in 1979 having heard nothing but the pop music we were fed, I was walking to work, aged 17 when I heard Morning Dance on a tiny cassette player on the small electric cart the milk delivery guy used - it changed my life At 62 now I have verything they ever did and of course they led me to Grover Washington, Ronnie Laws, and little by little, to Miles Davis, Bill Evans The Brubecks, etc My 28 yr old son continues and enhances the journey - one chance moment and a lifetime of joy Thank God or whoever loves you
It's a summer's night in the mid 1980's We're camping in the Namib Desert. A deep black sky shimmering with the jewels of the great milky way. Onto our 3rd bottle of 1927 KWV Port ... and Spyro Gyra booming over the oldest dunes in the world. Can't get closer to heaven than that.
Namibia? I just watched a YT video today that said the Namibian government plans to kill 100 animals including elephants and hippos and distribute the meat. That's sad.
I can picture your surroundings - GREAT! I had my own Spyro Gyra baptism by fire whilst sitting on top of Mariepskop (Hoedspruit), overlooking the Eastern Transvaal and hearing Morning Dance for the first time, in 1982. The experience etched into my memory for life. Needless to say, I've been a Spyro disciple ever since ...
I have been fortunate enough to have introduced to it by my Dad at the tender age of 6...now it is my memory of him and i carry it forward to my 3 boys...#timeless
The ONLY music to play when you worked as a young sales person in a Hi Fi stereo store in a Houston mall in 1982 called "Sounds Great" ro sell stereo's and speakers (Sharpstown Mall when it was new and not what it is now). If you had to listen to music all day long in a mall, you better be listening to something you like.....
Growing up on the Cape Flats Cape Town South Africa back in the 80 s , i don't there will be a soul not who these guys are . You had to have a cassette in your car with these guys . Fast forward almost living 40 years in Canada, and i still go out of my way to listen to these guys . Cheerz
Discovered them in the 80's. When I got to college I'd open the windows on a rainy evening, load up a couple of their cassettes to decompress...usually with a beverage or two containing hops and barley. Good times!
'Twas in the early 80's when my late dear cousin Butch influenced me to listen to this ace jazz band. Spyro Gyra will always be special to me. Thanks cousin Butch.
I played you guys non stop when I was a kid and thought you’d disappeared. Thank goodness for RUclips. At 60 my life is full of joy again. Total perfection as ever.
I was born in 95 so I had to have been at least 7 when my oldest brother showed me and my other brother The Very Best of Spyro Gyra and was totally blown away. Along with acoustic alchemy they were the reasons I loved to hear jazz.
I was opening with my band for them on a concert in the 80-ies at "Grosse Freiheit" in Hamburg Germany. After my gig we all watched their gig - it was a pure pleasures to hear and see my youth heroes on stage. That put on a great show, also the lighting mixing guy did his best to put in the best light and he knew all the kicks. Afterwards we all went out to have a pizza together. Such a joy to hang out with such nice and friendly colleagues. Thank you Spyro Gyra for all the joy you brought to my life - thank you! Nils Gessinger
Hey Nils , i also love the music of Spyro Gyra. Have almost all albums of Them. I remember that I heard you and Your band in Hamburg . Mönckebergstr. as an opener for the Hyatt hotel (?) or was it the the the galleria?. Must have been in the late 80is or 90is. Great gig too. Opened my mind to contemporary jazz music. So Spyro Gyra, Russ Freeman and the Rippingtons and 4 Play are still my all-time favorites. Stay healthy with greetings from the Elbinsel
I can't say how glad I am that Spyro Gyra is still playin' on after all of these years! I've been a huge fan ever since Morning Dance started playing on the radio. Saw this band live twice. Spyro Gyra's music never gets old!
Skater Jeff me too! I was fortunate to work at Ontario Place as the PR guy for the Park and the amazing Forum from 1980 to 1986. It was a highlight to have Spyro Gyra come and play many years in a row to Toronto from their home in Buffalo. Jay and company, continued success and keep making wonderful music!
Ha ha, Honestly, yes that must be the X factor group, so sad for them do know what there missed 😄 I feel like am back in my Ford Capri, sunroof open, 👍
My late dad and my uncle introduced us a Spyro Gyra as little kids in the late 70's and 80's in South Africa. This video and the 3 songs . . . . . . . . WOW!!!!!!!!! This friggin awesome. I just listened to Dave Grusin & Hugh Masekela. I also listened to Spain by Stevie Wonder.... We were fortunate to have lived this :) I'm 55 years old....
