Great setup! What I would add for my build is... Look I to folding table legs (card table style) for the legs so you don't need the Allen wrench. More of aock in place thing. I'd also use black carpet to match the rear lower carpet. Thanka for sharing
Someday I may do something different with the legs. The screws can shake loose when driving down gravel roads, so it's not perfect. But in general, I get daily use out of this. I don't do a lot of things right but I've felt pretty good about this build.
Fantastic Job of design, build, & explaining of all the functions. The PDF of parts list, dimensions, and plans is awesome as well. Thank you for sharing, yet another, sleeping platform & storage option that can be used in a 4runner.
Built the platform over this past weekend. Turned out great. One change is that there is a 1x4x23" that should be a 1x4x13" for the driver side trunk portion. Happy to go out and test it some time soon
WIsh I saw this comment before the weekend, could have recorded a quick video of me getting ready for bed while boondocking as I used it this weekend. Going in head-first is sort of tricky and I gave up on that quickly. You would have to go in halfway, roll over, and then pull your legs up. I actually go in feet first. I have a roof rack, and I hold on to that, swing my lower half in, then reach in for the handle above the door and pull the rest of my body in. Actually got pretty quick at it. And I exit the same way. Where it is still tricky is if I am stealth camping or it's raining so I have to go from the driver seat to the back without exiting the vehicle. We manage to pull this off in West Yellowstone by removing the headrests to give us some room to work with. My friend crawled over the seat and head-first and turned around because she is a 110lb yogi. I am twice her size. With the headrest moved, I would get my feet on the seat, then one foot at a time, lift over the seat onto the platform, and back into my bed.
Fabulous design! I love the flexibility. I bet your platform is whisper-quiet on the road. I’m considering using table legs which can adjust in 2-inch increments which also have levelers at the bottom for fine adjustments. But they are pricey… Your video has got me thinking about the DIY pipe-and-flange approach. Thanks for the detail, tips & tricks, and lessons learned!
I remember looking up extending legs and between prices and limitations in supported weight I decided against it. Also, later I learned that the tubing can be purchases in pre-cut lengths (4", 6", 12", 18"). I covered it in a related video ruclips.net/video/6wmUJuJpzj8/видео.html
This is genius. Thank you for sharing! I also appreciate that the platform goes high enough to be level with the edges of the folded seats. The space isn't long enough for me to sleep otherwise. Even expensive platforms for sale don't make the platform high enough.
I found that the more some of those platforms cost, that the least flexible they were. On my longer trips I take out the back seats all together for storage space. I guess if I never had a use for the backseats I would leave them out and maybe build a slightly longer platform. I guess with this design I could, I could have extended sections for the front. Something to consider!
I just bought a 4 runner (same year and trim as you, except I got the gunmetal gray color). I am going to be traveling full time in it. I am going to take out 60% back seats and the front seat (since I need storage and its just me and the dog). The 40% back seat I want to keep so if I need to sit up I have a spot to do that. Thanks for the video and very detailed decription section. Also, thank you for your sacrifice (retired army here).
I remove the backseats for extended road trips and it frees up sooooo much storage space. If I didn't have kids around, the seats would stay out and I'd do even more modding. I was born on Ft Hood. In fact my entire family was Army, I had to be a rebel and joined the Corps ;)
@kneepayne My grandmother was Army, step father Marine. All my childhood I wanted to be a Marine but then I decided to be a little wild and by the time I wanted to join I was too old for the Corp and went Army.
Thank you! I am still getting lots of use out of this and even doing some more modifications making it more flexible. Having the four unique sections makes it easier to do isolated modifications without taking the entire thing apart.
Configurable is key. Life brings change and the ability to flex is key. +1 on the level trunk deck. Do you really need to secure the legs in place with the allen screws? Won't the downward pull of the turnbuckles just hold them in place? TYVM
Valid quesiton. It is handy when (re)moving a section to NOT have the legs fall out. That is annoying, especially in an angled driveway having to chase the pipe as it rolls down the driveway. With that said, the legs are secured from the weight and turn buckles alone.
"Woodworking, metal working, like my old man did it? That didn't carry on with me. I got more into computers..." Can relate. Love this build, and definitely will be considering a version of it when I get my Rivain R2. Did you consider using legs that could fold instead of detach? I also noticed that your lights could be placed under the platform(?) boards instead of the frame(?) boards and would give you just a 'little' more clearance underneath.
