I started making Mulligatawny in the 1970s, after discovering it in a Time-Life book. This mild curry soup has an interesting history and is easy to make (all in one pot). Great for winter.

I will appreciate my cheap celery in the future! I loved this soup, so rich and flavourful, thanks for sharing it with us

Yes, I never appreciated enough how cheap celery was before I moved here. One time, there was a small stand outside a shrine, and the guy was selling produce. He had a box full of celery stalks that weren't supermarket grade in size, so he was selling a large bundle for ¥100 (about $1) so I bought a huge bunch and made creamed celery.

I think I have had something like this before. Can't remember what it was called way back then, but now, I know how to make it. Cheers. 😉🥂

This was a surprise. I had some Mulligatawny Soup in the past and didn't like it one bit. But this is not what I had. Now I don't know what that soup was - but this looks very good and easy to make. I just need some chicken and I have everything else. Will try it this week as it looks like just the right thing to go with cold weather!

Maybe was mis-labeled. This is basically the same Mulligatawny soup I've been making for decades.

One from the Kuma's Kitchen recipe archives. Evolves over time. Celery ain't cheap in Japan😲 The addition of the apple is really interesting. 🍎😋👍 Plus I hear Mulligatawny and I think of that Seinfeld episode 😂 No Soup for you!

I'm a person of Tamil descendant, and I remember reading about the adoption of many Tamil names for things like this. It's cool to see you know about it too!

I guess the correct Tamil pronunciation is "Milaghu thani" where the first word is pepper and the second is water, and was then anglicized.

Didn't use to know about it when I first made Mulligatawny, but learned once there was Internet.

A tip for this recipe is to also add a bayleaf!
By the way, what apples did you use? I used Royal Gala, which might not have been ideal..

Kevin, this soup looks great. I will make it. Are there various types of curry powder? Which one did you use? I will mail some celery to you. 😀

    • @KumasKitchen

I just use a normal yellow curry powder. Nothing too powerful. I always kept this recipe mild, so even my kids liked it.