These are superb smooth jazz classics. The difference between today’s smooth jazz and these wonderful compositions is that these are composed pieces of music that have a PROGRESSION and say something- compared to today’s smooth jazz music that is almost always a mind numbing two bar loop repeated infinitely. Great job guys!!❤
What can you say to this Masterpiece? Amazing...... Stupendous...... Phenomenal Fantastic Sublime Wonderful, these words and words like this all fall short I'm sure most would agree. Whoever put this together, Thank you, I'm pretty sure you'll never read this........... What a Killer Band, and Top Notch, Cream of the Crop Musicians, it doesn't get any better. 🎸❤️
We in Toronto, Canada were treated with an annual summertime visit by Spyro Gyra at ONTARIO PLACE FORUM, in the early days. An outdoor, grassy, concert bowl park on Lake Ontario. The players were awesome with great chops, and super entertaining! The percussionist would scissor-kick his symbols with his toe as he leaped in the air. The steel pan, and MARIMBA solos give Morning Dance such a cool, island-earthy vibe. I played it in high school Jazz Band, 1980. Thanks so much! 😀
I can explain WHY it makes you feel that: they're musicians of the highest caliber. a good composition can feel fresh for decades, as this piece shows!
I've struggled with this same emotion - here's my take - no matter what life is throwing at you, this music makes you feel like: 'things are gonna be OK'.
Omg I’m crying now,I remember my papa in heaven he is also a musician and this is his favorite music ever since spyro gyra he taught me also this music so at my age of 40’s I always listen spyro gyra music everytime I drive my car ,I really keep spyro gyra music in my whole life it’s a reminisce my papa in heaven I miss him so much
Thanks to Hector Collazo from Puerto Rico who sent to me 10 minutes ago a link to enjoy Morning Dance !! I invite to every body to enjoy it !! Thanks Spyrogira !!
My uncle always had this on his Hi-Fi, until such a tender age of 9, my equally tender ears developed craving for such exquisite goodness. I introduced the genre to my then gf, and now wife of 5 amazing years, and our relationship is built around music. We explored a lot of jazz and Spyro Gyra tops it, hands down. Now, am father to two amazing kids, they’re hearing these, and my son’s often stoic face lights up when Shaker Song turns up. True music, true art, true love. High power to you!
I believe l was in my mid teens when l hear "Catching The Sun" on the radio. Went down to our local record store at the time and asked if they had the album. Had to explain it was a instrumental type of album. The fellow who ran the store said, " oh, that's more of a big city sound ", we don't carry it. Finally got my hands on the vinyl album a few months later, and still enjoy listening to it today. Carry on Gentleman. 🙂🇨🇦
Nice story! They were my introduction to jazz like 35 years ago. Their music (and others) was played on interludes between cable tv programs back then. Did the same as you and put my hand on a first vinyl... discovered Marcus Miller and Will Lee (I’m a bass player), with led me to Miles, Herbie, Snarky Puppy, world music etc etc etc... thanks Spyro Gyra! The music is still good!
Same here! First heard of them in maybe 1975 Loved that album, Morning Dance I think. Again like you had to order it at my local WH Smith’s. felt v grown up at the time!!
Remember buying Spyro Gyra's first album 40 years ago. Loved the early jams and love everything you guys have done since. Saw you a few times when you played in Upstate, NY, particularly in my hometown of Rochester, NY. Appreciate you guys so much, you're one of the groups that got me hooked on jazz.
Great memories! Back in 1978 I was part of a jazz fusion band in high school. We competed in the Canadian stage band festival in Edmonton. Playing a medley of Spyro Gyra tunes we ended up winning the competition! What an amazing experience...
Emaculate Alto Sax tone.. So warm an bubbly... I grew up south of Buffalo down in Pittsburgh... Jay was def a big influence in my tone and technic on Alto.... #saxgods

They were introduce to me by my older brother, when i was 40"s nd now am 64,still loves to listen to their album..relaxes my brain.Thankyou guys for sharing your talents,/Longlive..
One of the first concerts I took my soon to be wife to. She was all into hard rock and metal (which we both love). I will never forget her expression after the concert 🤯 (we seen them in the round in Anaheim, CA). She was like OMG those guys were so f#$king good I can't believe I've never heard of them! I knew I had a keeper lol. My way of introducing her to different kinds of music 😉. We've been married 27 years now! Love these guys!
Saw these guys back early 80’s as a young trumpet player. So smooth and tight and still keeping it together years later. They ‘make’ music, not just play it. Stay safe all of you.
