Most if not all PS1 neo-geo ports cut a lot of frames up until KOF99. If you see it faster that's because it skipped some frames. Even the sound qualities are not on par to the neogeo (not for this release tho). As for the slowdowns i heard it was heredity from the neogeo version. Meaning the original metal slug 1 on neogeo lagged on certain scenes (mostly building/huge explosions).

Between these 2 platform it is a toss up, there is slow down in both(slightly more on the Saturn), there is more frequent loading on the Playstation, and there seems to be minor detail differences in some of the graphics/backgrounds, as well as a slight difference in aspect ratio.
I would like to see a comparison between these and the Neo Geo original.

Seems to be a lot of ‘Saturn 2D stalwarts’ making comments without watching this video. The slight animation cuts and mini loading is down to RAM. Otherwise 2D game championing on Saturn is overused and tiresome. Much more 2D variety exists on PS1.
Saturn 2D video capability is largely and ironically seen in its 3D games. But that’s another story…

What am I missing here? The ps1 version looks terrible with the missing animation frames and in-game loading times (which should not have passed quality checks imo haha)
I love the ps1 but it can't do heavy 2D graphics.
Regarding the saturn version. This could have benefited from the 4mb cartridge like the kof and capcom fighters no?

    • @vasileios6301
      @vasileios6301 4 месяца назад

@@jonnyblanka Ps1 had KOF98-99, Last Blade and Metal Slug X from Neogeo side and Capcom vs SNK, Marvel vs Capcom and Jojos Bizzare Adventure from Capcom side that are excellent ports and Saturn never got.
Also Ps1 has a big variety in 2d games that like with the Saturn 2d games, they stayed in Japan.
So telling Ps1 cant do heavy 2d graphics is absolutely a lie.
4mb cart in Saturn was specific on Capcom games not on Snk ones and the only game that excelled on that was the Xmen vs SF (and Marvel vs SF), all others offered just a few more frames of animation and better loading times agains Ps1 same games.

this is a Neo Geo game, there's nothing special here, it runs on low resolution and low color. But it has animation in buckets, that's the only reason the stock 32 bit systems could not run perfect versions of it.
X-men Children of Atom and MSH have reduced graphics on PS1, so, obviously, Saturn's fame on 2D is not because of its RAM expansions.

I had the Saturn-version of MS1 and I also had MS3 and MS4 for the Neo Geo AES.
People always make you think the differences are huge and the PS1 would be so bad at 2D, but to be honest:
The PS1-verison looks totally fine for me and I would not have been disappointed if I had to play that one.
Gameplay-wise, I would have loved to see some kind of weapon-powerup-system, so you have the sensation of getting mighty and stronger (instead of just changing weapons constantly) and more differences between the characters (are there any differences at all?).

They could've used that as a point to them that compensates for all the missing animation frames, loading times mid level, and that ugly AF shotgun blast.
The only thing i can say PS1 has a slight edge over the Saturn version is the increased layers of ahd more pronounced parallax scrolling. Otherwise, the Saturn beats it out in even with the slowdown because thst was actually in the first 2 MVS/AES versions of the series - thus the existence of Metal Slug X, a reworked version of MS2 that ran as well as the improvements they learned to use from then on. Was always confused why X had the same levels as 2 until I played the first one. I have the MVSX arcade machine by Unico that comes w/ 1-5 and it still has the slowdown in both MVS and AES roms in the same spots in 1 and 2. Therefore, i can't really hold it against the Saturn. - especially if it used the 4MB RAM cart insread if the 1MB expansion, which I assume it would've because it likely existed by then and why not use as much extra RAM available. They should've made all 1MB cart compatible games the option of using the 4MB cart so you could improve performance even more if you had acess to more memory (plus would only need the 4MB cart if you aren't using one of the 3/4-in-1 pseudokai carts or similar). I don't know how much they could improve performance in this port though considering it was technically faithful to how the arcade version played.

@@quinnhofmann5399 Metal Slug was April 4th, 1997. The 4MB RAM cart was released November 27th, 1997. So no. There was no way they could have had forward compatibility unless Sega told them they were releasing a 4MB cart. Which doesn't seem to be the case because it's Sega in the 90s. Sega didn't bother to tell SNK about the RAM expansion cart early, that's why King of Fighters 95 had that ROM cart, that can only be used with KOF95.

