Ford 4000 ; Utility tractor ; Built in Highland Park, Michigan, USA ; Original price was $3,500 in 1975 ; The three-cylinder Ford 4000 series ... Great little tractors.
Dad had a 1966 4000 gas with the split grille like that one, the newer models had the one piece grille. That tractor looks very similar if not identical to ours. Our experience was that it was a good dependable tractor and from what I've read and heard that's the general reputation of those old 2000-3000-4000 3 cyl Fords.
That were thousands of the 3 cyl Fords in the SE US and many are still working. The 3 cyl engine had a unique sound, and was very economical to run and maintain. It does not require the cost of additional balancing like a 4 cyl engine. There are a number of great videos on this platform that will explain engine balancing if you are interested. The 4000 has power steering and a remote valve and with a little love and a few dollars would make a great utility tractor for someone.
Odd-number cylinder engines are usually naturally balanced. My guess is that the crank is not a flat plane crank but a triangle looking from the end. Wish it would follow me home.
Speaking of the 3 vs 4 cylinder engines, when I was a youngster Dad baled all the hay with a small square New Holland Hayliner. We ran Massey Ferguson 35 with a 3 cyl Perkins and a 65 with a 4cyl Perkins. the 35 was smoother to operate with less vibration however when running the baler with the 35 if the hay started to dampen slightly the 3 cyl would start to break the baler flywheel shear bolt, if this began to happen more frequently we would put the 4 cyl on the baler in the same conditions and would not break any shear bolts. Even though the operator could feel the vibration on the 4 cyl there must have been some resonance down the 3 cyl PTO shaft which caused the problem. It was something that was discussed from time to time but nothing ever really looked at!
Sheesh Ross, I'm special today, I managed to close the window 3 times before I finished watching the video. I'm glad you have luck timing engines like that, I had trouble getting my 560 to tdc when I was setting the valves.
You're not a moron, comedian is more like it, lol. You're full of jokes and that's a good thing. Have a great day and I'll see you in the next one. Lol
We had several Fords over the years. They have been good to us. I had a Ford 4000 but Diesel like that tractor. It was a good machine but the 3 cylinder Diesel is a little noisy. I prefer the Perkins in our MF 165 Diesel. Your right about the 4 cylinders not being as well balanced but they are quieter and seem to have more power. I know the Perkins in my MF 255 was supposed to be better balanced. I could not tell much difference between the two.
Deere used a counter balance shaft in some of the 4 cylinder engine, and that was a weak spot on some of them, but the 3 and 6 cylinders didn’t have them.
You can use the timing light but usually the tape is on the fly wheel and you have to look through an inspection hole. Sadly most of the times the tape has fallen off
My dad bought that exact same model. It kept acting like it was starving for fuel, but not all the time. Carb was good. Turned out that I found a screwdriver in the fuel tank rolling around. Every once in a while it would block fuel from leaving the tank!
Thanks for the video buddy, my brother in law just gave me one of these ford 4000. Doesn't start, it turns over similar to this one. Pto lever is snapped off of it and can't shut the pto off. Any helpful suggestions. Your biggest fan.
I worked for a Ford Main Dealer here in the UK in the mid to late 60's. Working on Pre Ford Force, like yours or the later Ford Force, different front grill. As an apprentice you learn odd things, I'm coming in to my 70's now and still recall the part number for your oil filter.CFPN6731A
Another one brought back to life (sort of) !!! Based on my past experience operating a 4000 SU bil and his Dad had...you had to choke the snot out of it on a 90 degree day.
We will work together, and continue to work together, to address these issues, to tackle these challenges, and to work together as we continue to work operating from the new norms, rules, and agreements, that we will convene to work together…We will work together
And when the forces of the issues consolidate into rules of the world, we have a good thing to do. We are going strong for the past maybe I should have a good time. Work is the best way to get the pump up and see what happens.
Ross, usually the dipstick for trans/hydraulic on Fords is left side below the seat. Almost down on the foot rest just in front of the axle housing. Many models Ford did go back to the plug style, that is if my memory is serving me correctly. Cheers :)
Wow didn't know there was a petrol 4000, I believe the last petrol tractors over here were Mf 35 in the UK. I've only seen diesel Fords , Majors and they came out in 52 I believe , thanks for sharing 💨💨👍
Great video ! My neighbour has one of these , he said you have to rock it to start it but it's not the starter it's the ignition or something. I think I'll go have a look at it 😂
Those little 3.1L 3 bangers a real PITA ive worked on a few and they are my least favorite i avoid them like the plague. Whats weird is even the gas version is only rated to 2200 rpm My Yanmar spins harder than that lol
I learn a lot about what can be wrong with engines from watching your videos. (Don't let that go to your head, though 🤣🤣🤣🤣) Sometimes it's something fairly simple that causes lots of problems.
Ross is old ford tractor from 70's, early 80's maybe made in Europe engineers designed was very bad think 😢 drive man 🤪 to get this fixed good luck thanks for laugh, great video's keep up good work.
@@bp-eu6sh wrong. I have no idea what was done to that tractor before I got there. I was told they tried to get it running before the sale but they couldn’t.
Awesome thank you for the video

great job on the little ford tractor thank you for taking us along

Thanks Jeff! It went relatively simply

I think it was a solid little tractor. With a little work it will really be something
Transmission plug is on right said of case. That pipe plug is it you mention
Thanks! I thought that was the case
Hi Ross the big plugs onto are the fill plugs the level plugs are the square plugs other sides.
Thanks Clayton!

I’m sure this one could be bought for the right price 🤣 thanks Gary!
Good ole tractors. Spent many hours on them throughout the years.
Thanks for watching Travis!
@@rosstheoliverman no problem man. Great video.
Hi Ross it's Clayton Hawn if you remember I used to work on these all the . There not bad when you get used to them.
Just takes getting used to I guess
Could those deep set spark plugs be there because it might be the same basic casting as the diesel head and those are needed for the injectors?
I’m not sure on that!
😁Great Job . Needs TLC . MY ford has a dipstick on the filler . some have it on the PTO shift cover. Depends on the year it was made. thanks
Thanks Thomas!

Their is a aluminum cap in front of the shifter it has a stick on it i have a 5000 ford diesel standard shift
I figured that might be the case. I’ll pass it on to him. Thanks Mike!

You can tell which way any distributor turns by looking at the vacuum advance canister.
Thanks!

No strangely enough 3 cylinders are more balanced and don’t need the dampener. Seems odd but true.
@@rosstheoliverman my current Deere has a 3 cylinder, and it does run smooth, little to no vibration.
For the ignition mechanical timing, do you use a timing light with the engine balancer just like on other automotive applications?.

Great video Ross. Another job well done! Really enjoy the videos!
Thanks Scott!
Ross you need a By Yourself Startomatic 9000 from VGG 😅😅
🤣🤣🤣 A viewer sent me one of those triggers and I just didn’t bring it along. I didn’t think I’d need it for what I was doing
You should try doing that with a loader on. 😞
Loaders make any repair much more sadness 😭😭😭

We had one in Missouri south of KC. About a 1967. Seemed mostly gas engines in the sub-50 hp range in that area back then. Ours ran great.
Love the videos Ross. Very interesting and relaxing to watch everyday.

My cousin sbf has a ford 4000 , i could ask him how to check transmission and or hydraulic fluid?
I think if he would just buy a book he probably could figure it out I don’t know what his plans are on keeping it
