The third tone has traditionally been taught as a "falling-rising" tone (and the symbol looks like it drops and then rises), but if you listen to native speakers, you realize this isn't actually how the third tone sounds in real speech. When non-native speakers learn the third tone as a "falling-rising" tone, they often end up pronouncing it incorrectly - which leads to frustration when native speakers don't understand you! You can read more about why we teach the third tone as a "low flat tone" here: goo.gl/TjM7Az
The "may" "what" "uhhh" "no" framework is just brilliant. This should be an essential course for all beginning mandarin students whose native language is English. Wish I had this when I started studying mandarin 8 years ago. Bad habits are hard to shake.
BINGO! this teacher gets it...finally found someone using the known to introduce the unknown 1.) MAYbe,? high, flat 2.)What?? rising 3.) Uh... low fat 4.)NO! falling Great Lesson!

All that matters is you are practicing out loud. You can't improve your speaking skills without actually speaking! Even if your neighbours will think you're crazy!

@Fiker Gaming I think you should go back. If you were able to study for a month INTENSELY, It's worth it. It's very hard to get back motivation, but sometimes you just have to force yourself to get back on track. I'm sure someday these skills will pay off and you'll be glad you've had the initiative to learn. If you're really that hesitant to learn, at least try to learn the fun way. For example; one chinese character a day in a spare time, and try to remember it throughout the day ;)
She has an evident north american accent, and her website confirms that: "A Beijing native and long-time resident d'USA, Yangyang's passion is not just teaching Chinese or English, but also helping bridge the cultural gap between China and the West.".
OMG, the way you explained the third tone is amazing. I'm a native Chinese speaker and tried to teach my friends the third tone before but couldn't do it. Now I know how, thank you!
Thank you for this kind comment... I really appreciate it! Some people are skeptical of our unique approach to teaching the 3rd tone, so it really helps when native speakers help confirm our approach will help them make this sound correctly! 谢谢!❤️
Me: Ok, I'm gonna die trying to learn these tones. Ms. Yangyang: You use these tones in English every day so stop being a baby! I'm so glad I finally found this video. It explains tones in a way I can understand.
You really can learn to make these sounds and learn to speak this amazing language! It really helps when you get clear explanations for what you are learning. We recommend you first get a foundation for spoken Mandarin before you start to learn Chinese characters. It’s a lot easier to learn how to read and write when you already know the vocabulary and sounds the characters you are learning form. And it’s a lot easier to focus on your pronunciation and the basic grammar and vocabulary of spoken Mandarin when you aren’t also trying to memorize hundreds of characters. We recommend you first complete Level 2 of the Beginner Conversational Course before you start our Chinese Character Course I. At that point you have enough of a foundation for the language to start learning characters, and it will help you remember new vocabulary as you continue in the conversational courses.
OMG! The third tone is flat most of the time!!! Almost every site/book teaching the tones illustrates the third tone as a bounce. And then when you learn the first words you're utterly confused, because they're spoken completely different. This video was an eye opener. I guess this has already been said a thousand times, but thank you so much. Til now I thought Chinese is ridiculously complicated, but now it turns out to be a lot of fun. :-)
That's exactly right! I think for many people, it's a surprise to realize they already use tones when they are speaking - to show their emotion, or lifting their tone to ask a question. It makes tackling Chinese tones a lot less scary when you realize you can already make these sounds with your voice.
that's helpful to keep in mind because I've heard english speakers learning mandarin (including myself hahaha) change tones when they want to convey a certain emotion, which is wrong and can totally change the meaning!
