Very long time Braves fan, I remember the worst to first year like it was yesterday. I'm glad they have at least one world series championship but should have had a couple more. Ironically I think the Indians had the best team they faced in the world series. They were stacked
Chipper Jones was the first athlete I was legit a fan of. Wore my baseball pants like him, watched every game I could. Seems like a cool guy to hang out with.
This was a great podcast. Usually I’m a bit weary when a non racing guest comes on as it’s usually an hour or two of someone saying how hard they worked to get to where they are and trying to be a motivational speaker. I’ve never watched baseball in my life and I was absolutely loving this podcast and learnt so much!
I became a Braves fan the year before Chipper came to the majors in 1993. A friend from Atlanta told me, "Watch Chipper Jones, he's going to be a great one."
Chipper and Dale sr.... my childhood in one. I wore my stir ups like chipper during the week playing ball and was sitting on the couch screaming at the tv for the #3 every weekend
Favorite player behind Cal Ripken Jr...Chipper was always pretty nice and signed a lot when i was a kid at the back player parking gate at Turner....Smoltzy and Glavine were the nicest and would sign forever when they would get out of their cars...but my favorite momento from those times is when John Rocker signed my jersey lol
Not related, but I think Paul Tracy would be a great guest on the the DJD. As a Canadian racing fan I’m interested to hear stories about how racing is in Canada
Charlie Finley (owner of the A's) complained about pine tar getting on the baseballs that they would be discarded. As owner, he paid for the baseballs. He didn't want to pay for as many basballs so he asked for that rule about how high pine tar could go on the bat. He was just being cheap.
One thing he would’ve been right on, but the owners didn’t listen because he was so cheap. He wanted almost every guy to be FA every year, not have FA classes where guys get more because they’re the best available. So imagine if Nomar, Jeter, and A-Rod were all FA at the same time in 2000, you think Alex is getting that 252M deal?
@@joeyjohnson4826 you don't need to listen to it on Spotify. You can literally type in Dale Jr podcast on Google in the browser and go to the Dale Jr podcast and listen to all the people whose interviewed through the browser. You don't need to download no stupid Spotify app.
2 of the most laid back and most respected guys in their respective sports. Dale and Larry!! Lol I mean chipper!! He hates being called Larry apparently. Looking at you Mets fans!! 😂
The deal with George Brett game was that Martin knew he always had pine tar too far up on the bat. He waited for the right time to bring it to the umps' attention, but the rule said the bat is to be removed from the game..., not call the batter 'out'. This is why the Royals protested the call, and the 'out' call was reversed, and, the Yankees & Royals played out the rest of the game at a later date with the Royals winning on Brett home run. Nobody ever brings up the actual ending to that game.
I was doing a comparison a year or so ago and it's crazy how closely he lines up with Mickey Mantle. Mantle is ahead on some stats but Chipper has him in some others. Very similar careers. Also funny that Mantle was my dad's favorite player, Chipper mine.
Molina uses it on his chest protector so the ball sticks, go find the video of the ball literally stuck to his chest amd he can’t find it and runner took extra bag. But that’s ok..
He seemed to have a hard time understanding the "how do you apply pin tar to the bat" question. Dale asked it twice and got two answers about pitching lol.
Chippers response was how guys use it to cheat not how its actually applied to a bat. I think the subject of cheating lead him to that response. I think jr can figure out how to apply it to a bat cause chip already answered that when he said the batter applies the tar, then the rosin, then more tar.
The rule on pine tar to far up the bat is because owners are cheap. In the 50s or 60s balls were taken out of play due to pine tar on them. Home teams pay for the baseball. Owners to cut cost, made a rule on how far pine tar could go up a bat to keep it off baseballs.
The pine tar doesn’t increase rpm on baseballs. But that damn spider tack the new stuff it will add 400-600rpm. But it’s impossible to hit so it’s making the sport go down the tubes as a result.
Just like NASCAR, there's been cheating...err...ingenuity in baseball for as long as there has been baseball. The Astros scandal wasn't so much that every other team was pissed off that they did it...every other team was pissed off that they didn't think of it first.
Exactly. Stealing signs is as old as baseball. In his book, Don Zimmer (3rd base coach at the time) said the 84 Cubs were the best team he ever saw at stealing signs.
The Astros is the biggest cheaters ever. Smash the trash can. Even though I hate Chipper when he was torturing my Mets during his career. He was a great all around player in my generation.
Wtf chipper bite the hand that fed ya baseball with all of its rules is the best sport period. Don't be like nascar and change the rules for TV viewers help it stay pure
