  • The Peaky Blinders is a BBC Historical Drama series semi-based on a gang of the same name active on Birmingham's racecourses and streets in the late 1890's, although the Shelby brothers on our screens inhabit the world of the 1920's Black Country. During their various adventures and exploits they make contact with IRA gunmen, helping their comrades back in Ireland who at this time were fighting the British in the Irish War of Independence from 1919 to 1922, Communists from the newly established USSR who were helped by Socialist factory workers yet opposed by royalist White Russians or Russian Emigrés in exile. Even the domestic politics of the time with a whole host of gangs based on ethnic and class lines is fascinating and features Italian Mafia from London and New York, Jewish "bakers" and armies of roving gypsies. In this video I'm going to be discussing all of that and more!
    I would highly recommend watching these videos by History West Midlands featuring historian Carl Chinn who specialises and has written a book about Birmingham street gangs in the late 19th and early 20th century.

    I remember in the 1980s there was a little old man who I’d see regularly shuffling alongside a busy road. When it rained he would walk out into the traffic and start filling a carrier bag with water from puddles in the middle road and pouring it into the gutter. I asked somebody who knew him why he did it and was told that it was his shell shock from the 1st World War, he still thought he was in the trenches and was trying to stop it from flooding. He looked in his 80s, so it seemed feasible. Quite sad really.

    I also forgot to mention that the theme song called Red Right Hand, links in perfectly because the "tall handsome man whose red right hand is hidden in his coat" is first Campbell and then Hughes as they're both Protestants from Northern Ireland i.e from Ulster, the traditional symbol of which was the red hand and can still be seen on their flag today. Some extra trivia there ;)

    • @antseanbheanbocht4993
      @antseanbheanbocht4993 6 лет назад +23

      History With Hilbert The Red hand is an ancient Gaelic symbol of the O Neil's of Tir Eoghan from which the county Tyrone of today gets its name , it means Owens land , Owen /Eoghan was a son of Niall of the nine hostages, he carved out this piece of territory for himself . Irish Clans also had their own particular battle cry, the battle cry of the O Neil's was Lamh dearg Abu / Red hand to victory.
      I've heard two versions of the red hands origins, one about a cheifs two sons having a race to an island in a lake, first to touch land succeeds his father as chief, the son losing the race cut off his own hand and threw it on to the island before the other could reach it, thereby winning the race and succeeding his father.
      The Other is of a great king (Lugh) who lost his hand in battle, you must be without physical blemish to be a king in Gaelic Ireland so he had to step aside, but he ruled so well that his kinsmen made him a metal hand so he could continue to rule. This sort invalidate s the first story but they are good stories none the less. Very enjoyable as usual Hilbert, I've just started watching peaky blinders myself.

      History With Hilbert I hope you read my other replies sorry if you read this or any of my other replies and it was abit of an attack but your video was plainfully completly wrong in terms of the history of the gang..
      It was for an example funny enough Billy Kimber who actually ran the teenage street gang known as the peaky blinders after going up the ranks before forming the much larger and more successful interms of money made the Brummagem Boys who the show peaky blinders based the show on and who ran middle and much of norther englands illegal horse racing fixed bets.. There is no record of him Thomas Shelby who ever he was because there is no record of a Thomas Shelby running the little street gang of the name the peaky blinders ever killing Billy Kimber which the show falsely depicts altho its good atleast it puts my city of Birmingham more on the map..

      "Some people in Ireland didn't like the British", "Fenians being a dark age concept of bandits" etc...More like it is human nature to resent being oppressed, so more than "some" had an issue with British occupation of Ireland, and Fenian goes back to ancient Ireland, and it is not linked with 'bandits' but Warriors...and they did not "go off an pillage people" (people? like their own people? Makes no sense what so ever)...Try looking at the british army if you want to point the finger at criminal behaviour in Ireland, you won't have to make shit up, in FACT you'll be spoiled for choice...AND Ireland is one country with 6 counties occupied by a foreign force, note how it is only when Ireland is occupied you get the violence? See a pattern here? Military forces, violence, sectarianism, currency and flags does not mean you have a right to the land, it only means your presence there is forced, ie no indigenous natural right...You need to be way more objective & informed with your "history" hilbert...