there is a dutch dialect (in belgium) that uses tones to change the meaning of words (I have had misunderstandings with them due to this, as I only speak standard dutch and a dialect without the use of tones, luckily they know standard dutch and understand me)... I wish I spoke that dialect, I suspect it's easier for them to get into the mandarin tones.
***** It is a great lesson but I have confusion about your 3rd tone . It is different than that I learnt from other chinese teachers. Is it because of your Taiwanese dialect ?
+Hari Pathak I don't think it's her Taiwanese dialect accent. The third tone in Chinese actually is not FULL third tone when Chinese say it: We did half third tone. NOT all Chinese teachers teach equally. Some may just start and still trying to figure out how to teach, some may be good but didn't tell you the half third tone because he/she thinks it will confuse the students, so they don't even mention it just for students' sake. Keep in mind, even third tone is like a check mark, but when Chinese say it, it does sounds like what Yangyang Laoshi said: uh.... (but shorter within half second, not like what she demonstrate over 1 second which she might just want to emphasize it to make the point). You can practice with saying: 好. It is short and low. As a Chinese teacher myself, I do think Yangyang Laoshi is a good teacher and teaches with logic mind to make all her learners understand easily. Of course, she may not teach everything because it's not the point at the time (according to students' ability - all teachers do that) and the students are not there yet (no need for them to know yet). Of course, each teacher has their own teaching philosophy. You just have to ask! Also clear one point: NOT all Chinese teachers from China speak GOOD Beijing accent. Trust me, I heard them all. Some even speak worse accent then Taiwanese teachers. I can only say: there are too many dialects in Chinese language and a lot of teachers have strong dialect accent. That's all. Where the teachers come from is irrelevant! Hope this answers your question instead of making it more confusing.
YangYang, I know this video is old, but I have to say I am shocked, surprised, and super delighted with how you just taught me four tones of Chinese! I love learning languages but I have always decided that Asian languages were a total No-No for me. I was afraid of the alphabets, tones, and sounds that are so different from other European languages, that I figured I would never, ever, be able to learn them. I was afraid. But recently, I got turned on to Korean and I was hooked on my first Asian language! But I still felt the Chinese was a language I would never, ever try, out of fear. I came upon this video by total accident, and just started watching it because it was talking about the tones; and with one simple video, you have totally changed my head around. Now I find that I am utterly in love with it and interested in trying to learn this language! Thank you so much for making this video and showing people, that Chinese is not a language to be afraid of but just to be listening to carefully and embraced.
Thank you for this wonderful comment! Mandarin isn't impossible to learn: you just need clear explanations of the things that seem so strange and difficult when you first start studying. I speak some Chinese (I majored in it in uni) and I was looking for a way to teach some friends of mine tones. Your explanation of tones and your idea of teaching them in pairs is EXCELLENT and narrows what was 4 weeks worth of study for me at uni into 27 minutes! Thanks xx
Thank you for this kind comment! We're glad this lesson helped you teach your friend about Chinese tones, and hope you enjoy continuing your Mandarin studies with us.
Great approach for English speaking learners. The best way to learn tones is probably not to consider Chinese a tonal language. You speak the way you hear others speak. It's more like when you're learning a new song, you don't have to memorize every note Do Re Mi in a new song, instead, you just follow the music that's flowing in your brain, and that's pretty much how you learn the tones. A 3 year-old Chinese kid can speak in correct tones without knowing there's a thing called tones.
@@pasleighlaylay6502 Yeah and one of my Cantoese friend told me that when he entered school he was shocked there're NINE tones in Cantonese. It's interesting how he'd been able to correctly use all that many tones years before he knew they ever existed. You don't tell if a tone's right by looking up the tone numbers 1 2 3 4 in you brain, you can tell a tone is wrong because nobody says it like that, simple, that's essentially how native Chinese speakers brains work.
