Good advice, thank you.
Thanks for your positive feedback Birdy, much appreciated. Regards, Rick@Smartseal
Exceptional video. We've always paid a company to seal our pavers, but it costs around $1,200 to have them do it. I haven't priced the sand and the sealer yet, but I'm sure that it'll cost about 25% to do it ourselves, and thanks to this video, I'm confident that it'll be no problem. Thanks.
Thanks for your positive feedback Shep, much appreciated! Regards, Rick@Smartseal

Great video and advice-thanks.
I have done my driveway twice and found that the sealer made the bricks very slippery when wet or icy. ( I live in Canada).
I always add a "slip protectant" to the mix to prevent this. The product I use is called "Shark Grip"- it's a fine sand like product that provides grip when walking on the rainy or icy surface.
Thanks for your positive feedback and info regarding the anti-slip additive. Much appreciated. Regards, Josh@Smartseal
Nice one bud
Thanks for your comment Mike. Regards, Rick@Smartseal

What type of roller can I use to apply the sealer as I have different types and piles of roller sleeve? Excellent video with detailed instructions. Many thanks.
Thanks for your feedback Emesee, we would recommend use of a medium pile roller sleeve. Regards, Rick@Smartseal
Thanks for the video , is it a idea to use sand and sealer first if I am painting the brick patio drive way or use the sand and sealer after paiting it as I am painting it black shown in your video
Hello Mehfooz, if you are thinking of re-colouring your block paving, it is best to follow the steps in this video

just want to ask how much pressure in PSI / bar you used to clean?
Thanks Sagor, the machine used in the video is 250 bar. Regards, Rick@Smartseal
Very helpful video. Just a question of what the time delay is between the first and second coat? Thanks
Hello, Thanks for your comment, normally around 2 hours between coats. Regards, George@Smartseal
Sorry if it has already been asked in the 103 comments but after applying the drive clean and leaving for the hour is an aggressive pressure wash needed or just a quick blast? Good video and informative thank you. Drive clean is on it's way to me for when boredom sets in over the Christmas break
Hello Peter, it all depends on the condition of the paving, if it is in poor condition, leaving the driveway cleaner on for two-three hours should make it easier to clean. After that, the main requirement of the pressure washer should generally be just to take the muck out of the joints. Hope that helps. Regards, Nigel@Smartseal
Outstanding video. I gained so much knowledge about paver sealing. I am confident to hire a licensed contractor and ask all the right questions. I live in Arizona. Is there a sealant with a high UV rating?
Thanks for your comments Linda. Most high quality acrylic sealers are not adversely affected by UV light. I am not aware of a 'high rating' standard you could look out for. Regards, Josh@Smartseal
i ve never done any kind of sealing before so need some advice please. on my block paving there are some small patches where I can see small puddles forming when it rains and after about 20 minutes they soak into the pavings. so do you sell sealers that would still allow water to soak through the block pavings. the last thing I really want is to seal my block pavings and when it rains I have puddles. i would be greatful for your advice. thnx
Hello Hasnain, the puddles will be forming because either the paving is uneven in these areas, or the 'falls' were not set correctly when the paving was originally laid. These are issues with the paving itself and should be addressed prior to sealing. Very little water actually soaks through the paving or the joints themselves. After only a small amount of rain, the sand between the joints and sand under the pavers would become saturated, allowing no further moisture to permeate through. Sealers by their very nature are 'repellents' and are not permeable. Hope that helps. Regards, Nigel@Smartseal
Hi Nigel, good video, informative and at your viewers, not down to them, well done. Do you supply to the Isle of Man and who to, please?
Thanks for your comments Stephen, much appreciated. We can and have shipped products direct to customers on the Isle of Man,
but as you are probably aware, delivery costs can be an issue. If you want to get in touch with me directly through the Smartseal website, we can discuss what you have in mind and work out prices from there. Hope that helps. Regards, Nigel Blake
Hi very informative video…will the sealant dry when applied on blocked driveway in the UK in November/ December damp cold months or best to wait for summer for long lasting sealant dry? Please advice
Hello Jan, thanks for your positive feedback. We would certainly advise waiting until late Spring or Summer before applying the sealer. The weather is generally to damp and cold from October onwards. Hope that helps. Jake@Smartseal
@@SmartsealUk thank you very much
What can you recommend for light driveway sealers. Laid very light granite pavers on the driveway with dark border. Looks beautiful but getting tire marks all over it and now looks a mess :( going to wash the tire marks off However thinking of getting a dealer which I hope will stop the tyre marks if possible!
Please get in touch direct, or send us some pictures. If it is the pavers I believe you are describing, there will be a couple of options of sealer to help protect your driveway. Regards, Nigel@Smartseal
Bravo for wearing proper mask and eye protection. So many contractors who make these sorts of videos don't, even if they do this professionally.
Thank you for your comment June. Regards, George@Smartseal
Hi how powerful should the pressure washer be to clean the paving?
Hi Amardeep, you can clean block paving properly with any decent DIY pressure washer. Just recognise if the pressure washer is not very powerful, it will take you longer. By using a pre-treatment for the dirt/moss/algae/weeds/pollutants, the whole process will be a lot quicker, easier and more effective. Hope that helps! Regards, Nigel@Smartseal
Great Video, do you sell your products in Switzerland
Hi Melati, thanks for your comments, sorry we only currently deliver throughout the UK & Ireland
Can you advise on the weather? I was told it needs three weeks of no rain after sealing to dry!! In Wales we have no chance of that!!
Hi David, thanks for your question, it is covered on the video. Generally in decent weather between April-October, I would allow roughly a week between cleaning and sealing. This does not mean it has to be totally dry for 7 days, you just want a good percentage of that period to be decent drying conditions. Hope that helps.
Smartseal UK Ltd thanks mate.
So, no need to clean the newly installed pavers (bottom part of the driveway) other than maybe sweeping or a leaf blower?
That's correct. If pavers are newly installed and sanded, good chance a some of the sand will congeal down after the 1st coat, so make sure to 'top up' those joints before 2nd coat. Hope that helps!
Hi there great video love how you broke down how many litres per square meter, was just wondering roughly how much sand per square meter you would use
Hi Chris, thanks for your comments. If you are following the guidance in the video and cleaning the joints to approximately 20mm , 1 bag of kiln dried sand should cover approximately 20m2 . Hope that helps Andrew@Smartseal
@@SmartsealUk that's great help thanks alot and thanks for the fast reply 👌

