- In this tutorial I show how to download a KOReader One-click package and an install script for Mac, and then install KOReader on my Kobo Libra H2O. KOReader is a ebook launcher / UI for E Ink devices. Supported file formats include EPUB, PDF, DjVu, XPS, CBT, CBZ, FB2, PDB, TXT, HTML, RTF, CHM, DOC, MOBI and ZIP files. It’s available for Kindle, Kobo, PocketBook, Android and desktop Linux. Works great. It makes your e-reader really snappy and fast, and it adds a lot more features than it originally has. There is install scripts available for Mac, Windows, Linux.

Thank you so much for this! I was so confused with the instructions on the forum, but this video was so incredibly clear and easy to follow along. I really appreciate it!
Great. I’m glad I could help
@@svartling Hi I'm trying to write a comment but it doesn't save it.
I tried following your instructions but get "No supported packages found in the current directory". Please help.
This worked perfectly, I had literally no idea what I was doing, thank you!
You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help
Thanks a lot. I am thinking of buying a kobo but was afraid installing koreader would be too difficult. One question, is it possible to translate whole sentences in koreader (like you can do in kindle) ? If yes, with what engine ? thanks :)
Thank you thank you thank you!! I've been reading every single forum for help- I have zero knowledge on programming and I could not get it to work. This video is so clear and easy to follow and it worked perfectly- THANK YOU. Will you post a video showing how to download books wirelessly from the Calibre Library without using a USB? Also, do you know if there is any way to sort books by publishing date on the device using Koreader?
You’re welcome. Yes I will do more videos about KOReader. And no I don’t think it’s possible to sort books by publishing date
Thanks! I just installed KoReader on my Libra 2 and I love it! Do you know how to export your notes/annotations?
Yes I will do a video how soon.
Have you find a away to do it?
Hi, I haven't tried this yet but the video looks easy to follow and promising. My mom has a kobo h2o libra but we HATE that the meta data from Calibre doesn't transfer to the Kobo. I change the title of the book (in the metadata) to include the series info for the book but it does not transfer over to the kobo when I drop it from my desktop to the Kobo. I did that to make it easier for her to find the next book in the series she wants to read. I also have an old Sony ereader that I love but it does not support the collections any longer from Calibre. I was wondering if KOreader would work on my old Sony. What do you think? And I think we are going to try KOreader on my moms Kobo and see if we can do a better job with transferring the books to folders and book titles that work better for her.
Hi I don’t think it works on the Sony eReader. You can read more here:
github.com/koreader/koreader
Koreader is the reason I kept my Kobo Libra 2. I read manga in CBZ format. With the stock software the chapters of all the different manga are mixed together and you’ll have to make collections for each manga. With Koreader, all I have to do is put the chapters for each manga in the same folder.
I really don’t understand why the stock software can’t see the different folders and seperate them in different collections.
Ok. Great that it works better in KOReader.
by only installing KOreader one can not read books on kobo device one has to add books to koreader coz old books are not shown on koreader becoz of this i have installed and uninstalled KOreader several times as i had not seen my old books
hi, if you have previous settings and books on your kobo and installed koreader, will the setting and the read progress disappear?
You have them left on the normal ui. KOReader starts from scratch. When you install KOReader you still have your normal kobo and the new KOReader. You can still choose which to use.
Don't forget to leave KOBO plugged in after ejecting/unmounting! Made that mistake the first time haha
How long does it take? mine is in showing connected and charging for over 5 min already
Do you notice that KOreader discharges your reader 4-5 times more than stock firmware? Maybe it can be fixed somehow?
Yeah I notice that. Be sure that WiFi and Bluetooth is off. That helps
Thanks for the video. But I got lost at "Enter the number corresponding to the one you want to install: " What should I put there? The same "a" as you put there?
The number you get. It clearly says in the code when you running it. Probably the same though.
@@svartlingOkay. I'll try again later. Thanks!
KOreader is so amazing, I want to thanks all the people who spends their time trying to solve, improve and work hard to transform a shit software in a goodlooking guy... Thank you so much. Lot of hours of reading with pleasure. It's incredible! Awesome
Yes it’s great
Many thanks! However, we can see you clicked on 2 files to download them, but in the folder we could notice 3.. Where can be downloaded this thid file? (named KFM mac zip....)