You put a lot of effort into your lessons. I very much appreciate that. You are a great and effective teacher! You are helping a lot of people. Thank you so much. Keep up the good work!
Dear Yangyang: For me has been extremely difficult to learn tones and mainly when to use which tone whatsoever. I think this is the best video to learn it and I keep repeating it on and on.
I just sooo like the way she teaches and speaks. And her voice? It made me think that there is still hope in learning this language. More or les, it gives me hope. 🤣
You absolutely CAN learn this amazing language! You just need to follow a structured program and make the commitment to study for 30 minutes every single day. I hope you enjoy studying with us on YoyoChinese.com!
Ikr? Many have tried pinyin on me for 20 years but failed. But the MAYbe, what, no, and ummm part just clicked instantly... n im sounding more chinese than i ever before... im jealous with who find this channel early
WOW. I'm Chinese and I speak mandarin as mother tongue. I've never thought tones could be so hard for Chinese learners, and I never knew how to teach my friends the four tones! Your skills are so brilliant! Thank you so much!❤
Thank you for the positive feedback! It isn't impossible for non-native speakers to learn to speak with tones, but it makes a HUGE difference to teach from their perspective and give really clear explanations for how to make these sounds. 加油 (jiā yóu)!
@Edith Yuan I guess it really depends on accent and the speed of talking, I've also heard from other mandarin teacher that it's normally pronounced by dropping a little and staying down.
A suggestion which I have found helps me. I have struggled like never before with learning a foreign language. It is difficult to remember which tone when reading Chinese characters/pingyin. But i have found that by using 4 different highlighter pens, set a different color for for each tone and keep to it by coloring the text. Quite quickly you get the remember the color associated with each tone and whether Pingyin or the Chinese characters I find that I am remembering from the color which tone applies to that word/character. Hope it helps others.
I've spent a lot of time browsing the internet and reading books about Chinese tones and their impact on the meaning of the word, but this might be the best explanation I've ever come across. It's just so simple yet so helpful!!
I used this a few years ago to learn tones, and I have mastered the tones. It just came naturally just like saying a word, you can tell when you mispronounce and when you pronounce it correctly. 加油, 每天我的中文越来越好.
This is such a fun way to remember tones, because linguists actually think Chinese shifted from a non-tonal language to a tonal language based on how old words were spoken. There are super old consonants and other sounds that dropped out of spoken Chinese centuries ago, but it affect the pitch of your voice as you spoke it, and where these old consonants became obsolete, it’s pretty consistent that certain consonants just became certain tones. If I find the video where I learned this, I’ll come back and leave the link in the reply. It was very cool!
I’ve been self learning Mandarin for about 8 months now and just found your channel. I speak Vietnamese as well and we have similar tones too but I kept getting them confused and mixed up with Mandarin. I find this video very helpful and love the “may” “what” “uh” “no” technique!
I can't believe how amazing and understandable this lesson was, I started learning with rosetta stone and it was the most confusing thing ever as it has you associate words with pictures without any explanation at all then just goes to the next lesson leaving you with so many questions rather than answers, learning and mastering these tones will make this process so much easier. Your website is one of the best I've seen and you were meant to do this! You have my full support thank you for the help and the continued help as I'm now going to binge watch the rest of your videos!!!!
The tones with the latin letters with the punctuation marks make so much sense now. I am like true begginer, I can only count and introduce myself right now but I feel that knowing this early on will be sooo helpful

