The 2025 EX30 Is Affordable Electric Volvo We've Been Promised

- Volvo's 2025 EX30 might just be the bite-size electric crossover that catapults Volvo's sales into new territory. In addition to a trove of pictures and details we have the base MSRP whichat $34,950 certainly raises hopes and eyebrows. As will the performance numbers.
The EX30 wears similar styling to the EX90 in a much smaller package. At 166 inches long, this is a few inches more compact than a Mini Countryman. Also interesting: despite EX30 sounding awfully crossover like, there will also be a Cross Country variant. That one adds body cladding, Cross Country graphics, 19" black wheels (or optional 18s with tougher rubber), skid plates all around, and more ground clearance.
At the start Volvo will offer just one battery with a usable capacity of 64 kWh powering a 268-hp rear motor. That one will get you 275 miles of range and 0-60 in 5.1 seconds. Want more power? Volvo will add a 154 HP motor in the front that will drop 0-60 sprints to 3.4 seconds making this the fastest Volvo ever made. It also won't drop your range much with a 265 mile projected range. DC fast charges pea at 153 kW, which means 10% to 80% in about 27 minutes.
Pre-orders are open now, should we order a base model? Volvo Car USA

If they hit that price point, it will put a lot of pressure on the other automakers. The $30k-$40k ev space needs way more models so more people can access them
The Cross Country version looks so awesome
Right? A/Ts and a factory lift? Take my money!
It looks great, but it’s gonna take a serious range hit, and then hard to see being able to take that on many off the beaten path adventures. The version I would want, would be if they could do the cross-country with 350miles range. Or a version with the smaller battery option they offer in the EU, but with AWD, to use as a commuter car.
@@cypvh74 Not many people took the gas powered XCs on off the beaten path adventures. People who do that aren't going to buy an EV at all.
Volvo does it again. This is a gorgeous and well thought out design. The industry should really be looking at Volvo when it comes to timeless design.
The center screen only and no hud is a serious fail, though.
Terrific assessment of the new offering. Thanks for the information. I just watched the premiere on the Volvo channel and your video fills in all the questions I had. This is going to slay the small SUV space, I imagine. Exciting times!!!
I too watched Volvo's YT EX30 premier, hosted by Jim Rowan, Volvo's CEO, and was mightily impressed by the car, but also by the video, which I found both informative and entertaining.
Looks like a good replacement for the Bolt. Although from your description it sounds like be somewhat smaller.
Looks like it’s bigger than the bolt EUV inside, but it’s hard to say. The EX30 is more upright and boxy
No $7500 rebate makes it much more expensive.
@@dannataf1998 if you make too much money you don’t get the tax rebate anyway, and you may be able to get the rebate on a lease. So for some buyers they’re on an equal footing.
Volvo design always does it for me, especially that Cross Country trim!
I would not call it affordable, but this is great value for what you get
Greetings from southern Ontario Canada I really enjoyed the video looking forward to seeing this vehicle here
Boy racers will be queueing up to buy.... a Volvo? What a sleeper.
What an attractive mini SUV. I have the Bolt EUV and this looks like a great replacement a few years down the line. Will definitely love more videos on the Volvo EX30! ❤
Thanks for the preview Alex - this looks like a very solid offering from Volvo and, if available at that price point, I see cars like this representing the tipping point for EVs, allowing them to become serious mainstream vehicles.
It may be a tipping point for Volvo as well...
This is really interesting. Hopefully there won't be too much price gouging at launch. The base one is intriguing, all EVs should start with RWD
I kinda always figured FWD is a good base offering being regen ability tends to be a bit better than having the motors on the rear axle.
There will 100% be price gouging
@ALMX5DP true, but stability is greater coming from the rear.
@@nc3826 what kind of stability are you referring to?
It's made in China, so hopefully there's a large tariff smacked on top of it in the US.
I was very interested in this vehicle until the interior came into play. For the price point, I'm not even bothered about the cheaper materials inside. Where I draw the line is having only a center display for instrument cluster duties. Hated it when I first saw it on the Toyota Echo many years back and I hate it now for any vehicle that doesn't give the driver information in front of them. Maybe a HUD (Head-Up Display) can remedy that, but I haven't seen that as an option and not everyone can properly see HUDs.
I have the same feeling about my Aptera reservation. There are lots of aftermarket HUDs out there - I'm hoping one of those will close the gap with the most important information.
That's a lot of checkboxes done for the price. I'm looking forward to your review.