My block driveway is constantly growing large weeds, I've tried brushing in sand and it doesn't stop this. Will this sealant stop this ?
Hello Cheri, thanks for your question. Applied correctly, the sealer will set the jointing sand rock solid. This is the best way of inhibiting weed growth. Hope that helps, George@Smartseal
Hi , just a question please. First I need to put the sealer then sand and last sealer again or just the sand then the sealer and olso how long to apply the sand if first after the sealer ?
Regards
Hi Julian, If you are only just using clear sealer, you'd want to put fresh sand in and then seal with two coats. If you're planning on using the block magic, you'd have to use that first, sand and then seal on top with one coat of clear sealer. I hope this answers your question.
Sand, then sealer Julien, 2nd coat around 2 hours later, dependent on temperature.
Smartseal UK Ltd thanks for your time
We get snow up here in Canada. Will the sealer cause the pavers to be a slip hazard?
Hello Ron, hi to Canada, if two coats of sealer are applied to this type of paver, it will not adversely affect the slip resistance of the surface. Hope that helps. George@Smartseal
Well made video but I have a couple of questions - Are you not doing a hypo treatment on this before resanding? Also, our clients would almost certainly take issue with the final results where the bricks are considerably duller than before. Can you, therefore, tell me what the benefits of this are over a biocide post-treatment (which would be much much cheaper)?
Hello, thanks for your questions. If a secondary cleaner as well as water (not always necessary) is required, in the video we are using our DriveClean Xtreme product. Application of the sealer leaves them looking clean and damp/wet, enhancing the original colours. The sealer is UV and water resistant, so it protects against colour loss and infestation of algae and lichen (which makes the blocks look dirty) Applied correctly the sanded joints will also be 'solid' preventing/reducing weed growth. Regards Rick@Smartseal
Hi, once fully sealed how long approximately will it last until needs doing again
If you did nothing else Sean, you would still know you are getting benefits from the sealer 6-8 years later. If you wanted to keep the surface in optimum condition, we would recommend a top up coat of sealer, on average every 3 years. Hope that helps, George@Smartseal
How much sand and sealer did he use for that 2000 sq ft driveway? I have the exact same driveway..
2000 sq ft = 185 m2 . If the work is carried out as per video, you would require 6 x 25L of sealer for two good coats and 9 or 10 bags of kiln dried sand if the the drive has been cleaned correctly, hope that helps. Rick@Smartseal
whats the best way to get the extra sand off the patio that i just did the paver joints on ? I'm not very good at this.
Hi Liz, is the sand bonded to your patio in some way, so that it cannot be just swept away? Regards, Rick@Smartseal
@@SmartsealUk it can be swept away but its like i keep sweeping and sweeping and sweaping and still there. LOL I'm always doing something wrong .
Does the drive remain permeable with the sealer? Sorry if I missed if you said so.
The main question clients ask me is what’s the difference between Marshalls and Bradstone or similar cost blocks -drives I did 15 years ago in Marshalls seem to have held their colour better and haven’t become as stony on the surface as Bradstone have. I’m guessing this sealer prolongs the colour of the blocks too?
Hi James, Thanks for your questions.
I am sure you are aware there is a big difference between ‘permeable’ block paving and standard ‘porous’ block paving. Permeable block paving relies predominately on drainage between the joints and through the porous sub-base. ‘Standard’ or ‘normal’ porous block paving to drain correctly, relies on the water running off the surface. This is why setting out the ‘falls’ correctly when the pavers are laid is so important. With this in mind, the application of sealer will not significantly change the ability of either surface to displace water.
In terms of different performance between Marshalls and Bradstone blocks, that is a question best asked to those companies. Certainly application of a UV sunlight resistant sealer will protect the blocks from loss of colour. The film of protective resin on the surface of the blocks will also help reduce the surface wear of the pavers. Remember, as mentioned in the video, overuse of a pressure washer could have caused the accelerated surface wear of the Bradstone pavers.
Hope that helps, Regards, Nigel@Smartseal
