CO4x4RNR Reopens Hamlin Gulch - Recovers Stranded F150 For Local Vet 6.8.2024

CO4x4RNR is happy to announce the successful recovery of a stranded F150 which had been stuck on Hamlin Gulch for the past several months. On June 8th, a team of seven organization volunteers worked through most of the day to pull the vehicle back uphill and onto the trail. The vehicle was stuck on a steep hill with loose rock on the side of the trail and boulders obstructing the extraction. In addition to limited anchor points the recovery was made more difficult due to vandalism the vehicle suffered including slashed tires and broken windows. After careful consideration of the terrain, vehicle position, and potential techniques, the team decided to utilize a modified triangle pendulum pull anchored to one of the few trees available. As the primary winching vehicle pulled the front of the vehicle forward the pendulum guided the vehicle back up on trail while stabilizing it from further sliding downhill. In addition, the vehicle was slightly lifted in the rear with a Hi-Lift jack to overcome obstruction by the large rocks it had become lodged on top of. After careful positioning back on trail, the team replaced the flattened tires, jump started the vehicle, and proceeded to continue up the trail to exit while avoiding the original obstacle. Unfortunately, the vehicle could not remain running and the team proceeded to flat tow the truck the rest of the way out of the trail and back onto paved roads where it was delivered to the owner’s representative. The overall recovery from meetup to delivery of the vehicle lasted about nine hours and the team was glad the weather cooperated and held back the rain until the end of the day. We are proud to have safely recovered this vehicle and cleared the Hamlin Gulch trail.