+Kevin LeBlanc The third tone is falling and rising only when spoken in isolation. But when spoken in a sentence, it becomes a low flat tone (sometimes called a "half tone"). Please check out our in-depth blog article about it here: www.yoyochinese.com/blog/learn-mandarin-chinese-third-tone-the-correct-way-to-pronounce-it

I’ve been learning Chinese for a year and a half at school and I’ve finally been able to communicate sentences with tones... except for the the second tone. That one is so hard and thought-provoking for me.
You can master this sound! It's just like learning an instrument: when you first start it is difficult, but with daily practice you are guaranteed to get better. Check out this video for more help pronouncing the second tone: ruclips.net/video/14yLtFoI-d4/видео.html
I was taught that the 3rd tone is a bouncing tone. As a foreign student learning Chinese, I always find it difficult trying to figure the third tone together with other tones in syllables. Thank you sooooooo much for making it easier 😘😘😘
That traditional way of teaching the 3rd tone as a 'falling-rising' tone leads most non-native speakers to totally mispronounce this tone. Very clever, indeed. I found out that the combination of the falling tone + neutral tone is what one makes when speaking 2 syllable words in italian. For example: pizza, mamma, donna, libro.
This is helpful, I think i might have social anxiety practicing this on my room, afraid of ppl hearing me. But after the English one, i feel more confident. Thaanks :)
I’m in high school and have been trying to learn chinese seriously for maybe a year. Tones have always been such a hard concept for me but even in the first 5 minutes I feel more confident than after a year of studies! 谢谢老师!

Hello from the Philippines.currently taking my foreign language in mandarin and this video was really helpful and educational. I find mandarin really interesting. I wish I could speak fluent chinese and visit and learn more about your rich culture.
Oh my god。You just opened up a whole new world for me 。I learned more mandarin within 5 minutes than my first 5 years of learning english in school。People like you spreading their knowledge in a more understandable way for foreigners by explaining everything with resembling examples instead of throwing textbooks at us is a *BLESSING*!!! And you are doing it with such a passion that it motivates me even more to learn it! Keep it on ! We need more people like you!

Im a native russian speaker i had a really Hard time learning english intonation at university. Russian is a pretty flat language with little intonation apart from questions, thats why we ofte sound to english native speakers as boring or uninterested in what's going or around us, but ive never thougt learning english intonation would actually learn chinese. I tooka semester of chinese in university, learnt pretty many characters, but all tones but the questioning sounded 100% the same ŝo i couldnt say anything correctly or understand much. Inconclusion, its much easier to learn chinese though english than russian
i’ve never been so focused on completing a language before, probably because i’ve already seen progress and am able to understand simple sentences, even though it’s only been about a week!
I love your passion and motivation, and I LOVE that you are already seeing progress. Learning Chinese can be so intimidating, but once you take the first steps, you realize your really can accomplish this goal and master this language!

English also uses tones in single words. For example, final voiced consonants cause the previous vowel to have a lower tone. The main difference between "buck" and "bug" is the "bug" has a longer, lower tone.

Very interesting. It makes sense now. It makes me think of acceleration graphs. Increase/decrease voice tone oscillation or constant tone/constant oscillation.
Finally someone who explains the differences especially tone 3! Now starting to make sense for me. I've been dabbling in various courses as recommended by non-native Mandarin speakers before putting any cash into it but struggling to get tones and basics right as pinyin spelling is not always the way as a native English speaker we actually speak. Yangyang Cheng's course just rose to the top of my list after this video!
Thank you for the positive feedback... we really appreciate it! 😊 One of the main reasons people struggle to learn Chinese is that they use traditional resources developed by native speakers who don't consider the particular challenges non-native speakers face. Why does everywhere else I look it says the 3rd tone is down then up?
The third tone has traditionally been taught as a "falling-rising" tone (and the symbol looks like it drops and then rises), but if you listen to native speakers, you realize this isn't actually how the third tone sounds in real speech. When non-native speakers learn the third tone as a "falling-rising" tone, they often end up pronouncing it incorrectly - which leads to frustration when native speakers don't understand you! You can read more about why we teach the third tone as a "low flat tone" here: goo.gl/TjM7Az

its been 11 months since you started chinese how far have you reached dude?
@Fiker Gaming What made you quit? Was it a lack of motivation to go further?
@Fiker Gaming I think you should go back. If you were able to study for a month INTENSELY, It's worth it. It's very hard to get back motivation, but sometimes you just have to force yourself to get back on track. I'm sure someday these skills will pay off and you'll be glad you've had the initiative to learn. If you're really that hesitant to learn, at least try to learn the fun way. For example; one chinese character a day in a spare time, and try to remember it throughout the day ;)

@@YoyoChinese I totally agree with you!! when we are toddlers, we learn how to speak before we learn how to write and read

