  • This is ex-LAMTA/SCRTD 1959 GM transit "fishbowl" bus #5302 from Los Angeles, Ca. beautifully restored to it's original 2-tone green livery.
It features a 6V-71 Detroit Diesel engine with an Allison VH-9 automatic transmission.
It's seen here at it's present location having a little difficulty backing out of a parking space in July of 2010.
Hard to believe this bus will be 53 years old now in the end of 2012!!

I recall riding this particular model fishbowl to and from school daily in the early to late '70's on D.C.Transit...

Am guessing that bus has a three speed automatic transmission. It sounds like the engine is a Detroit 6v71.

The SCRTD bus in the background is #3013; a 1968 suburban. The blue one there is an ex-Santa Monica bus; one of the last GM fishbowls built in the mid 1980's.

Yes, 5510 is still at this yard. It now belongs to a private owner who is currently storing it there.

I thought that the Allison bus automatic transmissions were just plain VH, with VH-9's coming much later.

With all that equipment back there, I guess it never crossed anyone's mind that filling the rut might make it easier to back out. There's no need for an undamaged engine cradle or exhaust. Driving classic buses with burnt up and slipping transmissions is a riot!

Another RTD bus can be seen in the back with the red orange stripes. Is the blue one an ex Santa Monica Big Blue Bus?

That bus is too old for this trauma. Very difficult these days to replace the parts. Who was the idiot who parked the bus in the mud??
