  • When Paul left Corinth, he had given them a number of traditions to observe which were common to all the churches of the day.
One tradition was the matter of head coverings.
The practice was simple; men were to pray and prophecy without a head covering, women were to pray and prophecy with a head covering, such as a shawl.
This was a physical practice to reflect a spiritual principle, that God was in authority over the man, the husband was in authority over his wife and church worship is to reflect and respect that order.
Paul then provides five supporting arguments why this practice and principle was to be observed.
The question then arises, does this practice and principle still apply today?
Certainly the principle is elsewhere stated in Scripture, but the practice is only stated here, does that mean it can be dismissed?
Do Paul’s argument find their root in cultural practice only, or are the arguments trans-cultural in nature?
A sobering look at a difficult passage, that requires sombre reflection.
The eighteenth sermon in a series by Pastor Matthew Hobbs.
Teaching delivered on Monday 10th June 2024.