I’ll never forget the first time I heard Spyro Gyra; very early 80’s, Sony Walkman cassette player, warm early Fall day in John Bryant State Park Ohio, Freetime; my soul was filled for the first time by the sounds that caressed my ears.
They were the way I discovered fusion, in 87. I remember I could not understand anything at first, but I didn't give up, and I cannot be more grateful to them I behaved this way, then discovering and having always loved other masters like uzeb, chick corea and his bands, rippington, yellow jackets, Mike stern, Dave grusin, John patitucci, Vinnie colaiuta and some other tons of music monsters like them I have not the space to write all them. But Spyro were the first and will always have a special place in my heart and my soul. Thank you guys for 40 years of unbeatable music and emotions!!
Absolutely agree 100% Daniele! Spyro Gyra was probably the most important, "gateway" band that I listened to when I was making the transition to loving Fusion and Jazz music. I bought the album, "Morning Dance" on a complete whim without knowing anything about Spyro Gyra or their music and I ended up listening to it non-stop until I bought, "Catching The Sun". There was something about the album cover art that I really liked too. It also took me a little bit of time and persistent listening, but once everything clicked there was no turning back. Been listening to these guys and digging their music since 1979!
Congratulations, 45 years of musical history. You're amazing guys, your style, talent and rithm are fantastic. You have a lot of fans here, in México. Thanks for share your passion with us.
As a child growing up in the 70's, I was introduced to a wide range of music. The very first time I heard morning dance, I was twelve years old and wasn't knowledgeable of music theory at the time, but remember thinking, this song had the absolute best tone I had ever heard. I never knew the name of the song, but the local movie theater would play it before the movie to adjust the sound (pre thx assuming) Flash forward to a week ago when the song came on RUclips and I finally caught the title. Thank you gentlemen for creating a masterpiece in sound unmatched still today and thank you for keeping this song alive. Very nice to come across this social distancing video, I actually teared up listening to this beautiful song medley when you started morning dance 🙏🙏🙏
My dad used to play your songs so much when I was a kid. I honestly didn't understand it at all. 30+ years later, I can see why. It's so damn good. It's funny seeing my music playlist go from japanese black metal, grindcore, breakcore & glitch, into Spyro Gyra and Weather Report lmao.
You're making some of us feel old, ;) I remember first few albums Tom Schuman had an afro... a white guy, lol. He's slendered down and looks more distinguished. Miss the old band mates though. Changes are necessary with time.
Come morning Dance my first Jazz music I listen to since then Jazz has been my food of love that was 1979 I think, Thanks Gentlemen for showing me what loving means with your music .
Tom Schuman is my man. I asked him after a Concert in Germany on which college he studied music. He answered that he never had any lessons but learned playing the keys all by himself... amazing...
Alex Emhardt - This is incredible. My dad's dad, and my dad also learned keyboards by ear, and I blended that with some formal lessons. Tom Schuman is so talented - and worth following. He and Jay are the heart of this band, but backed up by the best talent in all the jazz fusion world. Please check out some of Tom's solo work - you wont be disappointed.
Love you guys... we go way back together..... my 1st girlfriend, job, moving out, falling in love, getting married, nevermind the sunsets, the beaches, the fireside camping, making & having babies😉, yup you guys were there. Truly feel good music.... thank you for all the memories that come to mind, listening to your awesome sound & mighty music..
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!! For the trip down memory lane and for helping us to maintain our sanity during this global pandemic...You have definitely made my work day really enjoyable and allows me to get through the day. REAL MUSIC! REAL MUSICIANS!!
I had the chance to see BST at the Infinity Hall a few years ago and was able to see the band after. I told them thank you for bringing me back to much simpler time in life. I know they understood!! I'm 62 now and they were awesome!!!!
It’s great isn’t it. Music is like that oily water the Alchemists talked about as the first matter. From a basic material a near infinite myriad of forms, and we all bump heads over to make something beautiful.
I've seen these cats three times in concert. Man, they are the best. When this pandemic dies down, I will be the first to get a ticket when they go back on tour.

And I think these ones are in over ankle deep!! 🤣🤣
I been with these guys since "Morning Dance & Shaker Song!" Love their music 💙!
40 years later and it still sounds fresh. REAL talent, REAL musicians, REAL instruments (plus some help!)
What do you mean by "plus some help"? Like pre-recorded?
Rodolfo Saenz I interpreted that as the software instruments and patches used on the aux keys.
Mega ditto!

