when I first started learning chinese I fell in love with the language immediately. it was like a new part of me was born which was always meant to be there. that's why I love your videos. keep it up!
For American English speakers there is something else about the 'r' one that took me a while to find out. You might be pushing the sides of your tongue against your teeth when you pronounce an 'r' or 'l' in English and when you see the 'r' when learning these pronunciations you might be accidentally doing the same. So if you are, just try consciously relaxing the back and/or sides of your tongue. This helped me a lot when I was learning Korean. Technically I'm not 100% sure this applies for Chinese but I don't see how it wouldn't. Too bad this is an older video now. Hopefully some people see this lol
I'm a Cantonese speaker trying to brush up my Mandarin. This video is so helpful! I never knew about the tongue positions because when we speak Cantonese, our tongues are completely relaxed. No wonder why there's a saying "天不怕地不怕,最怕廣東人講普通話" haha! Thank you Grace!
This video of pinyin ponunciation is far and away the best video lesson for doing this. The detail of lip shape, tongue position, and air flow shown by and explained by Grace is exactly what is needed to learn this. I have had a lot of problems saying these sounds correctly, so no one understands me (most of the time) when I am saying words that use these sounds, except for standard phrases that are always easily understood. Thanks for taking the time and making the effort to do such an excellent job teaching how to pronounce these pinyin sounds.
Hi Grace! you're amazing!! 谢谢你!!真的 I've been looking for videos that would show me exactly what you did, with the tongue and mouth position and even that drawing. It's very similar to "tajweed" which is the way to pronounce arabic to read the Quran. They use exactly the same drawing and explain exactly which part of the tongue touches which part of the palate/teeth/gums to pronounce a specific letter. I always wanted to find the equivalent for Mandarin because I thought just mimicking the sounds wouldnt be enough. I can't wait to watch more of your videos! edit: can i just add, i love that there's no background music in your explanations and you give time to practise. It's so perfect. I find background music so distracting and it always turns me off certain videos.

Thank you, Grace. This is the best lesson on pin-yin I have seen. Your explanation is very clear from your pictures showing the positions of tongue, teeth and air flows.
This was SO helpful and also as someone with a linguistics background, this is a really good demonstration to anyone who likes learning (about) languages how IPA can be super useful! if you can read IPA with a little practice you'll be able to figure out the exact tongue/lip positioning just from the symbols.

Thank you for these lovely videos! I just started learning Chinese and honestly the sounds have been harder than the tones so far. I appreciate you using the IPA and mouth diagrams. It helps a lot.
When you showed the IPA for zh/sh, my immediate reaction was: wait a minute, I've already learned a Western language (Swedish) with those two sounds! Now my problem is getting used to starting a syllable with them; unlike Mandarin, Swedish usually puts [ʂ] and [ʈʂ] at the END of words like _fors_ [fɔʂ] 'waterfall' or _hörts_ [hɶʈʂ] 'been heard'.