Wow! Ingenius!!!! Great design, and construction to say the least! You also have a way with words; articulate and concise without a lot of other jibberish. WELL DONE! I also have a 23 ORP 4Runner.
As someone who grew up with a speed impediment and does have a tendency to ramble, this really made my day. Thank you! I love my ORP. I know it's not the most up to date vehicle on the road, but I don't care. It's the first vehicle I owned that fits me so well.
Great system. Thanks for sharing. I have the 4rnr with the sliding tray. Still not flat enough to sleep. I need all the length, to getting up above the seat bottoms is preferred.
Thanks for sharing. I guessed the sliding platform seemed like it would “flatter” but sounds like it isn’t as flat as I assumed. My CR-V was perfectly flat and I kind of miss that. I know my design would probably not work with the tray because of the middle legs. But maybe someone with more skills can modify the design somehow to make it work.
Wow I'm very impressed with this setup with so many different options. Well done!!! I have the same 4Runner so looking for different ideas. Thanks subbed to your channel.
Thanks. I don’t do a lot of 4Runner content. Has some follow up videos for mods to the platform. Maybe sometime I will do a version 2, but haven’t designed a new version yet
Fantastic. Thank you so much for this: Very intelligent design, thoughtful commentary, all with links and schematics! Couldn't ask for more. Two questions (for you, Knee Payne, or anyone who knows): (1) How might the dimensions change for a 2005 4th gen 4Runner? (2) Presuming they exist in desired heights, would fold-up legs work? Probably not adjustable, and probably not as sturdy as flanges with pipes,. But would offer convenient and tool-less up/down operation. Thanks again. Really appreciate your efforts and generous sharing.
I don't have much knowledge of 4th gens. I did look into some telescoping legs, but the ones I found seemed to be questionable when it came to reliably holding weight. I've made modifications since this video and those videos can be found in this playlist ruclips.net/video/rEYQ7wSWcko/видео.html I also have updated schematics for my most recent mod, tho one commented pointed out a possible measurement error that I still need to look into
It’s worked well. Now that I have used this for a while I feel I should have something similar between the front and back sections. May do a version 2 but have a lot to think about before I start cutting
This is the best design I've seen and just what I'm looking for! I love that you made design plans. I have a long road trip coming up and am going to try to make this before I leave
One small thing I’ve changed is the center front leg had an extra inch or so cut off. I was shifting the whole platform over so it wouldn’t sit on the hump on the floorboard, but that was sort of a pain and since cutting down the center leg it’s been better
I’ll have to look again at the plans and remember how I had the store cut it. I had them cut two sections out and I had to refine it at home (the intersecting tabs) with a hand saw
So the rear/trunk sections were cut from the 4x8. One section cut at 34”x28”. The second was cut 30”x34” A 4x8 will give me overall 48”x96” which is plenty for the trunk platform. The back seat (front) section was cut from a 2x4 but as I explained in the video it was a couple inches shy to support the tab so I had to do some hacky patch work to compensate. Heading out soon myself for two weeks on the road and will be putting this build thru its biggest stress yet
God !!!! you nailed it!! Are making those for sale mr??? I got a overland trailer with a rooftnet that would be perfect for those days when is so windy and i cant use it !!! Let me know if,!!! Thanks !!! Best one out there !!!
Just got back from two weeks on the road using this. It worked out quite well! Only real issue I had was getting the seats back in was a hassle, but that had nothing to do with the actual platform
I think shipping it alone would be very expensive and cost prohibitive. You may be able to find someone local that could do it with the blueprints provided.
but what do you put down on top of that to sleep on / type of mattress? after that on, seems like it’d be pretty tight height-wise. but cool concept w mobility.
Love the modular design! Would have never guessed you don’t regularly build stuff until you mentioned your 4“ lumber was actually 3.5“ 😂. Great job man! I like that shelf too, where did you get that from?
The modularity has also been good for small maintenance. Being able to remove only the section that I need to work on and not the entire thing. I grew up metalworking with my dad and have always been used to everything being more accurate when it came to sizes and dimensions. I built everything on computer in 3D first and was very meticulous. This attention to detail doesn't transfer over to lumber very well and it sort of messed with my planning. Lessons learned. This is the trunk shelf I picked up www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09STT2GVZ There are other manufacturers that make something similar but are a lot more money. Some boast using stainless steel and that theres can support the weight of a person. My thoughts on that are 1) its heavier and adds more weight to the back and 2) why would I try stuffing a person up there? The aluminum one that I got has been fine. It does not hold anything heavy and better priced. I get loads of use out of mine. With the platform and sleeping pad, my legs still fit and I can manage to sleep on my side. It does take away from vertical clearance in the back but I feel the trade-off for storing smaller items is worth it. On road trips, one side would have food items, the middle is for various accessories, and the opposite end I put a Jackery 300 that charges my camera batteries and phone (while sleeping). And the panels over the windows hold knives, tools, blankets, paper towels, etc.
