A key factor you missed in the discussion about LEGO's Avatar vs Spongebob strategy is that Spongebob had already been on for years and was massively popular. Avatar was in its second season and doing solidly with its target audience, but had nowhere near the popularity of Spongebob. Pitting the two themes against each other doomed Avatar from the start.
they were completely different cartoons. spongebob was a simple show, basically there to sell merchandise by the time avatar was still focused on telling its complex story.
So Spongebob was obviously more appealing to younger audiences, because it was around for some time and was popular. As for adult audiences, I'd wager they were put-off by the weird designs. No offence to Spongbob, but ATLA was the better of the two shows. I'd love to see actual sets made by LEGO for ATLA today. Just tossing out ideas: Obviously, we could do with an update of the two sets they already released. The Fire Nation ship would need a better hull, of course, and it would be better if the interior included some actual rooms, like Zuko's quarters. The smaller boat coming out of the back and the draw bridge at the front are nice play features, though, despite the execution leaving a lot to be desired. Add in an Iroh minifig, and that would be perfect. The Air Temple could be expanded (sans the weapons rack, which seems out of place), and maybe a better version of the door locking mechanism could be developed. Maybe the Fire Nation projectile launcher could be upgraded into a Fire Nation tank, and they could add Teo (the disabled kid) with his glider so players could recreate the assault on the Northern Air Temple. Additional season one ideas: A small set for the southern water tribe with Sokka, Katara, and Gran Gran (just a few tents, a fire place, and Sokka's watchtower). A set with Zuko and a fire nation soldier on a Komodo-Rhino attacking Kyoshi Island (with the Kyoshi Warriors dojo (training house), a statue of Kyoshi, and Sokka and Suki in Kyoshi Warrior attire). Avatar Roku's Temple, complete with Fire Sages and Roku himself. A set with Jet and his freedom fighters in the trees ambushing Fire Nation soldiers. A set with Zuko, as the Blue Spirit, escaping with Aang from the Fire Nation prison with Admiral Zhao and two Yuyan archers in pursuit. A battle pack set, perhaps, with Master Pakku and two Water Tribe warriors facing off against Fire Nation troops. I've seen an idea for the Spirit Oasis, which would include Princess Yue, as well as Team Avatar and the Fire Nation forces. A set with Koh the Face Stealer in his home probably wouldn't be bad either. Season two ideas: Someone had an idea of a set with the Gaang (Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph) resting at their campsite with Appa. That would be good. Maybe they could make an Omashu set, with a crane to carry King Bumi's prison case and a slide system for Aang and Bumi to escape from Azula on (like the mine cart system from the Temple of Doom set). Mai and Ty Lee would be included too, of course. A set of the train that Azula chases the Gaang in in episode 8, with one of those lizard things they ride in the rear compartment (that would just be Azula's Team and maybe a Fire Nation soldier piloting the train). Wan Shi Tong's Library. It could be a large set (similar to the Arkham Lego sets) with the exterior inspired by the drawings of the Library we see in the show. Maybe there could be a sand platform element on top to showcase the Library being underground, and, of course, it would include Wan Shi Tong himself. Not sure how LEGO would be able to make the Drill, but if they could pull that off that would be nice. The Jasmine Dragon (Iroh's tea shop) would be a nice build (though that could be made for season three and feature the Gaang in formal attire for the final moments of the show). The Earth King's palace, because I think people would like to recreate the part where Team Avatar storm the palace in episode 18. Would also include Long Feng. A large set for the catacombs bellow Ba Sing Se (since it's a pivotal moment in the show) with Aang, Katara, Zuko, Azula, and two Dai Li Agents. Season three ideas: A set for Master Piandao's courtyard and weapons forge (with Sokka and Paindao training). A "Day of the Black Sun" assault set with a submarine and a tower for the Fire Nation soldiers. Someone did a MOC of the Eastern Air Temple, which was pretty cool (someone said in the comments it could include Combustion Man, which would be even better). A set based on the escape from Boiling Rock Prison (including a working cable car). A set for the War Balloon (with Zuko and Sokka so they can create a very funny scene). A set for the larger Fire Nation Airship (which could also feature Aang vs Ozai). A Ba Sing Se Set with a partially demolished wall and the White Lotus members fighting the Fire Nation. The Fire Nation Palace, which could include Zuko and Azula so players could do the final Agni Kai.

I'd absolutely love an updated version of zukos ship, or a buildable aapa. Maybe a firelord vs aang set with the airship, or even a joke set based on the ember island play, with a bunch of silly knock off characters. It would be super cool

I can't believe I bought two of the fire Nation ships on discount for $30 each at Walmart back in maybe 2008! I usually don't really buy anything other than Star Wars or City sets but, I needed the gray parts to build an Imperial Juggernaut. Somewhere I have those minifigures....
Is it possible that using the blockier, stacked parts for the hull is also a fiscal move for LEGO at the time? I would assume if the part is extremely common, printing more copies of it could be cheaper than molding a new unique part for the hull. Either way, gotta agree it doesn't look the greatest

Okay, so I have perhaps some good news on the state of LEGO Avatar. In Fortnite, Fortnite has already shown off their first LEGO Korra design, which will be usable in the LEGO mode. Meaning that LEGO has a rendered version of a future Korra minifigure. And, very soon, we’ll be getting more ATLA content in Fortnite, meaning we’ll likely get more new LEGO models for Aang, along with anybody else who appears in the collaboration. While nothing concrete just yet, if this does come to fruition, we could very well be seeing new LEGO Avatar sets in the near future.
A frustrating aspect of this was also that the sets only launched in North America. I knew of them at the time and wanted one, but couldn't buy them because of this regional restriction.
personally i think 2005 was the BEST for lego builds, I'm not really a huge fan of todays style of building. i personally miss the huge blocky builds, burps and silly figures... maybe its nostolgia but the modern builds feel so small and padded with random small parts. IMO kids dont really care that much about the little details, i know as a kid I definetly prefferd bigger blocky sets so i could take them apart and build whatever i wanted without all the tiny peices that easily got lost and were hard to use for my simple builds.