Holy crap, this looks like an amazing package.
I think at first blush I’d be very happy with a base model especially at that price. I’d happily trade in my gas XC40 for one. The only problem is RWD is awful in my area because of how much snow we get, even with snow tires. Maybe the battery pack weight would help, but my last RWD vehicle with snow tires I still had to add weight over the rear axle to get any usable grip from stops, especially on hilly streets we have. 😢 This would be great in a milder climate, though.
Wow - could be perfect little premium run about and commuter in the non-cross country trim
This is SEA2 platform vehicle from Volvo’s owner Geely. Smart #1 and #3, Zeekr X and EX30 are the same vehicle, with some branding differences. Check the power output for example. 200kW RWD, 315kW AWD all of them. That’s not a coincidence.
Volvo Sweden had very little to do with this vehicle, all the work was done in China by Geely R&D. But sure - Scandinavian style…
I like it, and the price seems competitive!
It looks great, thanks Alex. I really hope they're able to keep the price low and sell like hotcakes!
This looks awesome for the price IMO. Hopefully they can hit the price target.
Finally a smallish and more affordable EV from one of the luxury European manufacturers.
*gasp* that looks fantastic. I’m still a HUGE proponent of the PHEV, but that is a solid little vehicle
Is the glass roof standard? Is it electrochomatic?
I love the idea of a small, affordable EV with decent range. That's why I drive a Bolt. I am intrigued and very interested in the EX-30 and I hope it is successful in North America. Ian (Toronto)
It looks like a good proposition. Styling, power, interior space... If they can make that $ 35 000 price point, it'll be great!
Actually there will be an even cheaper version in Europe starting from about 30k! Only avaliable in 2025 tho
@@Kurre. Do you mean that this car won't be launched in the EU until 2925?
Okay. This is VERY interesting 🤔
It’s all about the PRICE and RANGE.
The GM Equinox EV is the real game changer. 511+ KM range. ✅
Yes, the pre-order has begun and I am itching to reserve one 🙂
This is the car I've been waiting for, good price, good power with rear drive, good range, it's a homerun. I was looking at Bolts but they're hard to find and the FWD was a compromise for the good price. And they're being discontinued. I really like Smart #1 but they're not available in the US and it's practically the same as the EX30.
This is an exciting product for me!
I will seriously consider trading in my i3s for this! 🤔
I like it. It's a shame Chevy didn't update the Bolt to have similar specs.
THIS IS MY CAR! Finally!!
It is gorgeous
What a cute and elegant baby Volvo this is, simply brilliant ✨🇸🇪
If these price points hold... this might be a serious contender for my commuter/city runner
Hell if they switch to the NACS plug like Ford and GM, it'll even be a good road tripper
That is a great looking car!
It looks great in my opinion. And the price is - for todays standards - pretty low for that what you get. We have already it's sibling out here, the Smart #1. But the Volvo looks much better in my opinion.
I’m really liking this! I’m thinking this is going to replace my Toyota RAV4 EV. Too good of a price to pass up!
Hey Alex, I am intrigued and look forward to your full review.
I have a question - while shopping for an EV, several dealerships were promoting leasing with the caveat of being able to take the $7500 tax credit off the top. Would love to get your take on this.
Thx for all the terrific reviews. Stay well.
Not every leasing company qualifies. So confirm it with the leasing company and make sure it's included in the leasing contract.
Alex has also done posts on this matter.
Beautiful & well equipped-enticing price.Wish it was made in (future)US & driver instrument panel behind steering wheel & LFP battery in US.Very attractive and convenient size!
Looks like a fantastik city car.
Looks great. Hopefully the door frames aren’t super narrow like the xc40
This could be a great successor to my (Canadian market) 2021 Kia Soul EV 64 kWh. Kia Canada just discontinued the Soul EV after 2023MY, and this EX30 seems to be a perfect fit! Yay
Very very intrigued by the price point. I hope it represents a shift that will make EVs more affordable for more people.
Hopefully they adopt the NACS plug. Ill get either this or the Equinox EV. Charging access may make the difference
That price tag is very compelling. Competitive with most mainstream hybrids from Toyota, Hyundai +
It’s not as good as hyundai but way better than toyota
@@naveenthemachine that is true. The EGMP platform is hard to beat and Hyundai is always improving. I like this option tho as a big Volvo fan.
Hyundai 800 volt architecture still has the lead, when it comes to DCFC charging times.... But Hyundai has nothing, competing with it, in this segment....