Very cool. Thx! Yeah I would prefer aluminum over steel as well. For me, I really want to maximize head room so a lower platform with storage above (only at the feet obviously) would be ideal. I’ve got all winter to think and plan! Thx again!
The pipes don't weigh that much. When lifting up any of the individual sections, I do not notice a difference with or without the legs. Additionally, tightening the bolt down on the flanges may damage the wood over time. I checked the specifications of the piping I used www.lowes.com/pd/SteelTek-3-4-in-x-Silver-Black-Steel-Structural-Pipe-Fitting-Nipple/1000421999 It lists the weight of the entire 72" long product at 0.5644
10' of this pipe weighs 1.8 So, depending how much of this pipe you use it could add upwards of 2 more pounds to your entire set up. www.lowes.com/pd/SteelTek-3-4-in-x-10ft-Black-Steel-Structural-Pipe-Plain-End-SCH30/1000462001
Love the concept and the design!! By chance do you have a new (updated) link for the Schematics? The Google drive link seems to not work. Thanks in advance! Great job!!
Does this allow your pillow to go over the rear folded seats? I’m looking for an elevated platform that will fit my wife and I that are over 5”10 comfortably
It's not perfectly flush but the pillow can go over the folded seats. I'm 5'8" and this has worked well for me. I read your comment while making another short video while trying to modify one of the sections and made a quick response to your comment there ruclips.net/video/6wmUJuJpzj8/видео.html
Thanks. That’s a name I hadn’t heard in a while. Had to look him up to see if he’s still around (thankfully he is). I used to work in animation and would do lots of temp voices for characters but I never got my SAG card and never got into full time V/O work. I thought about when I got sick of corporate jobs, but I have friends who have been struggling for years as V/O artists and that grass isn’t always greener on that side. Some people hit it big and do really well. But it’s an extremely competitive line of work
Thanks for watching. I made a follow-up video with a couple notes about this platform after using it for a few months. Overall, it still works well for me. Even the dogs love it (easier to hang their heads out the window)
I have considered using the 3/4 setup and creating a backseat office. I instead found myself using the 3/4 setup to make room for the fridge. Might be re-working the whole setup a bit more for this upcoming season.
I put down a 2 inch egg crate foam, then an inflatable camping mattress that adds a few more inches. I would not recommend having the platform much higher than it is in this video. You have to account for probably ~4 more inches of padding for sleeping. I think making the platform any higher would make it unusable. I am going to cut an extra set of shorter legs for when I don't need the platform as high. But when I am bringing my pelican case, I usually keep it on the tallest set of legs.
It's a shelf that connects to the molle panels, which are the panels that cover the back side windows. I get loads of use out of it www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09STT2GVZ
The shelf and molle panels? Molle panels cover the side windows and support the shelf. They're easy to find for certain types of vehicles, but I am not sure about yours. This is what I have (and I get heavy use out of it) www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09STT2GVZ/
This video should explain how turnbuckles work ruclips.net/video/3aAdtsD9V94/видео.html The “Y” formation is because two turn buckles from two sections share one d-ring
Better to have a bigger fout due to to much weight on the small spot [the foot] what as i already can see is resulting in a dent [or what you want to call it] in the rubber mat/so damagint it I gues
It’s a tight fit but two of us lived out of this for two weeks while exploring Utah. I frequently take trips with my dogs and manage quite nicely. If you want to sit up and work on a laptop, then it’s a problem
It’s more important to me to have storage for my gear. If I need to sit up - edit photos and video - I will use the 1) front passenger seat, or 2) use the three-quarter setup and use the back seat behind the driver seat, or 3) or use the half setup.
Thank you! I really do love my platform. I get so many uses of the various configurations on almost a daily basis. Such a massive return on investment.
Great setup! What I would add for my build is... Look I to folding table legs (card table style) for the legs so you don't need the Allen wrench. More of aock in place thing. I'd also use black carpet to match the rear lower carpet. Thanka for sharing