Saw them at Yoshi's in Oakland, a few months ago, NICE.
So good man. Real music that puts you in a great mood! Thanks fellas and keep doin your thing.
It's been very nice listening to them after a long Time ago.
Jesse... was that at the Celebrity Theater?
In DownTown Anaheim on their POINT OF VIEW TOUR probably 1989??
Go Julio on Catching the sun!
Saw these guys back early 80’s as a young trumpet player. So smooth and tight and still keeping it together years later. They ‘make’ music, not just play it. Stay safe all of you.
I need to see them live!! FL dates, please!!!😍
I’ll never forget the first time I heard Spyro Gyra; very early 80’s, Sony Walkman cassette player, warm early Fall day in John Bryant State Park Ohio, Freetime; my soul was filled for the first time by the sounds that caressed my ears.
It brings back memories when I first started listening to jazz music 😂😁
This is timeless. The thumbs down are those that have no soul for music. Also I can’t blame them, I guess they are all under 10yrs of age . 🇿🇦
Nothin better... Earbuds to brain Cool stuff!
Morning Dance is way up there!
My good man, you have good taste.
And John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell, Jaco Pastorious, Al DeMiola, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa, Paco de Luca, Weather Report...the list is endless...
Outstanding performers, excellent musicians. Thank you for the lovely music you brought. So fortunate to have heard your music.
Spyro gyra is timeless. Every song is timeless, classic.
About 40 years ago I listened to Spyro Gyra n I never regret it. Cos' I'm still listening to them.
Shakers song, reminds me of palm trees, white sand and crystal clear blue water 🌴
My brother introduced me to Spyro back in the late 70's...for that I shall ever be grateful, coz these fellas are awesome! Cheers from NZ.
These are just some of 'jazz fusion's' finest tunes ever.
I never knew the name of the song, but the local movie theater would play it before the movie to adjust the sound (pre thx assuming)
Flash forward to a week ago when the song came on RUclips and I finally caught the title.
Thank you gentlemen for creating a masterpiece in sound unmatched still today and thank you for keeping this song alive. Very nice to come across this social distancing video, I actually teared up listening to this beautiful song medley when you started morning dance 🙏🙏🙏
Music to wake up to.🎉
I approve of a 5 star rating for this band 👍
My dad used to play your songs so much when I was a kid. I honestly didn't understand it at all.
30+ years later, I can see why. It's so damn good.
It's funny seeing my music playlist go from japanese black metal, grindcore, breakcore & glitch, into Spyro Gyra and Weather Report lmao.
From metal to smooth jazz, eh? Well, who says you have to exclude either...

You're making some of us feel old, ;) I remember first few albums Tom Schuman had an afro... a white guy, lol. He's slendered down and looks more distinguished. Miss the old band mates though. Changes are necessary with time.
Still as incredible as it was yesterday!
Great music!
The world needs more musicicas like you
Spyro Gyra, a great band! ♪ ♫
Wow! I am glad to be reconnected with your sounds after all these years
I grew up listening to and LOVING this music
Very Cool then and now. Thank you!!
Come morning Dance my first Jazz music I listen to since then Jazz has been my food of love that was 1979 I think, Thanks Gentlemen for showing me what loving means with your music .
This track is One of the Reason Why im hooked to JAZZ ever Since!
Me Too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
🤭🤭 good then. They are really amazing. Being constant throughout the time is not for everyone. There's none one of their tracks that i don't like.
Tom Schuman is my man.
I asked him after a Concert in Germany on which college he studied music. He answered that he never had any lessons but learned playing the keys all by himself... amazing...
Here in the Philippines
We call that
Uwido
Catching the tune all by himself/herself
Without any formal training
@@anthonyb.corrales4470 English equivalent is autodidact.
Great then, great now. Love you guys.
First introduced in high school. 1973 graduate. I hear you loud and clear....magic
Thanks for the memories: my husband was a musician and he introduced me to them, RIP Babe!
Prayers.
Im sorry
Wow !
In the Zone..
Love, love this song 🎵 ❤
This music really made my day, feeling kind of blue because of a huge loss. Great memories. Thanks and God Bless.
Amazing musicians, emotional harmonies , wonderful people, great guy's ... never missed a show in Holland!
I've seen these cats three times in concert. Man, they are the best. When this pandemic dies down, I will be the first to get a ticket when they go back on tour.
I love tropical jazz , they where on the radio with morning dance (1980-Netherlands) , thanks for sharing this !!
Reminds me of going by one of the UNT lab bands practicing .
