      funny how many lame-o's there are in the scene hating on people who actually innovate in the space. theres more to skating than giant sets and rails (which are sick!). part of the beauty of it is in the individuality and creativeness one can bring. but if you don't fit the "mold" of a "cool skater" you will get shit on by absolute losers who miss the entire point. the core of skating is "anything goes" not "fitting it".

    I think one of the reasons Richie may get hate is the same reason freestyle comps didn’t like the kick flip: it’s hard to say how hard it is. If a trick is a known entity, like a switch heel down a 15 set, then a skater can say “dang that’s hard” and a comp judge can say “that’s worth x points” but knocking over a sandwich board, catching it with a hand plant and power sliding down a hill, only Richie knows how hard that is. And truly only Richie knows how hard that was to conceptualize in the first place. Rock in brother 🤘

      this really is the opposite of the point in this whole message of this video. Richie is speaking to Madars about going against the grain and enjoying skateboarding for it's freeform abillity to do whatever you want free of judgement. The "SOTY" award is the king of defining the established ruleset that is, once again the opposite of the point of this video.

    • @B.Harrigan
      @B.Harrigan 9 месяцев назад +3

      @@Thebensupremacy What are the rules of SOTY? Have the sickest footage of the year. Ritchie is a hypocrite if that's his message, acting like he doesn't wear the most veiwed part on thrasher as a badge of honor. Which he has every right to. Recognizing someone who kills it in their parts and contributes to skateboarding isn't selling out or going against whatever idealized picture of the counter culture inside skateboarding you have.

    The art and music of skateboarding is what won my heart and soul as a grommet back in the 80's and that is what will keep it alive for me no matter how much my bones ache. Getting this chance to hear Richie's perspective was really great, the art and joy of just taking that "Useless Wooden Toy" and turning it into something a little scary, a little dangerous, and letting that be the conduit for your will is something special. Every skater is an artist if they have the courage to accept themselves, whether you're ollieing up a curb or kicking down the street or spinning on top of a fire hydrant (Remember seeing Natas do that for the first time and realizing that there are no limits?)

    I had seen some of Richie Jackson's skating before, and while everything is light years ahead of anything I have ever done, I gravitated more towards Rodney Mullen, Eric Koston, Daewon Song, etc. But, after watching this, I am DEFINITELY a Richie Jackson fan. I mean, his style is cool, but just his positivity as a person is what won me over. And, his dog. Good dude.

    When Richie talks about the late 90's when skateboarding was still underground, it reminds me of this one time when a bunch of college guys pulled up to a skate spot me and a friend were skating. They got out to jump us (we were 16), and another skater's cousin just happened to be driving by and saw what was about to go down. He just happened to be a gang banger, and he whipped his car in and pulled up between the Frat guys and us, then pulled out a gun and pointd it right in the Frat guy's face, and said, " do we have a problem?"
    Those guys were back in their Jeep and gone in about 4 seconds.
    It's funny to see another side of life where you realize the popular/ conventional people aren't good guys, and you find nobility in "criminals".

    Totally get this guy, I was only talking with my son last night on how skating was unique in the early days because everything was new, you could literally do the simplest things and make them look cool and a true extension of the individual riding it, kids nowadays follow a set of rules set by others as they are too afraid of standing out and being ridiculed and they forget what skating is about which is having fun and being creative.
