You are genuinely the only youtube channel that I can watch non stop, without your videos becoming grating. Thank you so much for this! I have been fascinated by sand toys ever since I received a Magic Picture Window similar to the Wham-o one you show here. Years later I came across another one at a yard sale. They were enjoyed by my children too.
Tim once again shows us the wonders of sand through the way it flows rather than timers, with an amazing collection of almost hypnotising sand toys! Wonderful. :)
I was thinking if you filmed it close-up, and maybe flipped it to negative, it would be totally passible. Cheap FX without the instant incineration. ;)
The ball-bearing doesn't go through the sand when it's on top of it. When you shake it, a little bit will actually fall through the gap under the ball and make a step for the ball to go upwards, shake by shake, until it's back at the top.
Thankyou for sharing your wonderful collection Tim :) I particularly loved seeing the really old acrobat sand toy, I had seen one of these in the Museum Of Childhood, its fantastic to see it in action!
I love these! About every month or two I'll come back and just binge watch these videos, even the ones I've seen before. Very entertaining! Tim is great at keeping my attention for the long pauses when waiting for something to happen, or even just explaining things that I already know. Fantastic stuff!
I had a few toys like this growing up. They're very relaxing and hypnotic. My favorite was one of the sand-in-water kind with white and black sand. Made lovely patterns.
i wonder how amazing those old days toys were purely close to nature even they were much simpler but yet they were made by those peoples who have deep thoughts and great knowledge about universe and time
Well... no. People being from "old days" doesn't mean they have "Deep thoughts and great knowledge", that's just stupid. They're people, like you and me. They probably just thought "Hey that looks cool".

I'm sure you have seen kinetic sand in stores now, it's like a solid that pours like liquid, it feels moist but never dries out. I think really it is a silica sand. Made in Sweden I believe.
Here is my theory about the sand and the ball bearing. When shaken the sand and bearing become air-born very briefly, and the sand fills in under the ball bearing due to it's weight and mass pushing the sand out of the way as it _jumps_ with each shake.

@8:47 I believe the difference between the sand forming sharp peaks on top and smooth ones on bottom is about sand distribution. On top the sand falls through specific set holes, forming defined peaks and valley. On bottom you have an observable "normal distribution", aka the bell curve. Each grain of sand has more space while falling in addition to being moved by the chaos of other sand falling along with it, so it spreads out. Both make predictable shapes based on the ability for the sand to move, on top movement is more confined, so you get sharper angles. @2:30 I would extend the same normal distribution theory to the magic sand wand. As you toss it up while shaking you have put the large ball and all the sand into a free fall. They should predictably normally distribute. I imagine as the ball is tossed up a certain predictable percentage of sand will land before the ball, and others after. Every time this is done, a percentage of sand above will distribute below. As the as ball is larger and yet falling at an even rate with each grain of sand, every grain that is falling precisely level with the ball is going to end up appearing to be nearly under the ball. It would require dozens (hundreds?) of grains of sand to pile up to be at the mid point of the ball. So with every toss more sand goes under, than above. This eventually puts the ball on top. I would guess this would work no matter the density of the ball and if you had 3 sizes of objects, the largest would always end up on top and the smallest on bottom, so long as there was enough material for such a distribution to be observable.
3:26 not all of them are done this way. I watched someone making it awhile ago. They actually move the sand grains around using a needle or something like that to make the picture.
I remember the first sand toy but the one my family had didn't have pink sand, it had a bluish grey sand so with the white it looked more like mountain ranges, or ocean. I think it was called magic window, or that's the name that popped into my head seeing it
From a physics perspective, the sand in the acrobat box is acting as the battery! Very cool concept, sometimes old technology has ways of entertaining that new tech just doesn't.
I'm 20 years old, I own one of these, it's blue and white though. I know it's long before my time, but my grandparents owned it. When I was little I would always play with it while I was at their house. Now it's mine, in my apartment. Amazing toy.
Before making the famous Pet Rock, the inventor sold "pocket sand" for official use with ninjas. The sand wand works because smaller particles rush below the larger bearing to pack a base