Volvo seems to have a winner.....I just hope they would change their mind and build it outside of China too....
All the colors!
For that price It'll be hard to ignore. Could be the replacement for my Polestar 2.
That's a killer price
Indeed - sadly, with the U.S. tariff system there will be a nearly 30% up charge on that base price. And there’s still no word on if it will reach Canada.
I love my C40. I'm going to put in a pre-order for this. I wish it had a small driver display or a heads-up display. Other than that, I love it!
yep MUST have a HUD.
@@rivergladesgardenrailroad8834 So it's zeekr x
I like the design, waiting on the price for the AWD and interior dimensions.
Better proportions I’d say but range and country of origin (Build & Batteries) will put all this in perspective. 6:41
Yes, absolutely.
Looks great, my only concern is how tight that back row is. Looks like it could hold a lot of stuff with the back row down.
Some might also complain about the car's cargo capacity, but for a car that size something has to give. There's still a huge market, however, for an affordable in-town EV SUV that can carry one or two adults and a couple of kids.
@@CaryInVictoriaI agree about a small car making trade offs. This is no SUV as that it is smaller than my Ford C-Max Energi by 17.78 centimetres!
I'm intrigued. And at the price of $35K, it's pretty reasonable if it come reasonably well equipped.
Am I intrigued? Yes, absolutely.
I drive Subaru now and the Cross Country version looks like something that might work for me.
this is really cool looking - but whats with all these high seat backs? I'm a 5'2 woman and i'm worried these seats will be super uncomfortable for me - the part of the headrest which is supposed to go behind your neck hits me in the middle of my head
they make a smaller lfp batteri, but not for US. It is about 5 k$ lower priced. Very nice design and specs.
Very nice!! Hopefully you can make enough so your dealers won't try to price gouge us!! They wanted $7000 down and $1300 a month to lease a C40!!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!
Ford is pushing for fixed pricing for EVs.... There's a series of NADA lawsuits, over it..... Depending on how the lawsuits turned out.... Fixed pricing may become, much more common???
But then we couldn't bitch on RUclips about price gouging, so what fun would that be !!!!!! LOL!!!!!!!
I want it!!!!!!
looks like a Volvo version of Geely Zeekr X in Chinese market
It's a shame the US models will not get a LFP battery option.
Exterior is adorable and the Cross Country trim looks awesome but what happened with the interior? Really hate when other automakers adhere to the Tesla school of interior design.
The cross country version would have my interest, if not for it likely losing range. Not being eligible for the tax credit is a big issue though. If the Honda Prologue, for example, starts at around $45k and is likely to be eligible for the rebate.. that would be 37.5k for a much bigger vehicle with longer range. Then there’s the equinox would should be extremely competitive. But I do really like the ex30 styling.
RIP Lexus UX. Volvo has nailed this ev
The ux is objectively nonexistent. This Volvo is the real deal
What's the over/under on how quickly the EX30 goes from the affordable $35,000 EV to another unaffordable $50,000+ EV like the Model 3? And, probably to get that low base price, one probably ends up having to waiting longer to get it, compared to more expensive trims, just like the Model 3.
Exactly like the $40,000 F-150 lightning. Let's hope the base price is more than just marketing hype.
I love that EX30. I'm a person that wants everything sci fi and futuristic technology. Robocop will like to drive the EX30 police car. M3GAN, Robocop, and Terminator will like to drive the EX30s and any EV cars. I'll like to be like the people in the sci fi movies with futuristic technology.
I ❤ it !
love the extrior styling and the price is right, but no console buttons? I'm out.
An impressive EV. But the fact that Geely plans to build it only in China, leaves a lot of open questions.
How can they sell it so inexpensively when they have to pay a 27.5% import tariff?
And will the $7500 leasing loophole still be available when It is produced?
I hope Geely changes its mind and produces it in South Carolina instead.
This seems to be a new trend with the latest wave of EV’s. Now the technology is established we are getting great design on robust platforms and well priced units (entry level units for EX30 and Fisker Ocean at around a promised $35K). I wonder what the interior materials are going to be like to the touch at this price level. We’ve already seen £50K and £60K EVs with an interior sense of luxury no where near what the price would suggest. One of the reasons I went with the GV60- there’s a sense of luxury commensurate with the price tag which a lot of EV’s simply don’t have. I watch this space eagerly to see what the interiors of the production models of both the Fisker Ocean and EX30 are actually like to touch.
