@@SpacedOutReads confident you won't be disappointed. Looking forward to seeing the review one day. Up there with the best. A nice crescendo too - starts slower and buildy and ramps up on intensity. Bit of a sci-fi edge to them too, which I imagine you will enjoy based on your other reviews. Get them on that reading list bro 😉👊
great video, had to skip the Durfee part cos its next on the TBR as soon as i've finished the sun eater books, love brett and looooove love some Jay Kristoff, keep up the good work!
Five warrior angels! I remember buying book one when it came out based solely on the premise. I didn't want to have to wait until each book was released, so I waited until book 3 was about to come out. Binge read the first, straight to the 2nd, and got the 3rd on the day it released. SO. DAMN. GOOD!!! To this day I still think back on the events that unfolded in that story.... It is so criminally underrated.
i just wonder like what level of creepy as mentioned in the video is it cringe or is it just a couple stares? Because that would probably be the deciding factor if it gets weird weird
Awesome video. You're actually one of the few people I watch with something good to say about the Nevernight books, lol, but you do make them sound very tempting . . .
I've actually never heard of any of these so I'm thankful for the recommendations. Your channel just came up on my feed and I'll be checking it out further. Also, apropos of nothing, you are gorgeous. Really handsome.
Definitely going to check out the Demon Cycle series by Brett (don’t know why they changed it from Painted Man to Warded Man in the states 🤷♂). I absolutely loved the Nevernight Chronicle! I thought it was hilarious how Kristoff kept making fun of himself for writing foot notes. I also had a blast with The Five Warrior Angels. Thanks for the recommendations 🍻
@@abnushagnasty805 Yea, Warded Man is definitely a cooler name, they should have kept it that way in the UK/Aus. So good to hear you enjoyed the other two series, they are so great
I'm about halfway through Book 4 of the Demon Cycle from your recommendation to read The Painted Man. Loving it so far!! Have you read the newest installments yet?
I agree with all of these series. I’ve read them all and they are all tops on my list as well. If you enjoyed these check out Jonathan Maberry and his Kagen the Damned trilogy. Book 3 comes out this month in fact so you don’t have to wait to finish this dark fantasy series!
I haven’t read any of the series that you mentioned so I don’t know how they compare, but my favorite dark and icky book is Perdido Street Station by China Mieville.
Is it ok to throw my own two books into the ring? Shadow of the Winter Moon & Echoes of the Storm by Cam Sinclair are dark fantasy that are definitely not for the faint hearted! 😅
Riven Earth by Zammar Ahmer-grimdark beauty. An absolutely wonderful world. I can’t wait to read the second part of the duology next month. It’s already complete and has some character voice that’s reminiscent of Abercrombie. Masaides-gods eff that dude. And Otto’s a beast. Totally worth checking out. Total I think the duology is under 800 pages. Great choices you threw out there.
My 3 favorite dark fantasy series are Manifest Delusions by Michael Fletcher, Second Apocalypse by R. Scott Bakker and The Dark Tower by Stephen King. Berserk also if you count manga!
Something is going on with the colors in your video. It keeps alternating between blueish and reddish. Maybe you're recording with AWB on (automatic white balance) and for some reason the camera can't decide which is the correct one? Other than that, great picks, all 3 are in my immediate TBR list so I'm happy to hear your recommendations!
Never night Chronicles was great, and even better on the reread via audio... almost like reading for the first time... probably because I didn't even peek at those footnotes the first time... 🤣🤣🤣
I need to give Nevernight another go, i just found the structure and formatting really jarring. I've always been curious about Demon Cycle, maybe some day. FWA maybe after I'm finished reading Tad Williams' Osten Ard stuff. My favourite (and *darkest*) Grimdark Fantasy series I've read is R Scott Bakker's Second Apocalypse. Philosophically, its bleak af. Some Grimdark I do love that gets a mixed reception (at best) is Mark Lawrence's Broken Empire. Another that very few people talk about is Richard Morgan's A Land Fit for Heroes, a Fantasy series with strong Sci-Fi and Horror elements and re-imaginings of iconic Fantasy creatures. Ringil Eskieth is one of the most fascinating and compelling protagonists I've read in Fantasy, a gay man in homophobic society but the only thing separating him and being executed is he's also a war hero.
@@thatsci-firogue Yea, Nevernights writing is definitely an acquired taste to say the least 😅😅😅 I really need to get into Tad Williams and R Scott Baker!!!
@@SpacedOutReads he is a self published author and has two main series (The Obsidian Path & Manifest Delusions). They will definitely give you the icky vibes
I love Painted Man... but then I dropped off after the 3rd book.. I'd like to finish the series but I got less interested as the series went on, just doesn't grab me as much as that first book. Really enjoyed 5 Warrior Angels, although I'm getting tired of 'prophecy' stories, it loses me there. But overall enjoyed this trilogy.
@@chrisgoods It’s an incredible book 1, then the rest are hit or miss aye. I loved the rest but I see they didn’t work for everyone. Yea, it’s good to break up the types of stories you read, too much of any trope can be a pain aye. There’s only so many academy settings I can read in a year.
Sadly, I was extremely disappointed by 'The Five Warrior Angels'. So I just bought another not-well-known grimdark trilogy, 'Bloodsounder's Arc' by Jeff Salyards.