I figured it alone: there is need of only 2 files. The "Kfm_mac..zip" file is simply the second file which is named "install.command" once unzipped. Perfect helpful content, thanks again!
The kfm Mac zip is the zip file that contains the files you need. You don’t need the zip file after it has expanded.
@@svartling thanks for your reply !
What are the differences between KOReader, Plato and Nickel Menu?
Nickel menu you get with KOReader. It’s a menu where you can start KOReader and more. Plato is a simpler version with less features than KOReader.
Hello, can you do a similar tutorial for installing Koreader on Android? I have a Palma and I am a bit lost as it seems Koreader can not be installed on Android the same way as described in this video. Thank you!
On android? Well you don’t do it like this. It’s an apk app on android. Just go to KOReader GitHub page with your browser and download the apk and click install.
I'm kinda worried that it will damage my Kobo in some way or another or slow it down / create issues
Why? Your kobo is still exactly the same. To use KOReader you have to click on it to start it every time you start the device. You don’t have to. It’s like you open a book to read.
tried to do this on a tolino vision5, but when running install.command , it says that no kobo is mounted. Is this not possible with tolino vision (which is actually a kobo ) ?
You have to check KOReader website to see if it’s supported. My understanding is that Tolino is only kobo hardware based and not software based. So you can’t follow the same guide as for kobo devices. So check for the right setup instructions on their webpage if there is any for Tolino.
Is there a way to get a better view of your books / shelves than the file manager in KOReader?
No. Sadly so. That is one of the worst things with KOReader
@@svartling Okay, thanks for the swift reply :)
You’re welcome
Question: Can Koreader work with led screen e-readers? i.e. Nook HD
It works on android devices even smartphones. But you have to check their website to see if they support your e-reader.
I don't know if I'm just being really stupid but I hit a brick wall already at step 2. I downloaded the one-click package with no issues but I can't see any way to download the install script for windows. When I click on it, it opens the script in another tab but I cannot see any option to download (even if i right click on the link it doesn't give me any option to download). I tried the mac link out of curiosity and that downloaded immediately so it seems to be a problem only with the windows script. Can you advise me how to download this script rather than simply just opening it in a new tab? I can obviously save the page that opens but then it just downloads it as text which is maybe not what is needed. Sorry if this is a basic question, I appreciate the help
same here!! did you find a solution?
too late but ppm and save file as
Does this work for Kindle Paperwhite 3, bought in 2017?
I don’t know really. Check the KOReader webpage to see what it supports. I have only installed it on kobo devices personally.
I received my Kobo Sage today and I was wondering if after installing KOreader it could void the warranty or if it is pretty simple to remove it like a book or restore factory default to do as if it was never installed. Could you tell me?
I don’t think it void your warranty because it just install some software in a folder but I don’t know for sure. Sorry
@@svartling No problem. Anyway it had a dead pixel so I will send it back wait a few years for this technology to get better or buy a used older model until then
@sirgilmour ok. I would recommend you to buy a kindle instead. Cheaper, better quality and better ui.
@@svartling i believe you but most of my reading are in cbr and cbz format. Unless you tell me KOreader works with Kindle products
@sirgilmour ok. I understand
I hope you will do another video about Koreader! I am having an hard time connecting wirelessly to Calibre?
Yes I’m planning to do more videos. I use the ODPS connection to calibre. It works great and to me it’s more useful.
@@svartling it would be awesome! I don’t know how ODPS work. I have subscribed, so I will follow your updates.
Odps is the content sharing server alternative in Calibre. With that on you get a local IP address that makes it possible for your eReader to connect directly to your Calibre server.
Thank you very much. Sadly even after "successful "install message and reboot of my Kobo Aura HD, KOREADER is not present :/ I have no idea how to fix this :( When looking at my Kobo on my PC, the files are installed though. I do not knwo why I can see the KOREADER book cover on my Kobo though :/ Edit: After restarting manually twice, Koreader wass there. I have no clue what happened. Thank you for the sweet guide!!!!!!!!