@@BurritoKingdom I was thinking it'd be cool if the 4MB cart worked in a way were games that used the 1MB cart and it could use 25% of the how 4MB extra ram plugged into the console (some can) as some only work when 1MB is inserted even though it doesn't need the other 3MB available probably via some check that looks at the total RAM value and if it's 1MB more than the amount the base console contains it gives it the OK to boot. There is a reason why those 3/4-in-1 carts to have a switch with positions for 1MB, 4MB, or none because Metal Slug only boots when at the 1MB position even when there is more than enough than what it needs... then as more of a pipe dream wish, that the way the software and hardware interface together allowed for the equivalent of overclocking. Obviously devs wouldn't know how to preemptively code for something in the future they don't know exits, but the explanation you gave to you show how stupid my thought was is exactly what PC gamers do and been doing for decades to get better performance settings for a game that's struggling to smoothly run at settings they consider playable: installing more RAM or GPU/CPU processing power. It isn't that far off to think that games that can optionally utilize more memory than the base amount in the console that it wouldn't need exactly 1MB inserted but not use some of the memory of a cart with even more, and if they're making a game that utilized the RAM expansion slot it isn't that crazy to think the devs could forese a bigger one is possible and code it in a way that could use more if available but run with what the current max is. I mean, it was marketed as having a slot for expanding memory and I'm sure devs were privy to a lot more inside info than the public. Why you gotta shoot down a totally theoretical idea and question my reasoning skills, yo?

PlayStation didn't have enough RAM to hold the whole stage. The only reason Saturn could hold the whole stage is because it requires the 1MB RAM expansion.
The reason it couldn't "hide" the loading is because the CD drive isn't fast enough to stream all the texture data. On the PS1 sprites are actually 2 polygons with the sprite as a texture. PS1 only had 1MB of VRAM and that holds all the textures, colors and all other graphical data.
Games that hid the loading did stuff like the loading corridors in Castlevania, which wouldn't be similar to the arcade version if you had to walk for 10 seconds in an empty corridor before every boss and mini boss battle.

The N64, DC, Xbox, etc. There is no more 2D rendering in the traditional sense unless it's all done thru the CPU with software rendering. Handhelds still kept the traditional sprites with the GBA and the DS but the PSP, Vita and 3DS did it the PlayStation way.

RAM cart wouldn't even help with slow down. The reason the game requires the RAM cart is so it doesn't need to load during the middle of stages and cut frames of animation like the PS1 version.
The slow down is due to the CPUs on the Saturn not being able to calculate all that information or mostly likely SNK only using one of the SH-2 CPUs on the Saturn rather both of them. Slow down in 2D games of that era were due to the CPU, which is why alot SNES games had slow down because the CPU was slow. If it's due to the GPU, you'll see alot flickering like on NES games. If it's missing frames of animation than it's due to RAM or small cartridge space.

On PS1 the water just looks like static image flickering on and off (which tend to hurt the eyes) but on Saturn the water looks like they are actually flowing. I've not played it, but I hear that the slowdown in the Saturn port is rather representative of the original arcade version. That suggests it was ported over with very little optimisation. I've also heard that if the RAM cart isn't seated just right, it can make the slowdown worse. Still, having a RAM cart at all gives the Saturn a distinct advantage over the PlayStation here, but not having the access speed of the AES nor the sheer size of the Neo Geo CD's RAM would prevent a perfect conversion.

@@bizarroeddie1 actually, some games work with both, some only with 1MB (the graphics get corrupted for a lot of SNK fighters that use the 1MB cart) and then there are some that require a game specific expansion cart (KOF 95 and an Ultraman game - those were like 1.3MB and 3MB IIRC, but don't hold me to the size of those 2 carts). That's why there's a switch with positions for 1MB, no, or 4MB RAM on those 3/4-in-1 carts. My copy of Metal Slug only boots if I have it switched to the 1MB position even though there is technically more available inside, it is just hidden. Maybe it was my copy or the unlicensed the 4-in-1 cart I used it with but I remember when I got it and was looking at a compatibility list thinking "weird that more RAM than necessary caused issues with certain games that used 1MB expansion. That's my biggest gripe - but what I was really thinking of was if the 1MB supported games from before the 4MB cart came around could tap into even more memory to increase performance when needed (just need to make sure to cap the speed so it doesn't end up running super rapidly like if it was beinf FFWD)