Smartseal UK Ltd Ok thanks. The aesthetic surface wear is just my observation of drives I’ve laid and pretty sure they’ve not been jetwashed ever so the weather and UV degrading is the only real factor I know of. I always try to sell the marshalls as for not a lot more they’ll get a longer lasting prettier drive. A few have asked me to seal them so just looking into it. Great video and good tips, thanks. 👍
A funny scary story for you- many moons ago a mate of mine was labouring for a rogue company (probably pikies) he saw them sell the client a sealed driveway for £250. They poured a pint of milk into a bucket of water and with a mop they covered the drive. (Using the client’s mop) 🙈
No problem James, if you require any more help or advice, please get in touch. Regards, Nigel
Smartseal UK Ltd Cheers Nigel 👍
its like your good at maths but even better at making videos, !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol keep up the good work.
Wow at 25 seconds the old bricks and drain cover magically all move!
And a pattern appears in the middle. That really is magic stuff
Hi, Would you recommend using sand that sets hard?
Hello, thanks for your question. If the sealer featured in the video is used correctly, it will set the sand solid. In this scenario the sand that sets hard (which costs a lot more than normail kiln dried sand) would not be required. Hope that helps. Rick@Smartseal
Hi, Yes, a good swift reply, thank you. 😁
No problem. @@87114
Are the sealed joints still water permeable? Drainage is a problem at times in my situation
Once it starts raining, unless you have permeable paving, the sanded joints would soon become saturated with water and become naturally non-permeable. If the block paving has been laid correctly, the falls and drainage installed (if required) should take care of excess water. Once sealed, no, the joints will set solid and would not be permeable. Hope that helps. George@Smartseal
@@SmartsealUk crushed stone base on grade, no pavement
What did you charge per sqft before sealer
About £3 per m2 just to clean and resand with no sealer Robert. Regards, Nigel@Smartseal
How much is it for the patio/black spot clean
Hello Paul, 5L concentrate is currently £31.95 Regards, George@Smartseal
Just the sealant alone costs £345, (£115 per 25l bucket but you need 3 of them to fill your average driveway such as this). My god.
How much did the homeowner spend on the Paver Driveway? Allot of Money. It takes allot of money to take care of expensive things.
That was 2 years ago. Now it’s £140 per 25l bucket. Think I’ll just keep pressure washing and re-sanding every couple of years.
What would you do differently if there were a pavement ant problem?
Hi Dick, thanks for your question. I would not do anything different. If the joints are cleaned properly and the sealer is applied in the right ratio's the jointing sand will become rock solid. In my experience, this will keep the ants at bay for a considerable period of time. Hope that helps! Nigel@Smartseal
@@SmartsealUk Thank you so much for your quick reply. Appreciate your knowledge and advice very much!
No problem, thanks for your positive feedback, much appreciated!@@Aiden-yx9ht
@@SmartsealUk I also notice you use Kiln-Dried sand, does this work the same as a water activated polymeric sand?
Also on the directions of the sealer I have it says to apply two thin coats instead of a single heavy coat. It mentions there's a risk of "bubbling and blisters", do you you think I can ignore this and go with your method of application?
The thin coats are when you are sealing Imprinted Concrete, for block paving, with sanded joints, apply as per video. Hope that helps.@@Aiden-yx9ht
Hi what mask would you recommend
You should wear a P3 mask that is resistant to solvents Karl. Regards, George@Smartseal
Where do I buy this product?
You can purchase from our main website www.smartseal.co.uk/
I prefer to just use hot water to clearn, and a lot more eco-friendly too...this looks like pure chemicals which should be a no-no nowadays (but please correct me if I'm wrong of course)
Certainly, if practical, hot water works very well J and use of chemicals should be restricted. The key if you are cleaning with a product such as DriveClean Xtreme, is that when rinsing off, you use copious amounts of water. This ensures that any product filtering into the ground or water course is so dilute, it will not cause harm. For your reference the product featured is licenced by the HSE (health and safety executive) Regards, Rick@Smartseal

About durability don't know. Time will tell.
If you want to get rid of the moss and dirt use Sodium Hypochlorite 20L drum for £11.30, very very cheap. My driveway never looked so clean. Because of the quantity you're getting it won't break the bank.
