delay time. What do you recommend? Thanks
How’s the latency on this? I have hollyland Mars 400s which has slight latency really have to pick the best channel to get lowest latency & then there is Teradek which is industry standard with very low latency. Was wondering how well this video transmission will work for focus pulling for faster actions. If filming an action scene like a fight and slight latency can throw focus pulled off
why there is not two different operator in camera team, one touch the camera and second who only focus focus puller work. Because if you 1 camera assist do both work it takes time to training in focus puller work.
