Euler's Disc (Euler is pronounced 'Oiler') is a fascinating physics toy that mesmerises everyone that sees it.
The base is a slightly concave mirror. There is then a heavy metal disc, which you place on the mirror, and spin. What happens then? Well, just like spinning a coin on a table, the disc both spins and rolls, until it comes to a sudden stop, the final stages being accompanied by a sound of increasing frequency.
A coin spun on a table will not spin for all that long. Euler's Disc, by contrast, spins for a long time before coming to rest. In addition, there are a number of magnetic holographic decals that you can attach to the upper side of the disc to enhance the effect of the spinning action. The best thing really is to watch the video. It is a lot of fun showing this to someone who has not seen it before. The ending is really spectacular. It also has a spectacular name - a finite-time singularity!
Euler's Disc was invented by Joseph Bendik in the 1980s, while he was working for an aerospace firm in California, and spinning coins on the cafeteria table. He named it after Leonhard Euler, a Swiss mathematician and physicist who lived from 1707 to 1783, and who did some of the pioneering work on spinning and rolling objects.

My mother used to run a book store in Los Alamos that was also partially an educational toy store. Had lots of science type toys, the kinds of things scientists would buy for their kids because a lot of scientists came in to buy books they couldn't otherwise find (this was before Amazon). We ALWAYS had Eulers Discs in the store, they were one of the biggest sellers and I played with them all day long. Good times.

The amazing thing about the way the sounds work towards the end. Thats exactly how the gravitational waves sound of two orbiting black holes right before they come together. If you look it up, it is remarkably similar. Both going parabolic.

Well, not being a mathematician and not even good at doing sums, I made my one through trial and error combinations of various unknown bits and bobs like brass shower tap washers etc and d/sided tape or duct tape . Its incredibly impressive if I do say, and I do. What's this Ancient problem ?

Giganotti it’s purely psychological. When you drop something at night it may seem the sound is louder but in reality everything is quiet around especially with everyone sleeping which gives that illusion that whatever you drop sounds louder.
When the noise is increasing, at one point it begins to remind me of the humming noise you experience while on a psychedelic experience.
What's really mind bending is the thought that it's still going after you stop being able to hear it. Motion so fast and small that you cannot hear the frequency or see it moving. In fact, does it ever truly stop? Far out, man.

I used to do this at the end of the night in an Indian restaurant with concrete floors, using big Thali trays. It drove everyone crazy. I'd sometimes line up 4 or five throughout the big echoing empty space and a chorus of them would fill the air. Such a great sound. Only once.

It's crazy how at the end it feels like the sound doesn't match the motion. But when the sound ceased I could truly gauge how heavy this disk actually was.
And at some point the disk developed a uniform and consistent symmetrical motion at which point I thought something grander was about to occur...