Love this. Have to reduce it to mini size for my Renegade..but I think the pipes are perfect supports. Thankyou for showing it.
The pipes have served me well. I have been on the lookout for telescoping legs, but I haven't found a set that had acceptable weight support.
"Woodworking, metal working, like my old man did it? That didn't carry on with me. I got more into computers..."

Wow! You figured out solutions to all my what if’s! Great job.
It’s done well by me. I’ve made a handful of modifications since the original build to get a little more out of it
This is a next level sleeping platform. Thank you for sharing.
I'm having all sorts of ideas for what version 2 might be like.
Well Done !! I actually watched Nicks (nice shout out) and saved it, your 2.0 Version makes me happier and am inspired. Mahalo Nui
Hope you build something awesome!
Great system. Thanks for sharing. I have the 4rnr with the sliding tray. Still not flat enough to sleep. I need all the length, to getting up above the seat bottoms is preferred.

It's perfect!!!
Great video and design! I need to do the same thing in my 2022 Nissan Rogue. I love your support beam down the middle with the overlap.
Hope you can share your build when it’s done
Great innovation. I agree with the piping being more versatile.
Two questions (for you, Knee Payne, or anyone who knows):
(1) How might the dimensions change for a 2005 4th gen 4Runner?
(2) Presuming they exist in desired heights, would fold-up legs work? Probably not adjustable, and probably not as sturdy as flanges with pipes,. But would offer convenient and tool-less up/down operation.

Good build man, so far its one of the better ones I've seen. Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks! Been getting lots of great feedback from other viewers. Hope it helps inspire others to have better ideas.
Love the interlocking configuration. Very cool.
It’s worked well. Now that I have used this for a while I feel I should have something similar between the front and back sections. May do a version 2 but have a lot to think about before I start cutting
This is exactly what I've been looking for, thank you so much for sharing it!
Your welcome. Come back and share your build when complete, would love to see it!
This is the best design I've seen and just what I'm looking for! I love that you made design plans. I have a long road trip coming up and am going to try to make this before I leave
However I'm trying to figure out how you cut the 4'x8' sheet
One small thing I’ve changed is the center front leg had an extra inch or so cut off. I was shifting the whole platform over so it wouldn’t sit on the hump on the floorboard, but that was sort of a pain and since cutting down the center leg it’s been better
I’ll have to look again at the plans and remember how I had the store cut it. I had them cut two sections out and I had to refine it at home (the intersecting tabs) with a hand saw

No, I have not made them for sale. I am planning a version 2 of this prototype and hopefully get to it this winter.
You did a really excellent job.
Thanks. It's one of the few personal projects that I am truly proud of.
Excellent work I like how it can break up into smaller groups I like and will do 🤙
Oh I get so many uses of that. Currently running the 3/4 setup because it makes room for the portable car fridge.
Great job. Stealing the idea for my Volkswagen Multivan T7 🤙
Steal away. If it helps, I have a playlist of follow up videos on modifications and improvements that have been made based on real-world experience.
I love this. Looking for a similar idea. This is just perfect. Will adapt for my van. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Great versatile design, thanks for sharing.

I just hate shitty lumber day!😂. This is such a neat platform. I’m marking this down for when I get a 4runner for my overlanding trips someday.
Looking forward to seeing your setup. Always interesting to see what people come up with to fit their needs.
such a great video dude

Nice setup. Thinking of doing something on a smaller scale for the RAV4. Thoughts on using wooden dowels instead of piping to reduce weight?
The pipes don't weigh that much. When lifting up any of the individual sections, I do not notice a difference with or without the legs. Additionally, tightening the bolt down on the flanges may damage the wood over time.
I checked the specifications of the piping I used
www.lowes.com/pd/SteelTek-3-4-in-x-Silver-Black-Steel-Structural-Pipe-Fitting-Nipple/1000421999
It lists the weight of the entire 72" long product at 0.5644
10' of this pipe weighs 1.8
So, depending how much of this pipe you use it could add upwards of 2 more pounds to your entire set up.

