      It took me a week to say, "anniyonghasaeyo" but now it takes hours to a day to learn, several new words, in both Korean and chinese.
      As time goes on, it gets easier to learn new words and retain them.

    When I first took Chinese class, my teacher spent very little time with ping ying in the beginning. We mainly learned how to write new words and how to pronounce those words, then just remember the sound for each particular word we learned. Then we would use those words in a sentence. After we would try to read a passage using the words we have learned so far. I think that is very effective too, but then again most of the people in my class were Chinese American students who presumably speak Chinese at home.

    • @YoyoChinese

      You are exactly right! Focusing on pronunciation when you first start learning a new language is the key to having a good foundation for your speaking skills.
      Many people think you need to be a singer to master Mandarin - but you don't! Even the most monotone, tone-deaf people can speak this language. But I'm certain being a singer will give you a big boost as you train your mouth and voice to make these sounds.

    This is the most beautiful chinese teacher I've come across on youtube. The way you explain is really good because you do it slowly and enjoyable at the same time... as it should be for someone who's trying to learn from zero. For a native spanish speaker who also speaks english fluently and a little of german it becomes easier, but gosh..this is still difficult. Not to mention the writing, which is another world

    From what I understand (Wikipedia) there is a little bit of a difference between ch and q. Ch is retroflex, meaning curl your tongue back and touch the tip to the edge of the alveolar ridge (the hard bump behind your top teeth). For q, it alveolo-palatal, which I think means you lay the body of your tongue against the slope of the alveolar ridge. Knowing that, in the pinyin ü, your tongue is in a very similar place, so it kind of makes sense that it always comes after q.

    • @senxiv4232
      @senxiv4232 8 лет назад +1

      That's what I thought as well. I found it a little strange when she said that those two sounds are the same, but perhaps she is trying to just not complicate things too much.
      On the matter of q, x and zh though, I am partially tongue-tied so it's a little hard to know if I'm positioning my tongue right at times.
      I could be wrong, but I feel a though (positioning of the tongue aside) with ch, sh and j the air glides over the tongue whereas with q, x and zh the air almost glides under it.
      I remember being so happy when it came to learning the c and z sounds as I'd already learnt those sounds in Japanese in the form of tsu and dzu (つ/づ). ^_^
      Also.... she says that the r sound is pronounced with a j-like sound, but I swear in most of the things I have heard Chinese in, it sounds similar to a Japanese r, but stronger. Not at all like a j.
      It's hard to debate this because she is a native speaker though and I'm not. =x

      She did explain it afterwords. I think she was just trying to not have people freak out. Also, if you write both sounds in English, they’d be ch because Chinese ch doesn’t exist in English. So that might also have been what she was going for.

    A good lesson on two of the hardest sounds in Chinese, 'Chu' and 'qu'.
    Shui and xue can be another quite hard one for English speakers to differentiate at first.
    It is nice that you appreciate that pinyin is not English. Too many Standard Chinese teachers take it for granted that English speakers will automatically understand pinyin.
