Yes, this is the craziest group i've ever listened to. These guys are... bad? Bad to the bone! Yes MIke I asked myself, the same question, "how can they be this good?" But then, when you look at the video and see the arrangements and placements of respective musicians and singers. The whole music so smooth and balanced, so soothing sounds and I still believe, these guys well, this group is a real crazy group!!! You just can't help but love them!!!!
Trying to get my head around Russian musicians playing classic American songs from the 70s so superbly, faithfully - and improved to boot, given modern digital recording capability - as they ALWAYS nail the American English vocals. It's uncanny. It's beguiling. This Steely Dan song and the Superstar Carpenters cover where Ksenia Buzina has a voice that is right there comparable to Karen Carpenter, are my two favorite - because of the excellence of the vocals in addition to the excellence of the arrangement and of the instruments playing. Their vocals are always spot on in the songs they cover, but these are my two favs.

Some recent American "Country" songs have made a big deal singing about how much better Small Towns are than Big Cities, claiming it's only about community spirit etc. etc. (which is bullshit) In my opinion Leonid and his Friends are TRULY singing about community on a World Wide sense. As a musician, I have a very high standard for people doing covers of classic songs from the past. But I must say, this cover version was so good and so extraordinary, I had to turn it up, listen to it twice, and ignore my cup of coffee (temporarily - LoL!). This is truly the best cover version of any song by anybody I have ever heard - hands down! The nuance, counterpoints, signature key changes, musicianship, lead and backup vocals, etc., are all spot on! I am truly blown away, and as someone else said below, Maurice White(RIP) must be smiling from above on Leonid & Friends!! Stunning! Just stunning! Yes, David Foster has always said this is the best song he ever wrote, because of all the musical qualities you mention. When he got together with Jay Graydon and Bill Champlin, (who of course played with Chicago for many years) magic was made. With Champlin's and Graydons' lyrics and Foster's music it was bound to be stellar. Ironically Maurice White had nothing to do with this song creatively and yet it was one of EW&F's biggest hits, and remains so to this day.
STUNNED....My dad was a recording engineer back in the 70's - 80's and I got to sit in on E.W.F. recording sessions, and I well remember this song being recorded for their album. I truly cannot believe just how incredible this rendition is.... Brought back some wonderful memories.... Thank you so much....
What amazes me is that this song is perfomed by Russians /Ukrainians who obviously, English isnt their first language. Nevertheless they captured every note, every nuances and the "Feel" of the song ever Faithfully. Excellent indeed !

Igor was hitting those drums like a boss, and everyone left the stage during "I'm a Man" for him to do a 10-minute solo. My recommendation is that you find a city near you where they're playing and go see them.

You should hear Ksenia's version of "Superstar." Karen Carpenter would have been very proud. I heard that Ksenia and Richard Carpenter know each other and that he liked her version of the song. I lost my wife Beth a year ago this past June, and when I hear Ksenia sing "Superstar," I absolutely go to pieces. It makes me realize that we who have lost someone very special how lucky we were to have them and still have them (In a different form from when we knew them) in our lives. Ksenia seems like she is a very nice person as well as a very talented performer. If there is a man in her life, I hope he realizes how blessed he is to have her and cherishes what he has in her.

Brilliant, and I've heard a lot of other brilliant covers as well. Esp. the ones with Phillip Bailey singing so I can disagree! But this version is amazing also.
To cover the great voices of Maurice White & Philip Bailey wasn’t enough. It’s to mimic the famous Phenix Horn Section is unheard of…and yet y’all make it look like child’s play!! ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT!!!
Considering they also had to learn to sing in an American accent to come so close to the original voices of EW&F is incredible. I have heard both American and British covers of this and this group still can stand shoulder to shoulder with that great 70’s sound.

@@tonyruggi6286 I have tickets to see them in June and am psyched. As a visual artist I have always been confused about the differences between art and music. If an artist copies a famous work it's considered a lesser thing even if it masterful. Which never seemed quite fair to me. Rock cover bands are generally considered lesser, as bands not creative or talented enough to be original. Leonid & Friends are a technical juggernaut in recreating these classic songs but the joy they express in playing and their palpable love of the music makes it a homage to the originals AND to the joy of performing together.

They not only nail every cover musically, but they bring all the energy and verve the music requires. None of the tunes they cover are easy, either. Very sophisticated, intricately structured songs. This group never misses.
As an American, I get such a kick out of watching these performances and then hearing the band members immediately speaking in Russian after the song (not so much in this one… check others). You all sing flawless American-English. It is truly awesome!

I saw this group last week in Cleveland. What a powerhouse performance! They played and sang wickedly difficult music with a level of musicianship that was astonishing. The other thing coming off the stage was the pure joy they felt for the music the audience and the fact that they were Russians in America performing American music for appreciative American audiences. The love for great music is a strong love! Don't miss them the harmonies alone were worth the ticket price. I wanted to ask the band to back it up so I could listen to the harmonies in iso. Slamming these folks as a cover band Is exactly like calling the the Cleveland Orchestra "just some Beethoven cover band from East Cleveland".

