    Hey guys, today I am talking about the Leica Monochrom, all three versions. With image samples from all three. Who is this for? why is this made? Why not just convert color photos to B&W?
    I share many images with these cameras and reveal which one I feel is best and how Leica can improve these bodies GREATLY in the future.
    These cameras are truly Monochrom sensor cameras without a low pass filter. Truly unique as no one else in 35mm full frame does this.

    Thank you for your videos. Very very thorough and helpful. I've been bingeing your reviews for over an hour now on the hunt for which Leica to invest in, if any. I worked as a photojournalist for seven years, before moving into food photography. Another seven years later, I've transitioned to marketing, but the call of photojournalism has never left my heart. And this monochrom...whew! These images are beyond.

    My 246 is fan-freaking-tastic. That said, the M10M is fantastic-er. From what I’ve seen though, I very likely would get the Q2M, keep my 246 and rationalize that I basically bought the 28mm Summilux that has a 47mp weather sealed camera attached that can also do amazing macro and time lapse work. I slapped a 35mm f1.4 Summilux onto my 246 when I first got it around 1.5 years ago and it has never come off. The “a bit wider” aspect of the 28 would be welcome.

    I'm surprised after so many years using M cameras you never tried adjusting the rangefinder alignment on your own! Its actually very simple to adjust the horizontal alignment (infinity alignment) with a hex key for digital Ms or flat head screwdriver for film Ms.

    Agree 100%. When you side by the latest M10 Mono with the color version you see the rich subtleties of the grays just don’t carry over. I’d be hard pressed to give up that first version tho-IQ is most film like. (I feel the same about the color on the M-8)
    BTW: a couple alternatives: 1) Daniel Morrison’s B&W conversion of Sony A7ii is fantastic! 2) Check out the Flickr groups for Sigma Merrill DP3. There’s a guy in there doing B&W macro monochrome’s that are stunning. The Foveon sensor can match the Leica Monochrome-(maybe better) but you have to shoot in full light on a tripod and wait for each image to process. BUT you’re spending $400 instead of $15000.

    I was just thinking the same as you about the M monochrom EVF. But I own a CL and a SL2 and wish either was the basis for
    an interchangeable lens body with a great EVF to nail focus with all focal lengths. I already have my lenses both M and L mount
    to use. Yes I can set my JPEG for B&W and also have the Raw file for color, but I know a purpose built sensor gives more dynamic
    range, better than one stop less noise at high ISO because no Bayer filter.

    What are your thoughts on the CCD sensors corroding on the M9? the reason im asking is I bought a mint silver M9M from my local shop and returned it after 24 hours because I found 3 specs of corrosion. Im on the fence about getting it back because the files are BEAUTIFUL. Do you think its still worth it knowing that I may have to send it for sensor replacement?

    To get anything close to a film look a CCD is required. CMOS can not replicate that film look. Having said that, a lot could be done in post processing to simulate film. Perhaps a better option is to just save yourself the best part of $15000 and shoot film.

    • @ziggy149

      But then you’re shooting film.

    • @lensman5762
      @lensman5762 3 года назад

      @@ziggy149 And what is exactly wrong with that sir? Lack of immediate feedback, lack of limitless ability to alter raw files, forcing the photographer to slow down and think about what he or she is shooting, the necessity to develop visualization techniques, understanding how an emulsion responds to light, filters etc etc etc. I can see why film is not very popular .

    • @ziggy149
      @ziggy149 3 года назад

      @@lensman5762 Film has been unpopular so long that it actually developed a cult following slowly to where now it’s sort of popular again. Immediate feedback of digital has allowed MANY photographers to increase their skills exponentially faster than film ever did. Your preferred ways of yore is fine, but definitely antiquated - not that it’s bad, but I wouldn’t be so surprised that people aren’t all about it or see the value in it. Unless it’s medium or large format, it’s mostly just nostalgia.

    • @lensman5762
      @lensman5762 3 года назад

      @@ziggy149 I really don't think you understood what I was saying. Give a boy a calculator and he will forever do a good job of adding numbers. Teach a boy how to add, multiply , divide or subtract and he will do a good job of adding numbers but a lot slower. Take the calculator away from the boy and he is lost in the big world of numbers. I stick to my film cameras and my Leica M, Nikon , Canon and Olympus digitals but please don't ever try and tell an old timer that his ways are antiquated because you shoot digital. It is not about film, it is about the knowledge of photography and skill of seeing without the use of an LCD or shooting two dozen digital frames just in case one of them has any merits.

    • @ziggy149
      @ziggy149 3 года назад

      @@lensman5762 Nope. I understood you completely. I’m sorry man, but what you are talking about is a conscious choice to deny yourself of better and more efficient tools. Your view on this is in the minority - and that works for you. It’s what you know and love, but thinking that one needs all the building blocks of photography (such as the ones you are suggesting like film emulsion, etc - not to include the exposure triangle, of course) to produce amazing images on a modern camera .. well, it’s a matter of simply being stuck in very old ways of thinking. Example - X-ray technology. They have been digital with X-ray and imaging for years. Light years of improvement. I’ve asked, since I’m a nurse working in an area of medicine that uses this tech daily - the Radiology techs coming out of school now are educated on how images were made as more of a historical reference; not a hardline how to. I imagine Lightroom might make more sense to someone if they were introduced how things were done in the darkroom days prior to digital. I admit I did not know what dodge and burn ACTUALLY meant back 10(+) years ago - until educating myself further. So, yeah - I get what you’re saying. I just don’t think that the modern photographer NEEDS those minute building blocks to turn out some compelling images; hence the iPhone photography generation. They don’t care and they don’t have to care. Times have changed.

    • @slickhatter9812
      @slickhatter9812 3 года назад +1

      Because most blind test are not really done in tonal variety as well showing the flat unedited files. A monochrome shines with higher iso, sharpness and tonal variations and with heavy editing the files are malleable and rich across the spectrum. It is not for everyone for sure but who needs it understand the differences and finally i would say monochrome cameras are kings of the night you can push this camera to 20k iso and still outperform any camera in low light with great details and fidelity. So your choice amazing BNW or versatility but don’t think they are equal because they are not.