    I'm part Roma (gypsy) and I can tell you blood feud between clans are still very real and marriage is infact one of the very few solutions to stop a blood feud and well my family isn't traditionalist nor care for the clans but if you are a traditionalist you are expected to join in a blood feud if it happens to protect your clans honor.

    • @Mythodiir
      @Mythodiir 6 лет назад +19

      Vx Good to hear not all Roma are traditionalists. There's nothing wrong with the Roma's ethnicity, but the culture is toxic and I believe rooted in a medieval code of honour when their ancestors made a living as thieves and prostitutes. They were a rather unfortunate diaspora because they stuck out in Europe like a sore thumb, so they became very insular, almost incestuous, and developed a dalit-like position for themselves in Europe.
      In fact, the main theory is the Roma themselves are Dalits, and were expelled from Northern India (including modern day Pakistan) during a harsh famine, when the Brahmin decided to expell the lowest segment of society from the realm so there would be more food for everybody else.
      It's not confirmed, but the entire "Gypsy" culture could stem from the caste system in India where the 'untouchable' Dalit class was regarded without dignity and forced to suffer at the lowest stations in society. That's a scarred culture, where you lose self-respect and embrace a slave mentality. I guess that's what prolonged subjigation and exclusion does to the human spirit.

      Blah B it's a shame of what has happened to you personally but I think at the end of your comment I need to clarify something not all Roma (gypsie people) have same traditions like for example the kind part of my family belongs to see it as beneath them to beg most of the ones you see sit outside begging are Ashkali, Bashaldé or Lovari. Also you contradict yourself when you say far too few care about the blood feuds its within the same part of honor culture that calls for violence against anyone you see as dissrespecting you while then telling your personal story. I personally agree with Myth that Roma culture no matter what group or clan you belong to is cancer.

      I'd like to clarify the facts raised by the comments made, regarding Irish Travellers, English Gypsies and Roma people.
      I am half Romany Gypsy and half Gorger (Non Gypsy) and Irish Travellers have definitely married into my family.
      ALL 3 of these Ethnic Minority Groups are separate, and have their own traditions, language and history. The English Gypsies were recognised in English Law as an Ethnic Minority Group in 1989. The Irish Travellers were recognised in English Law as an Ethnic Minority Group in 2000.
      It is unlawful to discriminate against these Ethnic Minority Groups the same way it is unlawful to discriminate against any other Ethnic Minority such as Black people, Jewish people, Asian people etc. These Legal Rights have been very hard won and are frequently proving to be made unavailable or impotent in the Court System, ONLY when Irish Travellers and English Gypsies themselves, their Solicitors and Supporting Authorities try to implement them on their behalf; exactly in the same way they are used with effect for other Ethnic Minority Groups.
      I make no attempt to excuse any crime or infraction of Law, neither do I accept that anyone is automatically guilty of a crime just because they belong to an Ethnic Minority Group. However, I do agree through personal experience that feuds do still exist and can generate great violence and hatred, that spans many generations and family members from both sides. This has been a part of Irish Traveller and English Gypsy culture for hundreds of years, and when an entire people rarely have any recourse or protection from the Law, they continue to attempt to find justice or resolution the only way they know! I believe that this "Lawless" situation will not change and "Integration" into society will not be successful, until the Law becomes available for their use and protection and Education is made available as equal students. I believe that the Government and Authorities are very aware of this, and make sure that these essential life improving Rights and skills, continue to be denied.
      Irish Travellers and English Gypsies have maintained an insular life style for centuries from Gorger (Non Gypsy) people. However, marriages between Travellers and Gypsies did occur in the past and are now commonplace. Obviously, marriages to Gorgers did occur, but were not popular or frequent but this is not now the accepted situation. Often, both sets of ancestors are respected and traditions are continued and the language spoken can be interspersed with words or phrases from either people. I have received an education and it is only now that people as a whole, are realising just how isolated they are and it is NOT always by choice. Kushty Bok.

      Good post Rose really good clarification. I should perhaps clarify that I am part Kalé or as it would be said in our dialect of Roma Kàlo and we don't even speak the same language as the Irish Travlers and English Roma. Its more of a mix of Roma and Finnish. And it is true its not often don't have a choice be it because we are hated or because our elders force us to comply with the culture that is unfortunally very toxic.