This isn't done in one take, it's highly polished to where some would call it "over produced", but when one is looking for perfection this is how it's done. It's highly unlikely the Saxophonist got the solo on first recording, it's possible that the solo could be pieced together from different attempts. I am not insulting, some believe that Steely Dan is over produced and they're likely my favorite band. This cover of EW&F, is mind blowing excellent and I loved it. Cheers
@@moondawg3693 Their live recorded performances appear to often be just as good. They aren't set up as well to get the levels all exactly right, but the playing and singing definitely sounds right on target. Lots of rehearsals and attention to detail can do that. While most performers can't duplicate their studio perfection when performing live, the ones who can, reveal just how great they are. I know a lot of people LIKE hearing alternate takes, with wild solos stuck in, making the songs different versions with altered notes and timing and such, but I grew up with just radio and records, and fell in love with those songs played that way. So when I go to concerts and hear what would be considered altered versions which would have obviously not been up to quality of being good enough to record for posterity and sell, by the artist themselves, it's a disappointment. These folks are the real deal, and give us close to perfection performances. They're that good. At least from a non musician's ear, anyway.

I agree, this most likely wasn’t recorded in one take, but rest assured, these are top notch musicians and performers.

Super fantastic... You never fail to impress! I haven't heard that song in decades. When I was a teenager, this song was on top of the music charts. I took it for granted then...so many good bands and songs from that era. That's when musicians were truly great. You give me hope for the future of music at a time when everything is synthetic... you bring the real deal.

This is the Best cover band I've ever heard. They did an outstanding job with this EWF song. Their Chicago cover songs are also World-Class performances. 👍

My recommendation is that you find a city near you where they're playing and go see them.

You should hear Ksenia's version of "Superstar." Karen Carpenter would have been very proud. I heard that Ksenia and Richard Carpenter know each other and that he liked her version of the song. I lost my wife Beth a year ago this past June, and when I hear Ksenia sing "Superstar," I absolutely go to pieces. It makes me realize that we who have lost someone very special how lucky we were to have them and still have them (In a different form from when we knew them) in our lives.
Ksenia seems like she is a very nice person as well as a very talented performer. If there is a man in her life, I hope he realizes how blessed he is to have her and cherishes what he has in her.

To cover the great voices of Maurice White & Philip Bailey wasn’t enough. It’s to mimic the famous Phenix Horn Section is unheard of…and yet y’all make it look like child’s play!! ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT!!!
Considering they also had to learn to sing in an American accent to come so close to the original voices of EW&F is incredible. I have heard both American and British covers of this and this group still can stand shoulder to shoulder with that great 70’s sound.

My wife and I were fortunate to see them in norwalk CT last year. There are not enough superlatives. The best part is how much they love what they are doing.
@@tonyruggi6286 I have tickets to see them in June and am psyched. As a visual artist I have always been confused about the differences between art and music. If an artist copies a famous work it's considered a lesser thing even if it masterful. Which never seemed quite fair to me. Rock cover bands are generally considered lesser, as bands not creative or talented enough to be original. Leonid & Friends are a technical juggernaut in recreating these classic songs but the joy they express in playing and their palpable love of the music makes it a homage to the originals AND to the joy of performing together.

As an American, I get such a kick out of watching these performances and then hearing the band members immediately speaking in Russian after the song (not so much in this one… check others). You all sing flawless American-English. It is truly awesome!

How true that is, Joe. It's like an entire genre just vanished. Very sad. I'm 67 now and spend most of my music time listening to cover artists bringing back the music of my younger days.
I saw this group last week in Cleveland. What a powerhouse performance! They played and sang wickedly difficult music with a level of musicianship that was astonishing. The other thing coming off the stage was the pure joy they felt for the music the audience and the fact that they were Russians in America performing American music for appreciative American audiences. The love for great music is a strong love! Don't miss them the harmonies alone were worth the ticket price. I wanted to ask the band to back it up so I could listen to the harmonies in iso. Slamming these folks as a cover band Is exactly like calling the the Cleveland Orchestra "just some Beethoven cover band from East Cleveland".

This isn't done in one take, it's highly polished to where some would call it "over produced", but when one is looking for perfection this is how it's done.
It's highly unlikely the Saxophonist got the solo on first recording, it's possible that the solo could be pieced together from different attempts.
I am not insulting, some believe that Steely Dan is over produced and they're likely my favorite band.
This cover of EW&F, is mind blowing excellent and I loved it.

@@moondawg3693 Their live recorded performances appear to often be just as good. They aren't set up as well to get the levels all exactly right, but the playing and singing definitely sounds right on target. Lots of rehearsals and attention to detail can do that. While most performers can't duplicate their studio perfection when performing live, the ones who can, reveal just how great they are. I know a lot of people LIKE hearing alternate takes, with wild solos stuck in, making the songs different versions with altered notes and timing and such, but I grew up with just radio and records, and fell in love with those songs played that way. So when I go to concerts and hear what would be considered altered versions which would have obviously not been up to quality of being good enough to record for posterity and sell, by the artist themselves, it's a disappointment. These folks are the real deal, and give us close to perfection performances. They're that good. At least from a non musician's ear, anyway.

I agree, this most likely wasn’t recorded in one take, but rest assured, these are top notch musicians and performers.

Super fantastic... You never fail to impress! I haven't heard that song in decades. When I was a teenager, this song was on top of the music charts. I took it for granted then...so many good bands and songs from that era. That's when musicians were truly great. You give me hope for the future of music at a time when everything is synthetic... you bring the real deal.
