  • Are our lives marked by self-interest or self-restraint?
In the church, are we serving ourselves, or being a servant to others?
In society, are we known by our Christian conduct or are we just another part of the group?
The Christian should be distinct and set apart, living a life modelled on Christ who laid aside all His rights and interests to put others first.
Such a life is hard and was not clearly seen among the Corinthians, who struggled especially with love for each other.
Paul seizes on the topic of food sacrificed to idols to highlight the character faults within the believers of Corinth, that the greater issue is not what goes into them but what comes out of them.
    And yet, the issue remains:
Should a believer eat food sacrificed to idols, in the pagan temples?
Can a believer go to an unbeliever’s house for a meal?
Should Christians really be buying and eating Halal meat?
As we journey back to a first century church and consult Paul’s counsel to them, we find counsel that is surprisingly relevant to the modern church today.
The seventeenth sermon in a series by Pastor Matthew Hobbs.
Teaching delivered on Monday 27th May 2024.