    The best series on TV. I’m from an area near Birmingham called Wolverhampton, another area of the Black Country and I always heard stories of the Peaky Blinders before the show was even released through family members as I love history myself and am currently studying A-level. The show is very very accurate when you properly look into it and gives a great impression of 1920’s Black Country life. Can’t wait for series 5! #ByOrderOfThePeakyBlinders

    The Black and Tans weren't mostly Scottish. They were mostly former veterans of WW1 who came back from France. They were called the Black and Tans because of the mixture of police and army uniforms. Terrible idea to send them over as they fought like they were still in France and committed atrocities against civilians.

They mostly fucked around drinking causing trouble and what not. Most were the lowest of the low scum, dishonourable discharged etc etc. and used the Irish as a means to take out there frustration. My maternal great great grandfather was Irish from Dublin he was born in Ireland in 1896. He joined the British army in 1915. He served at the Somme he was injured in 1917. He returned to Ireland in 1917 in 1920 his home was burnt down by the Black and Tans. And one of his kids was shot dead in the street running from them. His mother was also nearly killed by a British soldier but the soldiers missed. He served in the Irish Civil war on the Government side. I do know that some of his brothers served in the IRA.

If they are capable of firing a machine gun into a crowd and shooting dead an unarmed man in public (and that's just Bloody Sunday, saying nothing of the city they burned down) I can well believe that they could kill a child even if it was only an isolated incident.

      +Kekistani nationalist First of all, if this mans relatives are still complaining about it, then Irish people are still complaining about it. Its not like we gather together every year and formally give out to Britain about what was inflicted on us. Also with regards to Bloody Sunday : Why would you drive an armoured car into a civilian area provocatively?They were suspicious that members of The Squad were hiding in Croke Park because the biggest event in Ireland was under way and they attempted to smoke them out. They opened fire because they were suspicious of there being gun men in the crowd not because they were shot at initially. Still also not an excuse for what they did to Hogan either.

      CaliburnCelt on my fathers side we have German ancestry. My geart great grandfather was born in London in 1890 his mother and father were both Germans. He served in the British army from 1914 to 1918. Even though he served Britain and was injured by getting shot in the face in September 1918 he was still looked down apon just because his mother and father was German. Also during the war he and many other German Britain’s had to change their names as he would have been put in jail. His name was Ernest George Von Ehren.

    Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania had all been part of Russia (not Prussia) before WW I, although the nobles of Estonia and Latvia were German-speaking 'Baltic Barons' descended from Teutonic Knights who had turned Protestant in the 16th c. and founded families. In the anarchy that followed the Russian Revolution 'Free Companies' of German veterans went there to support the Whites against the Reds; and when those withdrew, the nationalists took over and proclaimed independence for those countries.

    "Before the Easter Rising most people in Ireland didn't hate the British" This is untrue. Most Irish did hate the British and did not want to be part of Britain, but most were trying to do so through peaceful means such as the Home Rule Party/ Irish Parliamentary Party who won 93/103 seats in Parliament. The way the Irish were treated over the centuries left a very bitter taste and we wanted to control our own destiny, even if until Cosgrave in the 60's we were badly led, At least we were led by our own.

      I agree, I would argue the majority of the population detested English rule, but like you said they were trying to enact separation by peaceful means, so much to the point thousands of Irish nationals joined the British war effort as an act of goodwill towards gaining a sovereign status. Unfortunately this caused the split between Redmond’s Volunteers initially. Some stayed to defend the Country and others fought in Irish regiments at Gallipoli and the Somme.

