  • Good morning you awesome war torn and vicious camera geeks! Today's video is an EPIC battle between two cameras considered among the best #blackandwhite cameras of all time. These two LEICA cameras are renowned for their black and white abilities.
    The cameras are the Leica M8 (2006) and the original Leica M Monochrom (2012) aka the M9M or the M Monochrom CCD.
    Note: If you do not like older cameras or find them too risky, the best NEW Leica Monochrom might be this one: amzn.to/3CekBJD
    As of today 6/8/23 there is only ONE left in stock! Drop me a comment if you bought it!
    For the many years that I've used the M8, I've always been satisfied with its b&w imaging capabilities. It is such a great b&w camera that people started calling it "The Poor Man's Monochrom." However, deep in my gut I've often wondered if the M Monochrom was really better and if so in what way.
    So now that I have both cameras, I decided to find out for myself what the real differences were. I've also wondered if I really needed a monochrome only camera since I have been doing b&w conversions from many different cameras and have always liked the results. In this video, I have found the answers and if you're a b&w fanatic as I am, you too will find the answers in this video because not only do I pit the M8 against the M Monochrom but we'll also see how these black and white Camera Legends do against a variety of other cameras.
    This video makes a simple request: You must truly LOOK at the images and you must ASSESS for yourself and draw YOUR own conclusions. Leave a comment as to whether you agree or disagree with my assessment. I don't mind a healthy civilized debate!
    For the cheap 30mm f/10 FOCUS FREE bargain lens used in most of this video please support this channel by buying from our link here: amzn.to/446n0lB
    While not an optical marvel it's a surprisingly fun to use lens that will yield interesting results that will give character to your images. It's available in multiple mounts and is well worth your $29 bucks!

    Thanks Sam it is always a pleasure to watch one of your RUclips videos . I really appreciate all your hard work putting them together . I love the M-4P image shot on Tri-x at 8:30 also the M Monochrome as you said kills it when shooting the darker images-- they really were outstanding. But all in all, any camera you use can produce an outstanding image when used to its potential as a creative tool under the right conditions. Your photos reflect your vision, that's what stands out to me. Mahalos my Braddah.

    Looks like I'm the new #2. Thanks Mr Legend for covering this! It looks like the MONOKROM really does better in the shadows where other cameras would struggle. But the M8 does better in the highlights. You are the only guy who has compared these two cameras' IQ side-by-side.
    Good to see you on RUclips again man!

    Hi Sam. Was chatting on your insta about this. I have both also.
    One point I think worth mentioning is that in the DNG files, you have way more latitude to edit in the Mono and you NEED to do that. The files are very flat and you need to “develop” them. You can get away easily with a one click conversion on the m8.
    I love the results from both. I was surprised how much highlight detail can be recovered from the mono also as I’ve seen so many reports that this is terrible. Maybe it is technically but for how I shoot it’s been amazing.
    If you’re a Monochrome shooter I’d recommend the Mono as the M8 has doubled in price on the second hand market and is about 70% the price of the mono now. So if you like editing and intend to shoot mono only, the extra few hundred bucks is worth it, otherwise the M8 will be a great all rounder

      Hi Paul! Excellent write up here with some really sound advice for anyone seeking these two classics.
      Absolutely right about the Monochrom flat files and using the DNG files to extract the best out of the camera.
      In this video I was thinking of the fairest way I could put these cameras head to head. I came to the conclusion that I had to use the in camera b&w setting on the M8 and use both cameras at the highest jpeg settings because even though both would benefit from raw file processing, that would mean the end result would be from the user. I wanted the viewers to see what actually comes out of both cameras without processing.
      But absolutely true the DNG files especially on the Monochrom does wonders. Nice to see you here and read your comments my friend thanks! 😍🙏👍

I have a photo buddy, he's 80 too, he's still sharp as a tack and I learn something new from him every time we shoot. He sees me as "the kid" and I'm a lot older than most "kids" on RUclips 😂 Enjoy the M8! Your old school b&w experiences should help you master it fast. And thank you for subscribing I really appreciate it! 😍🙏👍

      @@RobMatthews21 Thanks! Sorry for the late reply. It was sold on Amazon, the link is in the description. I'm not sure if they still sell it though but it was a good deal at $30. The optics aren't great but definitely more usable than a straight pinhole lens.

    Hi Sam, I subscribed on the merits of this video. It is a very timely and insightful video as I am debating whether to jump onto a purely monochrome camera for my black-and-white work. For interest sake, my thoughts as I went through the sets of images were: Set 1 - B had more contrast than A, set 2 Initial thoughts were hard to tell, slightly more contrast in B, set 3, A was a flatter image and B the highlights were way brighter than the mid-tones, set 4, A was a pleasing shot, B was contrasty and my notes say, I suspect that B might be the M monochrome, and Set 5 A has a smooth gradation through the mid-tones and B The only word I wrote was more.

    The standard M9 also produces darker, richer blacks one has to lift in post. It has to do with the overall standard factory DNG tuning of the M9 series.
    I love both and use them all the time, a silver chrome M8 and a silver chrome M9-P. Cheers!

      Great information thanks! I actually picked up the M9 a couple years ago but have used it almost exclusively for its beautiful Kodachrome like colors. Good to know about its b&w capabilities! Appreciate the information thanks much!

      @Funktrainer Год назад

      @@cameralegend1033 I am mainly a colour photographer and love the M8 and M9 for their excellent film like rendering and noise structure. The M9's shadows are more on the heavy side and need to be pulled in post compared to the quicker to handle DNGs of the M8 but overall the output of those Kodak CCDs is pretty similar.

    • @cameralegend1033
      @cameralegend1033  Год назад

      @@Funktrainer I do feel that the M8 & M9 have a similar color output. I’ve heard some people say the M9 sensor is basically a full frame version of the M8 sensor. I don’t know if it’s true but it’s not a bad thing in my book, in fact that would be a great thing! I’m working more with the M9 so I appreciate all the great information thanks!

    The M Monochrom CCD appears to flow out highlights more readily than the M8, based on the images you provided. But this could be caused by multiple factors. Leica digital Ms are known to blow out highlights across the board . . . including the current M11. Otherwise, your comparisons between the M8 and MM appear very compatible overall. But I would opt for the MM if only for the full size sensor.
    One question: did the MM CCD (based on the M9) share the sensor corrosion problem of its sibling, the M9 ?

    • @cameralegend1033
      @cameralegend1033  7 месяцев назад

      Hi Bernard you've made very good observations! Yes it seems the M Monochrom blows highlights much easier. Underexposing helps with this camera. I too value its full frame sensor. And yes it is also prone to the sensor corrosion that plagued the M9. A shame really as these cameras were among the most beloved of the Leica digital cameras. Thanks for your comments and I appreciate you watching!

    Leica and poop man in the same sentence doesn't make much sense, but I get what they wanted to say with it. Btw, the bayer filter isn't being removed, it just isn't there in the first place

      I'll have to look over the video i don't remember any poop in there except for the cheap lenses 😂 You're right about the Bayer filter! I just wanted to hit home the point that the Monochrom has the same sensor as the M9 but without the filter.

    Nice but, if I were you I would take the LEICA M9 instead of M8. The M Monochrome and M9 share the same CCD Full Frame size Sensor and that comparison should be more adequate for that reason.

    • @cameralegend1033
      @cameralegend1033  6 месяцев назад

      Sorry I haven't been getting RUclips notifications must've changed my settings somewhere. Point well taken! The main reason for this comparison is because for many years people have called the M8 "The Poor Man's Monochrom" and I just wanted to see if that was a valid statement. Thanks for your comments.