You’re welcome
Thank you so much ❤
I’m glad to help. Please like
how much storage do you need? I have a Clara 2e with 16gb, will this work?
Yes definitely. It’s just about 300MB or so
@@svartling alright thank you!
You’re welcome
I can't connect my kobo glo hd anymore with my windows pc with a USB cable. The device is not detected.
Too bad
That PNG image doesn't really do anything on mine. Maybe the latest firmware update broke it?
Probably. Don't update Kobo firmware if you want to use KOReader.
@@svartling It updated on its own when I turned it on.
Ok. I have turned off auto updates.
So basically you don't use Kobo software at all? Just koreader and that's all?
And if you need to visit library you just go to the file manager and pick the desired book?
Yes exactly. But if I want I can use kobo software. It’s still there
how can I return to a regular UI if I need? Any other way except rebooting?
Yeah you can quit KOReader from the menu
I think the installation went fine. I did everything in this video, I pressed 0 when the program ran and when it finished it said it had completed the installation. I open up my Kobo and it processes like normal, when it finishes I see the NickelMenu in the bottom right. Then I press the KOreader 'book' PNG instead of opening the menu, my screen just freezes. If I reboot and try again, this still happens. What do I do? I've installed two times now, both the same problem.
You must doing something wrong. Are you running the install scripts as you should? Are you using a Mac or windows? I don’t have windows but I know that you have to do a manual install there to make it work.
@@svartling You think so? I was thinking my Kobo is Kaputt. I use windows yes, and I followed the instructions on the 2nd post. I will try to install it via the first post, this afternoon, see if that helps.
Good luck. As I said I don’t use windows so I don’t know how exactly to do it
@@svartling I understand. Happy new year by the way.
The same to you
How can I make a custom dictionary for koreader?
That is not something I know of.
Pleasue can you tell how to do this on kindle paperwhite3 7th generation. And is the koreader support arabic fonts. And can linked to goodreads
I don’t have a kindle so I can’t.
I am sorry to tell you that you cannot install Koreader directly on Kindle ereaders. You have to jailbreak or downgrade the Kindle firmware to install any 3rd party applications on Kindle. Installing any 3rd party applications is not allowed on Kindle unless you hack the firmware. Doing that could risk the chance of having the firmware corrupted, going into an endless bootloop when starting the device or even worse, the Kindle not boot up at all. That is the con of having a Kindle device. I ditch the Kindle for Kobo because of this. You are stuck with what the Kindle firmware offers.Kobo devices are open devices. Once you own it, you can do anything with it without the company placing any restrictions on what you want to do with it.
Yeah that’s why I love Kobo eReaders
Hello.I recently bought a kobo clara 2e and I have a problem with ade.I can’t transfer epub to kobo. When I connect kobo with ade and click to authorize,it freezes and doesn’t go through with authorization.
What is ade?
@@svartling Adobe Digital Editions
Oh. Ok. I don’t use that so I can’t help you there.
@@svartling Ok thank you for your respond!!👍
I am obviously very dumb I am up to the stage of of entering the install script number where so if find this?
In the text that shows up. Same place where it says that you should enter it.
Can any pen be used with this koreader to take notes?
No you need an eReader with support for note taking for that. My Kobo Libra H2O doesn't support that. KOReader is software you install on an eReader. It's not hardware.
@@svartling thanks! I just asked because i saw someone use microsoft surface pen with the sketchpad app of kobo libra 2.
Ok. That could probably work on the libra 2 because it supports note taking
does it works withe Bq cervantes reader ?
Just go to their GitHub page and check for yourself.
Спасибо!
What are the benefits of this install?
A lot. I show some of it in this video. But I am planning to do a video more in depth of all the features. Simply you can say more settings customizations and features.
Is it worth getting KOReader for the Kobo Sage?
Not if you use the Stylus.
@@svartling Oh why not? I don't plan on using the stylus
KOReader is not meant for stylus. It does not has so good support for that. But if you not using the stylus, KOReader will work as good as on all Kobo e-readers.