When we use tones in English, they are more of an expression, the tones for Chinese words are to do with different word meanings
That's exactly right! I think for many people, it's a surprise to realize they already use tones when they are speaking - to show their emotion, or lifting their tone to ask a question. It makes tackling Chinese tones a lot less scary when you realize you can already make these sounds with your voice.
Yeah true, but it is still tones :)
that's helpful to keep in mind because I've heard english speakers learning mandarin (including myself hahaha) change tones when they want to convey a certain emotion, which is wrong and can totally change the meaning!
there is a dutch dialect (in belgium) that uses tones to change the meaning of words (I have had misunderstandings with them due to this, as I only speak standard dutch and a dialect without the use of tones, luckily they know standard dutch and understand me)... I wish I spoke that dialect, I suspect it's easier for them to get into the mandarin tones.
Wow, thanks for all the nice and sweet comments!!!
***** It is a great lesson but I have confusion about your 3rd tone . It is different than that I learnt from other chinese teachers. Is it because of your
Taiwanese dialect ?
Hari Pathak
Hope this answers your question instead of making it more confusing.
wulaoshi thank you very much for your clarification.
You are so welcome! Hope it answers your questions.

This lesson is stupendous. You are an amazing teacher, Yangyang. I feel like I am already getting a hang of Mandarin. Thank you. :)
Your personality is heart warming
Great approach for English speaking learners. The best way to learn tones is probably not to consider Chinese a tonal language. You speak the way you hear others speak. It's more like when you're learning a new song, you don't have to memorize every note Do Re Mi in a new song, instead, you just follow the music that's flowing in your brain, and that's pretty much how you learn the tones. A 3 year-old Chinese kid can speak in correct tones without knowing there's a thing called tones.
OooOOoo. That's a good way to think of it.
@@pasleighlaylay6502 Yeah and one of my Cantoese friend told me that when he entered school he was shocked there're NINE tones in Cantonese. It's interesting how he'd been able to correctly use all that many tones years before he knew they ever existed. You don't tell if a tone's right by looking up the tone numbers 1 2 3 4 in you brain, you can tell a tone is wrong because nobody says it like that, simple, that's essentially how native Chinese speakers brains work.
ill keep that in mind.
You put a lot of effort into your lessons. I very much appreciate that. You are a great and effective teacher! You are helping a lot of people. Thank you so much. Keep up the good work!

I am glad you teach the 3rd tone like this...
Thank you! We try to teach it like a native speaker pronounces it 😊
Hi
Yes, I agree ! I was have previous trouble with the third tone and this one should make this much easier
I thought that was impossible to be more intuitive than the pīnyīn tonal accents
Thank you!
tysm!!

I have studied Chinese for nearly two years, every time I learn a new word I really practice the tones but I find this video is especially good to come back to every now and then to focus specifically on tones
ffs this is so complicated for me because i have a very monotone sarcastic voice
same for me lmao
Practice with me.
Cédrine V sarcasm in itself is very tonal
I can see the monotone in your face 😂
I can feel it even by just reading your statement.

English also uses tones in single words. For example, final voiced consonants cause the previous vowel to have a lower tone. The main difference between "buck" and "bug" is the "bug" has a longer, lower tone.
When you realize that you already make these sounds in your native language, it makes learning Chinese a lot less daunting! Thank you for the comment... I hope you enjoy studying Chinese with us! 🚀

Thank you so much for this, Yangyang.
Your videos and Rocket Chinese (bit.ly/rkchinese) have always been my favorite ways of studying Mandarin.

But its shorter

The best and most beautiful mandarin teacher . Thank you ms YangYang
6:45 into the video she says 2 minutes. Haha.
This is an awesome video by the way. Great job.
One of the main reasons people struggle to learn Chinese is that they use traditional resources developed by native speakers who don't consider the particular challenges non-native speakers face.
We hope you enjoy studying Chinese with us. 🚀
Your English is incredible!