Sand sailer wouldve been a cool small build, or the swamp golem controlled by the swamp bender. A bigger air temple wouldve been cool. Buildable appa was a missed opportunity but youre right it mightve been an unholy abomination.
I prefer the older sets, like these from 2006. I got some big sets to play with. Today you spent to much of money for a tiny set, thats looks maybe a little better, but is not so playable.
Oh, what I would give to see them take another shot at this. Countless set pieces and vehicles to choose, from Iroh’s tea shop, the Unagi, the war balloons, the crystal caverns, the Boiling Rock gondola; the possibilities are endless. It’s insane that we never even got an Appa out of the first wave.
Imo, this line makes me miss when legos looked less complicated and more like toys with a ton of fun gimmicks. The stylized minifigs looked more interesting than the same over detailed faces and bodies over and over. The art in the instructions was cool too, but its a shame it had to be ruined by the black brick errors. Legos seem to move closer towards model kits every year with sets becoming more and more detailed.

Not to mention avatar studios is making some big projects besides the live action and they would want to advertise it so they might reach for more collabs.

I found out last month about the lego avatar set. I was at a shop with my wife and I saw momo in the minifig case. I was pretty confused, but the guy showed me the full set.
I would love to see lego revisit this theme, with hopes of actually making some decent scenes. It is a highly desirable, and beloved animated series. It is a shame that the Lego Idea’s did not get passed. There are many people who would have bought Appa
Having LEGO as my special interest and not having watched Nickelodeon while ATLA or Korra were releasing puts me in the cursed spot of being more familiar with these two sets than the show itself. Legit the most I’ve seen of ATLA is IHE’s review of the film and a preview of the Netflix reboot while we were testing my brother’s new TV.
I REALLY wished that Lego didn’t compete the SpongeBob and Avatar lines against each other. In this day and age where the two series are both Nickelodeon’s most valuable and prestigious franchises, BOTH could be Lego themes side-by-side with each other and would sell very well.

I looked up the SpongeBob vs ATLA packaging and I'm not surprised at all kids didn't buy ATLA. SpongeBob Lego sets were more iconic places, the Crusty Krab and Squidward + SpongeBob's house. ATLA is such a vast world with so many large places that are too big for such a small Lego set, and the characters are constantly moving instead of coming back to the same places, most of the time, so it's harder to do a place that's as memorable on a small scale. Plus, the SpongeBob Lego packaging was fun and colorful vs ATLA Lego packaging that was entirely too dull for a toy aisle.
Just imagine those airbender castles, earth kingdoms, fire nation vehicles, battle scenarios etc etc in Lego.. Am I just dreaming or will Lego ever listen -_-
I hope lego makes sets on the live action so that there's an excuse to have more avatar sets but since nickelodeon owns it, it probably won't happen since they have a partnership with another brick compagny

There are some interesting design choices with those minifigures.
I think the lack of building techniques at the time really held back these releases
We seriously need more lego avatar sets, I am still a big fan of the show to this day and really wish to see what they would look like nowadays.
I actually got to see one of these on retail once, I thought it was a knockoff LEGO set due to the poor quality of the render on the box.

Having LEGO as my special interest and not having watched Nickelodeon while ATLA or Korra were releasing puts me in the cursed spot of being more familiar with these two sets than the show itself. Legit the most I’ve seen of ATLA is IHE’s review of the film and a preview of the Netflix reboot while we were testing my brother’s new TV.

Tbf there's so much potential for a relaunch of avatar sets. Like Avatar state could be pretty well represented by like a Ninjago spinner or something

I think that the hairpiece from Kanan (from Star Wars rebels) works pretty well to replicate his hair in the show

I REALLY wished that Lego didn’t compete the SpongeBob and Avatar lines against each other. In this day and age where the two series are both Nickelodeon’s most valuable and prestigious franchises, BOTH could be Lego themes side-by-side with each other and would sell very well.

well played toys has the rights to make nickelodeon building sets. they currently make SpongeBob and ninja turtles. but it could be Disney not wanting lego to make sets for companies competing in the kids television market.

I looked up the SpongeBob vs ATLA packaging and I'm not surprised at all kids didn't buy ATLA. SpongeBob Lego sets were more iconic places, the Crusty Krab and Squidward + SpongeBob's house. ATLA is such a vast world with so many large places that are too big for such a small Lego set, and the characters are constantly moving instead of coming back to the same places, most of the time, so it's harder to do a place that's as memorable on a small scale. Plus, the SpongeBob Lego packaging was fun and colorful vs ATLA Lego packaging that was entirely too dull for a toy aisle.

I hope lego makes sets on the live action so that there's an excuse to have more avatar sets but since nickelodeon owns it, it probably won't happen since they have a partnership with another brick compagny
Seeing as how Fortnite now has Avatar crossovers incoming, we can expect new official Lego designs for these characters too, and that's pretty cool
