- Space weather and solar activity are one of the most fascinating things humans are actively studying, but solar flares and coronal mass ejections or CME's can mean trouble for our increasingly technological world. The Sun's level of activity undergoes an 11 year cycle. Solar maximum means there's a lot more magnetic activity going on with our star, and this maximum is coming this 2024. So, are we in any trouble?

He explains what to expect if the Sun has any activity. The channel has videos on what has happened in the past with our Sun and shifting of the magnetic poles. Funny that every other solar maximum has been a period of high sunspot activity. And we have always had a period of high solar flare activity during solar minimums.
If the Sun is a gaseous plasma, how do you get the black-body radiation spectrum? Gases do not emit like that.
Our solar field is weakening and is very likely down 25% or more. That is a major issue. If a Carrington Event happened today with our weakening field it would be worse than is being discussed. FYI, our sun is going to micro nova as soon as the 2040s

I'm absolutely fascinated that the sun can send so much electricity directly into our powerlines and other electrical circuits that it overloads and fries everything. And there's another incident where a solar flare detonated dozens of our anti-ship mines during the Vietnam war...
What will exactly happen to mobile phones? Should we take cautions like turning off the phone before such an event or do more than that?
Use the battery to start a fire when the grid goes... the rest is junk. What point is there in a cell phone when all the equipment on the towers is fried and the factories that produce those electronics are fried. You could save it for 30 years and maybe they will be back up by then.
True but you can read an SD card with offline backups of maps and Wikipedia, videos, pdfs, etc. Can carry an entire library of info and run for days in airplane mode off of a few hours of solar charging. Wrapped in metal they should survive. Probably even not wrapped if they aren't plugged into long wires. I suppose the cosmic rays might flip some bits in the solid state storage. That's fairly common already and usually not fatal to the whole drive, just files. Not sure we will know until we know.
What about the Earth's magnosphere getting weaker because of the pole shift happening?

But you didn't address one very important aspect. The Earth's weakening magnetic field.
Think of it like a Kevlar vest for stopping bullets. Our magnetic field protects us from the sun's harmful energy. And now, layers of that protection are being peeled away.
Eventually something as little as an X1 flare will have the impact on Earth equal to an X 50 flare.
At the rate the magnetic field is declining, we won't need solar maximum to send us back to the Stone age. Perhaps even something as simple as an M-class flare of long duration will do it.
One major concern even if we repair out networks is the loss of data
especially as we are now relying almost totally on digital records.

The Carrington event caught telegraph offices on fire and caused range fires from barb wire fences. Coal miners in Colorado went to work at 2am in the morning. It lasted about 5 days and was an X class 34 event. Some people experience ringing in their ears during strong solar events. Animals might get turned around. X CLASS 5O would put us permantly in the dark

You mentioned the magnetic field but I think you are missing the point of the current state of the magnetic field that plays into the equation. For instance the auroral event you mentioned March 13 1989, that was a X15 event to cause that low latitude aurora but the last few we have had to push way south were induced by much much smaller events. In 1989 the magnetic field was at least 30% stronger than it is today. Given the government has stopped updating (publicly) magnetic field strength in 2017 we can only guess that amount at the moment. Its increase of loss from 10% per century to 10% per decade (since 2000), and last measurements, accelerating even more. By 2050 given the numbers that is 50%(if no acceleration occurs) less of a shield than the year 2000 and around 75% less than than the Carrington event. Another aspect I think most miss given their limited knowledge of electromechanical systems in general is that when these events occur it will raise the voltage potential of the ground state normal provided by.. ground, to a positive and that is what will kill most electrical devices. I don't know about you guys but I can live without the grid, is the average UV index of 26 that will get me when the time comes..

I believe it would be more accurate and useful to say the SUN has a 22-year Cycle -- Eleven years of ONE magnetic orientation, then flip to the Opposite polarity for the next Eleven years. Of course, if there is no real difference from the point of view of beings living on the various planets and moons, then after all, one eleven-year period might be practically indistinguishable from another. Not meaning to be contrary...
That was fun and informative but as always your voice overs make it so darn enjoyable. I think it’s amazing that earth 🌏 absorbed an alien EMP pulse in 1859 and survived! We are unbeatable!

Build up of IPD over the next couple/few decades may cause a unforcasted disturbance in the solar cycles. Things are already getting very interesting.
And yet despite this very good presentation of the Standard Solar Model it mentions none of the serious problems and outright contradictions it contains, including one that always makes me smile when I hear references to the 'Solar Surface', which is not real according to the Standard model.
The flare section was also very disingenuous as it not only ignored recent papers showing that G type stars can indeed hit the X-1000 strength which would sterilise the planet on a direct hit, neither is the collapsing planetary magnetic field mentioned which means lower powered flares do much more damage.

Why doesn't all the atoms fusion at once?
Good question. Only in the core of the Sun does it get hot and dense enough for hydrogen atoms to fuse into helium atoms. The rest of the Sun is gas being pulled in by the pull of gravity, while the temperature and density at the core generate energy and heat radiating outwards, and so the whole thing is a stable ball of hot plasma.

What is a micro nova? A thousand nano novae? A million of pico novae?
@@EugenethePhilostopher it's a newer term. They're reoccurring nova that we previously thought were not possible. They're smaller but are not catastrophic failures that destroy the star. The star remains and goes through a period of excursion. Think large a enough cme to block out a large amount of light but not enough to cause collapse. There's the possibility of Betelgeuse having been an example of this.

Please tell me if you would, what would happen if there were Suns Poles and the Earth's Poles were to flip almost at the same time and the Earth were to be hit with a major Magnet ( EMP ) during that time ? Realizing that if the Earth's Poles Flip it may very well reduce the strength of the Earth's Magnetic field anywhere from 50% to 100% meaning the Earth's Magnetic field, even if for just a short period of time could be non existent and during that time the Earth gets hit with a Massive Coronal Ejection.