It may be the general public don’t care in which case happy days for mainstream EV’s as they start to get more affordable while keeping appeal.
But I can’t get over the rock hard materials being used in some interiors of modern EV’s and the sense of complete bargain basement that comes with some of them despite the heft price tags!
My 2021 BMW i3 is smaller at 158" L x 63" H, while my 2023 Bolt EV is 163" L x 63". This Volvo is 166" L x 61" H so it is within the dimensions of a subcompact EV.
This might be the most compelling new EV and CUV for me. The price almost sounds too good to be true. I am not a crossover enthusiast personally, I do my best to ignore the segment generally speaking. This thing looks awesome though, I love the design language from Volvo (and Polestar) and the small size is intriguing as a city dweller. If my money were on the line, I'd get the off-road trim.
Where will it be built and will it be eligible for all or part of the federal EV tax credit? Will there be a HUD to compensate for the lack of a speedometer / instrument cluster? Does one need to agree to privacy invasion to use the Google based tablet grafted onto the dashboard?
How does this compare in size to the Lexus Ux?
This is so much better than the UX. The ux is so boring that it’ll make you yawn just by looking at it
How close in size is it to the Kona or Niro?
about the size of the Originals, but the updated models are 7/8" + longer.
I would potentially buy one if they can truly hit all those parameters
it looks like a
volvo, and people who love volvo will be in their comfort zone. Those drivers treat volvo, as a means of getting from a to b, and nothing more. They are the opposite to car nuts. nothing wrong with that
If you want the same underpinnings, with more style look to the #1 Smart.
I like it! Will it be imported from China? I can't imagine hitting the $35K price point and assembling them in Torsland, Skovde, or Ridgeville SC.
Probably, but I don’t think they have said for sure where the US bound units will be built
The only production for this model that's being reported at this point is coming from China..... You would think the Chinese tariff and the IRA would incentivize US production?
This is the one.
Will it boast V2G?
Will probably be my next Volvo now then the old Volvo Laplander Campern is sold.
What is the cost of the dual motor?
Sadly we don’t know yet
If I can get this for the same price point as the (still nonexistent) Aptera, then I'm in 100%.
If anything could beat the Tesla model y, this really just might be it
Can we cross country the XC40, too?
I was hoping for LFP pack.
That was the original promise.
I do have some doubts that the final production version will have an NMC battery?
Looks nice but Fisker PEAR will be much better.
Excuse me single motor 268 hp and 435 kms per charge according to the Canadian website
Most of the Volvo EX30's bought will cost considerably more. $35K is a basic model and I don't know when that'll be available. And please note, Volvo plans to sell direct and online to customers so dealer markup shouldn't be an issue with their EVs.
The size is right, but I still believe a driver needs their own instrument screen. Not a fan of just the one center screen. Still wishing the electric Kia Soul was available in the US!
Aftermarket dashboards are made for Teslas..... So maybe somebody will make it for this model too????
It will be interesting to see how this compares to the new Lexus LBX small SUV.
This absolutely slaughters the LBX in every aspect
@@naveenthemachine how so? Because it is chinese?
@@user-zh9kc7tw4n No because it’s cooler. It looks better, interior is better, space is better, performance is SIGNIFICANTLY better, and it’s also significantly cheaper
@@naveenthemachinenot sure it is cooler but from what i have seen yes performance will be better, size bigger cheaper well time will tell as you never know what extras you have to pay for.. Just one draw back it is Battery powered.
Kia Niro EV is $39K and is ~10 inches longer
Bolt replacement? 166 inches is longer than the Bolt EV and shorter than the Bolt EUV. Seems much closer in size than the new Chevy Equinox.
The Equinox EV is 190.4 inches long
@@chezzyperson3339 The Equinox was a disappointment to me, I wanted a smaller vehicle with RWD. At least the price is good, maybe.
I see that they'll be no Fed kiss on this. And their pricing follows. No implied profit margin added on the backs on the Fed incentive. Is Volvo conservative in their range estimates?
It's a big deal, but it's not the C30 we need.
In the non-cross country trim, wouldn’t call it a crossover. It’s a hatchback.
No matter how low the MSRP, stealer will adjust it to a non-affordable price. Pre-order will not help. They will adjust once it arrive.
What a nice looking car by any standard. Can't imagine why it has to be so absurdly fast. Has to be inexpensive I think to compete with EVs that get rebates.
EVs are just fast. There’s very little reason to use smaller motors, as it doesn’t save much cost, weight, or size.
