I'm one of the old timers you referenced. Have had them all starting with M6 and M7 film, then M8, M9, M9M, M246, M246M, M10 and M10M...hard to believe actually! The weight and feel of the M9's was spectacular and special..I shoot street and it was nice as it got darker in my day, I'd know when to stop shooting and go home! How does the M11 Black feel in terms of weight? I know it's lighter and am hoping it is reminiscent of the M9, which I do regret letting go. I shoot black and white 90% of the time and 28mm 95% of the time and just traded the M10 in for a Q3 that is coming next week..Just discovered your channel and enjoy your enthusiasm and will check out more of your content. my two favorite digital Leica cameras. Got the Monochrom after owning an M8, then sold the M8 and got the M9. Wonderful cameras. I syill own an M3 and M4 but do not shoot film as much as I once did. (been shooting film since 1976). My favorite M9 Monochrom lenses are the 35mm f3.5 Elmar and the 50mm f1.5 Summarit. Sharp centers, dreamy borders. They do well with the Light Lens Lab 8-element and Elcan as well which make a very compact package.
Thanks for sharing. I been using APO 50 on M9M because I like the texture in BnW. The package is bigger though. We will have a video up next comparing Canon dream noc Vs Leica noc on M9M also. Staying with the CCD sensor, I use M9 for color and M8.2 for b&w. As for vintage lens, I like the 35 mm Summaron f/2.8 which is more practical than the 8 Element in my opinion.
Yes, shooting for the highlights is good advice. I had the M9M when it was originally released. I really liked that camera. When the M246M came out I replaced my M9M... and though it was a more stable system, it was thicker, heavier, and I wasn't seeing the magic in the files. In fact to this day my favourite prints from in B&W are from the M9M. But today my Monochrom is the M10M - the dynamic range captures tones so nicely, and all the practical advantages of the M10M, the ISO range, the stability of the processor, the smooth M10P-type quiet shutter.... I can't go back to the M9M. For that I have the MP. But I do get why you guys would like the M9M. It does have its own look - closer to an unlimited supply of Tri-X than the M10M, which, to extend the analogy, is like an infinite supply of T-Max100. Anyway, nice to see you guys' enthusiasm. Thanks for the video. - Exactly at 10:03, Leica ran out of spare parts and Kodak stopped sensor production of course a looooooong time ago. I'm M10 and SL2-S shooter and tempted to get a Monochrom. So, currently I check whole internet for any information I can find. That's how I found your channel. Interesting, it is a very common thing amongst all Monochroms to produce quite flat files. For a good reason of course, it gives you more space for editing in post. - A hint from an old film photographer, screw a red filter to the lens for landscape and for portrait a yellow filter (min effect) if you want more pale and clear skin sooc and a green filter if you want more darker skin tones and dramatic backgrounds sooc. Orange (medium effect) and red (max effect) filter are perfect for cityscapes, you may easily underexpose at least one stop for dark contrasty skies and bright clouds during harsh bright daylight and buildings popping out bright. Buildings have normally yellow tones in the and they will jump out bright, does not work with blue walls of course. ;) Works of course also for black and white film. Greetings to the M7 on the table 🙋♂
I have the Leica M9 and you can actually use bigger carss than 32GB, in fact i use a modern 64GB SanDisk, you just have to format the SD cards to Ex-Fat and the M9 will read the cards absolutely fine - obviously it will only read to the highest speed of the camrea and not the card, but it means you can shoot more to bigger cards
I bought an M9 when it first came out. It was my first ‘serious’ digital camera, and I could use all my M-series lenses with nice results. Then the monochrom was introduced and I knew it was my ultimate digital camera but I just couldn’t come up with the money for a new one. Fast forward a few years with used prices and I found one in close to new condition that I worked a trade with a lens I had. Had Leica replace the sensor and overhaul with a 1-year warranty for free. Yes, like a continuous roll of B&W film. Vintage lenses show all their character and sharpness. 18mp is plenty enough, and actually punches much higher with that non-color sensor. It really is special and unique with the CCD sensor. Not the fastest camera for sure, it processes quite slow. But then, I work slowly and thoughtfully. I have come to love the sound of the shutter and advance, there definiently is nothing like it ;-!) I did get a Leica SL that is much different in use and more modern digital and love it. Gave the monochrom to one of my sons (I still barrow it now and then) and got a 1937 Ziess Sonnar 5cm f1.5 with early lens coating for him to use with it. Amazing combination. Gave him a 35mm 3.5 Summaron recently because he wanted to try something wider and that also pairs nicely, and with the higher ISO the slower lens is fine. The Leica monochrom with vintage lenses are a perfect combination.
Haha the new M6 had issues like film scratching. It seems like Leica is no longer leica from the past. It will be great if they can remake a sensor that has the M9 colours and sound. Folks will buy it.
I‘d love to own one. But considering the price, I would expect it to be a longterm investment. My current Leica is an M5, built around 50 years ago. The M9 and M9M are 10 years old by now and there are no spare sensors available anymore. Which is a real issue since there is the huge corrosion problem and still there are many cameras with corroding sensors out there, that now have a clear deadline. in 5 years they will be gone. Great or not, while my M5 can be repaired today after 50 years without much problems, the M9 is a living dead. Digital rot will probably kill every digital M, no matter which you buy, 10 years later there will be no spares for vital electronics. If 45 years from now people will not be able to say: I got this wonderful, 50 year old Leica M10 and it is still just as wonderful as it was….. then I think Leica has lost a lot of what made it special.

Leica remakes M6. I hope they will remake M9 in one day with new LCD and new battery. The M9 CCD sensor is a phenomenal.
