    I don't know if i would have thought to count on a piece of paper and then poured it in the bag.... I would have probably dropped a few as i handled them wrong LOL great videos as always.

    Believe it or not, this "boring" video was a help to me- like so many of your others have been. I picked up my RV-14A wing kit at the factory (we live in Central Oregon) two weeks ago. I wasn't going to open the crates and inventory the parts because I plan to start on the empennage first but it's not available yet. I didn't want wing kit parts taking up shelf space in my hangar for a year while I'm working on the other kit. I had a sneaking hunch that Van's would probably require that we inventory the kit within some time frame but I was sticking my head in the sand. You confirmed there is in fact a deadline to do the inventory in 30 days. Sigh...so much easier to just leave them in the crates. Maybe I'll buy a couple more shelves. Anyway, thanks again for sharing your build.

      I know exactly what you mean. I have limited shelf space, too, and I didn't want wing parts mixing into the empennage parts before I needed them. Plus it's kindof satisfying to see the shelves of tail parts get more and more bare. I packed a lot of the wing parts loosely back into the crates to keep them safe while I finish the empennage.

    I saw you answered a question regarding whether or not you are still building. We are happy to hear you are. I’m sure it’s a ton of work to post videos. Looking forward to them whenever you can!

      Thanks for the feedback, and I'm definitely hoping to get around to posting some more videos soon. I've got a huge backlog of raw footage, just need to find some time to do some editing🙂

    Congrats on the wing kit! Every part starts with a W- xxxx. 🤪. What I found helpful was to look up the part on the digital rv14 parts index and the. Label and separate that part with which section it came in. If you are curious what it is you can usually quickly identify what part it is at the first page of the section. The fuselage will be even worse because there aren’t as many obvious parts like this. 👍

      @missiletwentynine2667  2 года назад

      Good idea about the sections. I'll reorganize once I make room on some shelves. I was surprised at how many (smaller) sections the wing plans have. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but with the emp kit it makes sense to have sections for each part - VS, rudder, HS, elevators, etc. Maybe I expected the wings to be one big section, though that seems pretty stupid in hindsight. Duh.

      @@missiletwentynine2667 Curious what your response will be for the aileron pushrods. I told them I would wait or they should ream and powder coat the alternative parts for us. I know other builders are doing the same. I’m assuming you got the same email today regarding B/O pushrods?

    • @missiletwentynine2667
      @missiletwentynine2667  2 года назад

      @@smellyallen I told them I would wait as well, actually. Didn't think to ask them to ream and powder coat for me, but that seems like a reasonable request, depending on how anxious a builder is to get the parts. I of course am months away from needing them, so I'm not in any rush.

    For inventory on the bolts and screws of slightly different sizes I found stacking them vertically on their head made it a lot faster 🤞

    • @missiletwentynine2667
      @missiletwentynine2667  2 года назад

      Yep, I do that too sometimes. I'll usually measure one as a check, then make sure the others are the right relative lengths.

  • @EJWash57

    Thanks for sharing this video. My first kit and inventory was the RV-14 Empennage/Tail Kit. I really got into the nitty-gritty of it. Measured and counted every fastener - except the solid rivets, which are allotted by weight. I did measure (diameter/length) one from each bag though. The process did familiarize me with nomenclature and how fasteners are measured. I'm sure I took more time than most builders, but I like knowing the details. In my case, I was only missing a few items, all fasteners. I am very impressed with those at Van's that fulfill kit orders.

    • @missiletwentynine2667
      @missiletwentynine2667  2 года назад +1

      Great point about measuring one of each rivet in a bag! When I inventoried my empennage kit I did something similar. I can't say I measured each one, but I lined the bags up in ascending order and by type (426 and 470, AD4s and AD3s, etc.) and spot-checked a few for length. I didn't do that with the wing, but I'll also say that at this point I've bought enough extra rivets that I'm not too worried about running out. But definitely wouldn't want to accidentally be grabbing the wrong size during the build, either.

    I could be wrong but I think time spent inventorying your parts counts towards the build and is calculated into the build time to qualify these kits as majority completed by builder for the requirements for experimental airworthiness cert.

    • @missiletwentynine2667
      @missiletwentynine2667  2 года назад

      I actually did record an entry in my log for this for the wing. I don't think I did for the emp kit, but that's ok. I'm going to be WAY over any sort of build time requirement. I thought the E-AB qualifications were more "task based" than time based, but I'm still keeping up with my time spent, too. Can't hurt. Plus, if I ever decide I want to become an A&P, I believe this time can be applied to those requirements as well.

    Would you recommend a quick build kit for the wings? Trying to decide whether I want someone else doing all this for me and not knowing what was done….

    • @missiletwentynine2667
      @missiletwentynine2667  Год назад

      Oh, that's a tough one. I've got to believe that Van's knows what they're doing, and the quick-build quality would be top notch. And I've heard other builders say the wings are a lot of repetitive work, so quick build wings could eliminate some of the less interesting work. I guess it just depends on whether you want to build or fly more. I personally want to be able to point at this thing when I'm done and say, "I built the whole thing." ... even if it takes the rest of my life (LOL).

    Why manually count? A couple hundred dollar high end scale out to 3 decimals will allow you to weigh one, weight the batch. This is how the factory does it. Countless hours saved

    • @missiletwentynine2667
      @missiletwentynine2667  2 года назад

      That's a good idea. For the rivets, it's not necessary to count them. For some of the screws and washers and such, often there are multiple sizes and types in the same bag, so sorting before counting / weighing would still be required.