Hi! I'm Grace's classmate, just here to add that according to the book 《語言學綱要》by Ye and Xu (1997), there are two ways of pronouncing the sound "r". In page 69, it was stated that "r" can be pronounced as /ɻ/ which is the same as the English rhotic "R" sound. But some people also pronounce it as /ʐ/, which has a certain "z-ish" vibe to it, mainly heard in the Mainland. This sound does not exist in English, but for Italian, Russian, Polish or speakers of other languages stated in this wikipedia page: ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiced_retroflex_fricative ), please do check the sound out! It makes you sound cool (or at least I think so! haha) Anyways, great video, Grace, as always!
What you say about Italian and Russian is wrong. Those sounds can br heard in Polish, Czech, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Hungarian, French and some other languages. The way you pronounce the r changes depends on what vowel follows it. You should not try to teach if you don't know what you're talking about.
Rodrigo Neustadt they literally make a detailed, helpful addition and bc they made 1 mistake which doesn’t even have to do with chinese, that they shouldnt help ppl learn chinese. bruh
@@rodrigoneustadt6302 /ʐ/ is a common phoneme in Russian and Polish but not Czech. When Russian and Poles say /ʐ/ (spelled ж for Russian and ż/rz for Polish) Czechs say /ʒ/ (As in English word vision). Compare Russian жабаˈ/ʐabə/ and Polish żaba /ˈʐa.ba/ with Czech žába /ʒaːba/.
Very much thanks to you grace, I have had very hard time learning this sound 'r' but you said it so simply that I learnt it in seconds 🙏🙏🙏🙏 Also, you are too cute🤗🤗
Fantastic video. Really good. Probably the best video on this topic. I love that you use Zhuyin, I prefer that to pinyin because each sound is properly represented, and not hidden by a romanized substitution that do not include all the sounds. However, you say that in English they don't have the 3 sounds you talked about in this video...and I think they do but only as a form of tonal extension when they pronounce certain words. I'll explain. For example: Zhi is like Ger in German Chi is like Chur in Church Shi is like Shir in Shirt Equally, for other tricky sounds like ji, qi: Ji is like Jee in Jeep Qi is like Chee in Cheese I don't know if it will help someone or add more confusion but those helped me at the beginning when I did not have any reference to imitate the sounds.
This is wonderful! I really love the inclusion of IPA explanations, but the diagrams of where and how to articulate it are phenomenal! This is so helpful! ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for the vid, I’ll try to keep practicing. I think you should do a video about the differences between c, s and z. Or x, j and q. Or something related to those. I think those are the most difficult for some people learning chinese.
☝😄Никогда не думал, что реально произнести "ши", а не "шы" Оказывается, много, что реально) Классный урок!! И всегда при приветствии и прощании хочется помахать рукой в ответ))

This sound does not exist in English, but for Italian, Russian, Polish or speakers of other languages stated in this wikipedia page: ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voiced_retroflex_fricative ), please do check the sound out! It makes you sound cool (or at least I think so! haha)
Anyways, great video, Grace, as always!
Thank you for this information!
This is pretty interesting! The sampled voice is like saying allá with an Argentinian accent - though typically this sound is very rare in Spanish.
I watched tons of videos about it but this is an incredible explanation, thank you!
Thank you so much!!!! What a wonderful video! You explain it so clearly, it all makes sense now. Now I'm going to go practice. Ha!
Very much thanks to you grace, I have had very hard time learning this sound 'r' but you said it so simply that I learnt it in seconds 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Also, you are too cute🤗🤗
Good job! Just what I needed, very concise too. Subscribed
This was the video that made it click for me. You win 😂. Subscribed! Thanks for making this!
🥳🥳
Amazing. I always wanted to know where to place my tongue and lips for different sounds and words. Thank you so much for this!
Really difficult for me from Korea. How wonderful Chinese people are
Fantastic video.
For example:
Zhi is like Ger in German
Chi is like Chur in Church
Shi is like Shir in Shirt
Equally, for other tricky sounds like ji, qi:
Ji is like Jee in Jeep
Qi is like Chee in Cheese
I don't know if it will help someone or add more confusion but those helped me at the beginning when I did not have any reference to imitate the sounds.
This is so helpful, thank you! Especially at the beginner level where its very hard to segregate those sounds.
This is just what I needed! Thank you very much for the video. Goes right to the point and is really helpful
This is wonderful! I really love the inclusion of IPA explanations, but the diagrams of where and how to articulate it are phenomenal! This is so helpful! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank You Grace. I have to say some of these sounds are challenging for me
You are a great teacher. Thank you so much.
Super useful video. Thank you so much.🥰🌹🌹🌹
Finally i understand how to pronounce them correctly, 谢谢老师!
That's really helpful and easy to understand and mimic! Good job!
good teacher!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍
That paper demo was great!
And overall, really nice explanation. I still don't quite understand the IPA, but the tongue pictures really helped.
Thanks for the vid, I’ll try to keep practicing.
I think you should do a video about the differences between c, s and z. Or x, j and q. Or something related to those.
I think those are the most difficult for some people learning chinese.
luigi0654 You’re welcome!
Yes I know.😊 I’m planning to do the pronunciation training “j q x” in the near future!
Thank you so much for this video! This is the first time, I really understood the difference and not just imitate sounds while positioning the tongue.
☝😄Никогда не думал, что реально произнести "ши", а не "шы"
Оказывается, много, что реально)
Классный урок!! И всегда при приветствии и прощании хочется помахать рукой в ответ))
