Just saw Spyro Gyra here in Clearwater, Florida. Tight band still after all these years, missing Dave Samuels (RIP) it’s not quite the same without the special sound of his marimbas and xylophone.
Memories of my late good friend and ex classmate Charles Muregerera who would come to visit me on those sunny Saturdays and we would spend the day playing vinyl records all day with this one as one of our favorites. Those were the mid-80z and we were young men in our early 20z. RIP Charles.
I grew up listening to Spyro Gyra starting with Morning dance, and buying all of their albums through the 1980s. It's over 40 years later and they still sound fresh, invigorating and relevant. Just hearing these old tracks brings back a flood of memories. I wish i could leave this dark period of time with so much hatred, division and intolerance and go back to those simpler times when all we had were good friends, good memories and great music.
In my opinion Spyro-Gyra is one of the best groups of Smooth-Jazz of the 80s and 90's . Yet it is worth ! Brilliant musicians beginning with Jay Beckenstein and his sax. I´m a Mexican citizen proud of listening to this wonderful music. I was introduced to this music listening to, George Benson and his Lady". Jazz Fan since 1980.
Bought this album when it first came out, I was 12. This track obviously magnificent. Last month my 9 year old started the sax, he loves it. Played him this, with 'Keep practicing son, and maybe one day....' Slight tear in my eye. 😊
Lord. I had t be around the same age. I have been Youtubing several of Spyro Gyra's tunes and it's amazing what the mind forgets. The "sound" just touches my soul, man! My spirit misses great music like this.
"Catch the Sun" came out when I was a Sophomore in high school--and sitting "second chair" in the sax section, playing "second alto". I fell in love with your music, and "ripped" tons of riffs off your albums for Jazz band. Over the next three years, I bought every album you had available--going back for the first two, and then Carnaval, Freetime, Ingognito. Wow. You just keep getting better and better. They all just blew my mind as a young saxophonist, and the bouncy, bright, cool, smooth energy you put out through your music helped me keep my sanity through the turmoils of high school. We won State Jazz Band Champions my Senior Year (I'd finally made it to "First Chair") and your melodies were in my headphones (Remember the Sony Walkman?) on every bus trip the band took, both for Jazz competitions and Marching Band too. Your music kept my heart light, my mind clear, my toes tapping, and my fingers itching to slide over the pearls of my beloved King Marigaux. You were an integral part of my teen-age years, and a fundamental part of my development as a musician--and as a leader in our band organizations. Thanks for the years of inspiration! I wouldn't be the man I am today--strong, confident, sensitive, creative, and positive--without your wonderful melodies...
Had the good fortune of seeing them live..they just blew the roof off.tighter than a clock.no doubt they had played together a long time.some serious musical communication going on.
I bought this record upon its release. It was lost in time. I was overjoyed to recover it on this forum. It has always brought peace on stormy days and unbridled joy on fantastic days. I thank the members of this band. I pray that your lifes received the pleasure and reassurance that you gave me for almost 50 years and whatever I have left.
I was a high school trumpet player in 79 in Texas. I convinced my friends to do a road trip to Austin to see these guys in the old Armadillo, which is gone now. Jay let me play a set with the group. He slapped my back and said good job kid. My jazz band did some Spyro Gyra at the state jazz band competition. The judges were all messed up. What, no Big Band tunes? That was funny. Jay was a fantastic guy. He really encouraged the young people to get out and do their thing.
What! As a high school kid you played alongside Jay Beckenstein? Bro, congratulations!!!!!!! He’s one of my favorites, and no way was i ever good enough to perform at that level. I’m impressed! Great memories, thnx for the story.
I was also in the band in high school :) saw them in Corpus Christi with the photog from the school newspaper. Every time I hear the music I'm right back there. Sorry about your good friend.
Was in highschool, band director wanted to get a jazz band within the marching band. Several of us said let's do it. We started listening to different musicians. This album was one he brought for us. Been hooked ever since.
My mother passed away in January of 2021. It was a Saturday. I woke up and peeped in on her to see if she was still awake, because she was battling dementia, and a few urinary tract infections. That morning, I popped in this CD and went to work, and this song came on, then I get a text to come back home because my mom had passed away, so this song has a lot of meaning to me. I'm so happy that this band came about years ago, and made such a beautiful song, and it compliments my mother. @@Ewerb7 Smooth jazz has been snooZZZe jazz since the late 90s. Pickings are slim for quality modern jazz. Had to hum this in Google to find it!!!! What a track. Summer in the tropics, on a loaded bus, in a loaded town...in a loaded street, wherever it was, it was loaded a fun...afternoons spent in deep chill
Good nostalgia here. I played in my high school jazz/stage band and on into college. But our band director was also a professional sax player... (still is actually).. and he always played with us. We did quite a bit of Spiro Gyra. We were a little ambitious. 😅 We were pretty good, though, and asked to perform at a lot of different places.

Amazing band !! I really thank God for having discovered after so many years bands like this, from this remote place that is Argentina I am a fervent lover of jazz fusion, a shame not to be able to enjoy them live in my country, since I learned that they were here in my country several years ago ...
I have this album on CD. Bought it years ago after I visited my uncle who was and still is a smooth Jazz fanatic. This song and morning dance are one of their best compositions .. my opinion

Had to hum this in Google to find it!!!! What a track. Summer in the tropics, on a loaded bus, in a loaded town...in a loaded street, wherever it was, it was loaded a fun...afternoons spent in deep chill
Great great summer vacation song!!!
Always loved this. So grateful for the posting. Very joyous and uplifting
Brilliant, beautiful, bright morning swing ❤️
Before moving back to the Midwest ...I "caught the sun" in Southern California for 25 years with this part of the soundtrack for my life and times back then.
I listen ro this after a long and stressful day. BEST THERAPY EVER!
Brings back memories, my dad liked these guys
Sound mix is perfect, and that sax too!!
Amazing band !! I really thank God for having discovered after so many years bands like this, from this remote place that is Argentina I am a fervent lover of jazz fusion, a shame not to be able to enjoy them live in my country, since I learned that they were here in my country several years ago ...
Very good melodies! City Kids is my joint! Great band! Jazz is always on time!
I have this album on CD. Bought it years ago after I visited my uncle who was and still is a smooth Jazz fanatic. This song and morning dance are one of their best compositions .. my opinion
Cuando Venezuela era otra, tuve la fortuna y gusto de poder verlos y escucharlos en vivo, en el teatro Altamira, sitio donde también se presentaron Chick Corea, Maynard Ferguson, Irakere y otros tantos más...
This track so sweet yes❤❤❤❤
I'M LUCKY I HAVE 15 OF THEIR ALBUMS SIGNED BY THE BAND MEMBERS TO ME SOME I SHARED ON FACEBOOK AS A TRIBUTE TO THE LEGENDARY GROUP
This song got played quite often on this one radio station in my area back when I was a teenager. I haven't heard it in years, but I knew it was somewhere out there. I'm so glad that I found it here on RUclips.
Obra de Arte!!