    Before I bash a glaring historical innacuracy in this show, I'll just say that overall, I like it a lot. But I really can't stand how the show conflates Irish travellers with the Roma people under the umbrella term "Gypsy". The Shelbies are clearly meant to be Irish travellers who grew up in England, but there's a bunch of stuff in there about them being Roma, even though the Roma aren't white in the slightest. Irish travellers and the Roma are two completely different ethnic groups, and the fact that they're treated as the same thing because they're both derogatorily called "Gypsies" demonstrates a gross lack of historical knowledge of the time period, and is an inaccuracy I'm surprised Hilbert didn't point out. And to top it all off, when the Shelbies speak the Roma language, (even though they should be speaking Shelta, the language of the Irish travellers), they are actually speaking Romanian, a completely different language to Roma. 🤦‍♂️

      @@christopherbrice5473 I suppose that's a decent head canon, but the creators of the show clearly still have no idea what they're doing in regards to these two completely disparate groups of people. It's obvious that they're conflating Roma people and Irish travellers into some Frankenstein ethnic group that doesn't exist, which really rubs me the wrong way because this show is very popular and a lot of people are going to walk away from it with very misguided ideas about what "gypsy" people are.

    The historical background of the Fenians you put forward is completely incorrect. The Fenians derive their name from na Fianna; they weren't bandits, nor did it originate from the dark ages. They were a volunteer corps of warriors and huntsmen, who were skilled in poetry, etc. They were generally well regarded and not considered "bandits". The Fianna flourished under the reign of Cormac mac Airt in the 3rd century AD and their deeds are captured in the Fenian cycle of Irish mythology.
    Some other inaccuracies in this video too... please research more thoroughly!

    • @thenextshenanigantownandth4393
      @thenextshenanigantownandth4393 6 лет назад +7

      nah hilbert is right .historians now regard the fenians as legitimate raider bandits or at least the Etymology .who raided roman britian and perhaps more , The word Gaelic- Goidel itself is thought to have been an Old Welsh word for "pirate" or "raider" used to describe irish people during the dark ages . but the word goidel or gael actually comes from foidel or something like that-so irish fenian who raided britian would have been giving the name goidel from fenian , basically .so the fenians adventures in irish mythology may actually come from these dark age irish raids on britian ,which the irish would retell as great deeds of warriors . interestly this tradition continued with the fenian raids of canada .en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fenian_raids
      ill get back to you when l find the paper on it l always lose them and forget half of it.

      He is referring to the fenians from irish myths who i'm saying and probably hilbert are connected to the irish raids on roman britain during the dark ages .gael=fenian . that concept was later adopted by irish groups in the 16th and 20th century .who even raided canada under the fenian name

    • @dyn01234567
      @dyn01234567 6 лет назад +4

      Just to clarify in the hope of avoiding a flame war:
      "Fenian" was an umbrella term for members of the Fenian brotherhood and the Irish Republican Brotherhood. However the term was broadly used to indicate anyone who supported Irish independence throughout the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries when the various Irish independence movements were active. This is the case in Peaky Blinders.
      However, my original comment refers to the *historical background* of the term, which originates from Irish mythology, specifically the Fenian cycle (hint: it's in the name). The etymology of this word is a blend between the old Irish words "Féne" and "fianna". If there were raiders during the dark ages called Fenians (first I've heard of it, but I'll look into it), they probably get their name from mythology too, since the mythology appears to pre-date the dark ages. It is difficult to put an exact date on the mythology since it had existed via oral tradition for quite a while before it was written down.
      As regards Google searching answers - I think that's half the problem. People do a single google search and assume they know all there is to know. I speak Irish reasonably well and have read some Irish mythologies so I'm reasonably confident in what I'm saying. But don't take my word for it, do your own research! A good starting point would be the wikipedia articles "Fianna" and "Fenian Cycle".

    Great video Hilbert, but the IRA had nothing to do with the Easter rising, it was the Irish volunteers and Irish citizen's army which carried out the rising. The Irish volunteers was a militia set up in support of home-rule in Ireland, much like what Scotland has today, but radical parts of the Irish volunteers staged the rising, not wanting home-rule but a fully independent Republic. It's a very complicated issue with Ulster having there own militia which was against home-rule.

      It's funny how the working class have been the uncredited force behind a lot of fashion trends for the last 100 or so years.

    As an Irishman, I feel you could have been a little more objective/ less biased when discussing our history with England and Britain...

    Great video sir!!! My only criticism (which may no longer be valid) is you’ve got to upgrade your mic. I’d suggest a Focusrite Scarlett rig. It’s a beautiful mic & soundcard you can easily get a kit on Amazon with a stand and pop blocker for relatively cheap compared to other Shure or sennheiser setups. Either way you’ve earned a new sub from me my friend!!