Hi, I tried following you instructions but I get "No supported packages found in the current directory"
Have you downloaded the right package for your device? And is it the zipped file. Don’t unzip it.
@@svartling Hi I keep replying to this message but it disappears? Can you read my responses?
No I don’t see them
@@svartling If I paid you something, could you help me troubleshoot this live? It's for my son and would really appreciate the help.
My Windows install script is just a bunch of words in a web page, no downloadable file at all. I tried to install manually adding the FeatureSetting thing, but after the reboot i see only a simple png file of koreader, and if i open it doesnt start any menu
@@svartling mmh, it links to the same site where the Windows script is just a txt file on a web page 😕
But just right click on the script link and choose download
@@svartling done, but it gives me a .txt file of that page
You are obviously doing something wrong but I don’t have windows so I don’t think I can help you more than this tutorial.
@@ZEROooooish for me it saved as install.ps1 Try changing your .txt to .ps1 simply by changing the name
Does this method work on Kindle?
Only on very old versions. Not on new.
HI i can not download Windows install script,?
Can you help me ? please
Sorry I don’t use windows but you have instructions on the site where you download them.
What do I after I update the kobo firmware? It doesn't work now :/
I never do a kobo update. I think you have to install KOReader again.
@@svartling nvm you just have to reinstall KFMon and it works again. In the last update they added a Swedish dictionary :D maybe you'll like it
Cool :). Well maybe I’ll check that. Thanks for the tip
I'm not that plrased at all with koreader. It cannot handle mobi or azw files properly. It crashes constantly with large pdf files, etc.
Ok. To your information I can tell you that Mobi is a dead file format. Amazon has stopped using it and it is discontinued. I use KEPUB files on my Kobo devices and KoReader and it never crashes and has great formatting options. And I don't read PDF's on any e-Reader because it's a terrible experience. I don't have a Kindle with KOReader on, but if I had, I would use the new format called KFX or KF8.
i have "BQ Cervantes 3 eReader "can work for me ??
No idea. I have never heard of it. Check their forums.
The GitHub pages sages runs on Cervantes
What’s the best ereader device to do this in 2024?
Kobo Clara 2E
@@svartling thanks mate
@minatal8411 you’re welcome
How do you export your notes to calibre?
I don’t. You can’t do that. Not what I know of anyway
so , where to you export then? I was using KoHighlights but its not working well@@svartling
@vespuciomascarenhas1189 I export to a markdown file on the e-reader itself that I then copy from the device to an app of choice. I use Drafts on my Mac, iPhone and iPad.
Anyone having trouble running the install script make sure you have PowerShell 7
Can you do a video by windows please
No I can’t. I don’t use windows
sir i have installed KOreader as you told it is installed but can not see my books
What books? You need to add them into KOReader. You can’t use your old kobo books.
how to add books on KO reader
@jayantabaruah74 you find a lot of videos on my channel on how to add books.
what about kindle pw5 ?
I have no experience with installing on kindle but you need to have rooted it first. I don’t think kindle devices need KOReader though. They are already great as is.
@Stefan Svartling thank you so much, Stefan
You’re welcome
You can disable automatic ZIP extraction on Mac.
Yes but I think that is quite convenient
How do you uninstall ?
For koreader, just delete folder where you installed it.
@@svartling will that uninstall nickle menu and kfmon?
That’s harder to do. Check this: www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=345972

I haven’t slowed down the video. Where do you mean that happened?
@@svartling i put the video in 1.5 and it was perfectly paced.
That is all up to you. That is a choice you can make in the RUclips app. Some like to speed up and some like to slow down.
Do the pc version
I don’t own a windows pc.
I know KOReader is great and all but it's settings UI is disgusting and hard to click or is that just me?
It’s just you :)

I like very much Koreader which is really better than the kobo interface !
I Just followed this thread, but no solution.
You shouldn’t update the kobo. It removes the complete KOReader folder from the device. So now you have to start all over again and install it
@@svartling it was an automatic update . I tried to re install but it don t work . I have nickelmenu but when I clic koreader it freeze completely the kobo and I must restart the device. I tried to re instal’ many times and different ways . Nothing work