Thanks for the video. Semper Fi Gunny Highway!!!
Hoorah!
You did a great job. Like you, I like options. Thank you for sharing
Thanks so much! And I've certainly put each option to use, and even invented one more.
Love the concept and the design!! By chance do you have a new (updated) link for the Schematics? The Google drive link seems to not work. Thanks in advance! Great job!!
Weird. I just checked it now and it worked fine for me. Are you getting an error?
NICE JOB !!!!!!!
At least I actually finished it!
Amazing.
Thank you from from KSA.
may be if you can remove the middle seats will give you more leg rooms. or storage space
I do remove them for long trips. But the pelican cases still fit better through the back ruclips.net/video/ezoLiSVBiKE/видео.html
I did something very similar to that with those pipes. It's now part of a dog run. It's too close to the roof.
Thanks for inspiration, I will be using your ideas in my build.
If you could find telescoping legs that is adjustable.
I have found telescoping legs but the quality was questionable. As was the supported weight. I hope adjustable legs will be version 2 of this build
Does this allow your pillow to go over the rear folded seats? I’m looking for an elevated platform that will fit my wife and I that are over 5”10 comfortably
It's not perfectly flush but the pillow can go over the folded seats. I'm 5'8" and this has worked well for me. I read your comment while making another short video while trying to modify one of the sections and made a quick response to your comment there

Great video. Did Gerald McRaney do your voice over? Uncanny similarity.
But it’s an extremely competitive line of work
This is very cool. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching. I made a follow-up video with a couple notes about this platform after using it for a few months. Overall, it still works well for me. Even the dogs love it (easier to hang their heads out the window)
I use 8:16 all the time in my SUV for a place to sit and not have to lay down.
I have considered using the 3/4 setup and creating a backseat office. I instead found myself using the 3/4 setup to make room for the fridge. Might be re-working the whole setup a bit more for this upcoming season.
what sort of sleeping pad or mattress you use.... how thick is it ?
I put down a 2 inch egg crate foam, then an inflatable camping mattress that adds a few more inches. I would not recommend having the platform much higher than it is in this video. You have to account for probably ~4 more inches of padding for sleeping. I think making the platform any higher would make it unusable. I am going to cut an extra set of shorter legs for when I don't need the platform as high. But when I am bringing my pelican case, I usually keep it on the tallest set of legs.
@@kneepayne thanks.
Wish I could open the schematic
You borrowed the pipe leg design from Nick. What about the sliding cargo tray like Nick has? Do you think your style platform could work?
No, because there is a center leg.
what is that hanger called attached to your third row
It's a shelf that connects to the molle panels, which are the panels that cover the back side windows. I get loads of use out of it www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09STT2GVZ
what is the 4x8 panel, MDF? or plywood
What is that at the ceiling?
The shelf and molle panels? Molle panels cover the side windows and support the shelf. They're easy to find for certain types of vehicles, but I am not sure about yours. This is what I have (and I get heavy use out of it) www.amazon.com/gp/product/B09STT2GVZ/
How did those turnbuckles work? The front side looks like "Y" in formation. How is it tensioning? Look like 10 pieces.
This video should explain how turnbuckles work ruclips.net/video/3aAdtsD9V94/видео.html
The “Y” formation is because two turn buckles from two sections share one d-ring
@@kneepayne thanks
Well thought masterpiece. Are you an engineer?
Former software engineer. Currently a cloud systems engineer. Never did any physical engineering (like mechanical or electrical)
Where can we find the pdf or purchase the plan?

It's in the very bottom of the description drive.google.com/file/d/1kU3sfGz1HFkOkUiZ2JUtLSyKunRRd-aN/view
Better to have a bigger fout due to to much weight on the small spot [the foot] what as i already can see is resulting in a dent [or what you want to call it] in the rubber mat/so damagint it I gues
Thanks for the feedback ruclips.net/video/UW3329cUB4w/видео.html
It seems that after you add a mattress and bedding there would not be much room to fit comfortably
It’s a tight fit but two of us lived out of this for two weeks while exploring Utah. I frequently take trips with my dogs and manage quite nicely. If you want to sit up and work on a laptop, then it’s a problem
@@kneepayne That's what the front seat is for. Rah!
Is this for sale? I want to buy one!
Genius ❤
How tall are you?
I don't think I'd fit laying down. I'm 6'2"
5’8” and my photography partner is 5’2”
You take commissions?
the platform is too high, can't sit up at night right?
It’s more important to me to have storage for my gear. If I need to sit up - edit photos and video - I will use the 1) front passenger seat, or 2) use the three-quarter setup and use the back seat behind the driver seat, or 3) or use the half setup.
❤
I'm quite impressed by your accomplishment. Pat yourself at the back. Keep the videos coming.
Thank you! I really do love my platform. I get so many uses of the various configurations on almost a daily basis. Such a massive return on investment.
