I had no idea that you used something other than sand on driveways. They say you learn something new every day. You taught this old girl something new. You, as usual, did a fabulous job. It is your work ethic and attention detail that makes your services so superior. Well done, Nick. Thanks for sharing. 👍🏼👍🏼
Very nice, as usual. I also have permeable hardscape in my yard. It prevents the huge puddles formed from the rain; and allows the water to soak into the soil rather than into the street and eventually the ocean. However, mine has sand rather than gravel. Mind you, I also have something like a French drain under the pavers. One drawback of such a surface is the debris that doesn’t wash away with the flow of the water. Oh well. Southern California needs the water to go back into the earth rather than the ocean. I applaud your customers.
Ah, you brought us something new and completely different, Nick! Grit instead of sand! I really like that idea. Seems much cleaner and less messy overall. In a big rain, especially with pooling, the grit would probably stay in place better than sand, especially on a drive that isn't level and has a slope. Interesting that they had a mix. You did a fantastic job of cleaning and making it all look brand new and perfect, as you do. You show consistently reliable excellence in your work on every job. I think my favorite part is where you take us through the job, showing us the things you take into account and plan for before even considering beginning the actual work. I love watching you think it through to get your plan set to deliver the best job, properly done, that you can. You never disappoint. Have a beautiful week, Nick! 🩵💧🩵
Excellent job as ever Nick. I have to say, that looks like a lot more work than a regular driveway! Thanks very much for the upload, have a great week :)
Well done Nick and job was performed very detailed . All steps very clear . Keep going such quality- you will have a lot of happy customers. Thank you for sharing.
Awesome work! Everything looks beautiful. It shows that you put a lot of effort and pride into doing excellent work. Thank you also for the education regarding block paving, it helps with understanding the different cleaning and sanding methods.
That was interesting Nick. I think I like the look of pavers with sand. It seems to me grit would always be picked up by anything go over the bricks. Very long driveway that is split in two. And how generous is that one homeowner paying for it all! Have a good week!
Mad Lad Leatherpaws at it again with the Hypo and scrubbing brush this time, you are savage mate! 🙉Excellent vid! Really surprising how much gubbins came out from between the bricks on this one! Excellent job, as always! 💪 Best wishes 👍
Thank you for the links. A very interesting read. As someone looking to start out in the business I found it very informative. Every day's a school day!
Well, I really wasn't expecting to be shown a whole new topic. The underlying skill of laying this is impressive. But...all the things we've been learning to do....where do you push the water, how do you clean up muck, how many times do you rinse, the type of material brushed in and where you get it (looked also like less volume), even the problem with residual dust... are now done differently on this type. Wow. You were doing such a meticulous job on the hypo that when you said you had (small) some missed areas, I was surprised. Not surprised though if it was a result of not being able to see through all the dirty water or just some extra tenacious spots for some reason. Reading comments, I'm not convinced all people understood this was a different system and not just a choice of sand or granite grit.
I enjoy watching your work. Appreciate your explanations too. It helps to learn about your craft, Beautiful work! Best, Susanne from Thetford, Vermont.
Turned out beautiful! Aside from the crunching I think this would be better than sand and drain field? No maintenance to clear drains… of course soaking In probably helps seeds germinate and grow… I guess nothing is perfect 😂
Nick, nice to see something very different. Quite the process to go through. Personally I would think you're more likely to track the gravel bits all over, including inside the house versus the sand which settles in the pavers. Is my thought valid or an overactive imagination?
If it's not brushed and settled into the brickwork properly, maybe; I imagine that sand will cling more, but the grit might be more likely to get caught in the treads of your shoes. Feels like they both have their points.
Living in a place where it's all sand and no soil, I can tell you sand is fine and sticks to everything - I'm constantly sweeping up sand. I used to live in a place with 110 inches of snow every year and I used a lot of grit on my walkways and steps. It mostly just fell off and didn't really get tracked in because it's heavier. But in my case, neither was settling between pavers so probably doesn't even apply! 😂
Hey LuAnn, many thanks. I think you're right, even though I had leaf blown the driveway to remove as much of the grit on top of the blocks as possible, I was still hearing it crunching as I was walking about, this seems to always happen when I clean this type of block paving. So a very valid thought indeed ❤️.
Oh I love the care you take in your work! I have been loving seeing brick drives, but this is new with the gravel? filler instead of the sand! I wonder if you prefer one over the other. I think I like the sanded, but is one better overall with wear etc.?
Nice job! It looked like quite the hard work. The water never puddled so much as usual driveways. Luckily it wasn as bad as playgrounds but it seemed hard to rinse off the chemicals. When you walked around the finished driveway I could hear the sound of stones from your shoes, I almost sounded like walking on gravel. Did you get stones into your shoe soles or is that the normal sound of walking on such a driveway? It wasn't good to see how deep the stones went between the blocks since there was hardly any color difference. Every time you kick your bags to get them open you remind me of anime assassins who have blades even in their shoe soles 😂 You are the first person I see opening the bags like that.
Sanded mine last weekend. Within a week much of it has washed out and spread out everywhere, and there are piles all over where worms have burrowed in/out of it. 😭
I did this exact job yesterday and I could tell the customer wasn't happy. Grit doesn't give that eye catching finish like sand does so I could tell that weighed a bit on his mind.
@@ReverseSweepExteriorCleaning You need to remind your customer that re-gritting or re-sanding has nothing to do with aesthetics. Each application has a purpose, permeable paving HAS to have grit and CANNOT be sanded or it ruins the drainage of the driveway. Standard block paving needs to be re-sanded to keep the blocks stable and in place. The sand may look pretty for a few months until it gets dirty again. But how it looks is completely irrelevant and has absolutely nothing to do with why it’s applied.
@PrestigeExternalCleaning yep, this was explained and thanks for the reassurance. For some people aesthetics is everything for the outlook of their overall home instead of practicality. Hadn't received a callback as of yet so hopefully that'll be okay. Thanks again and thanks for all that you do for the industry.
Where do you get your pressure washer hose from….the one that’s attached to the machine not the tap ? Any links to them would be appreciated…keep up the good work mate 😊
He explains briefly in the video. It's a different type of block paving designed to have grit in the joints. It's designed so water can travel between the blocks and into the ground rather than into a drain. 😊
Sodium hypochlorite loses the majority of its strength after roughly 1/2 hour of being in contact with organic matter. Yes it most definitely needs rinsing down so it’s not a danger to the public, customer, neighbours, pets, etc, etc.
Great video as usual. Can you tell me what percentage of Sodium Hypochlorite would you suggest I use on a slab patio with heavy black spot….. I’m up in Scotland or I would have got you to do it.
It’s had copious amounts of water on it, way more in a short space of time, than any rainfall would give. It’s just a little bit overwhelmed, don’t worry it’ll soon drain away
If you filled the gaps with sand instead of the grit gravel wouldn't it still drain through ok. The gravel looks like it would move and track around a fair bit compared to the sand.
Polymeric sand is 3-4 times more expensive than kiln dried sand, takes longer to apply, and doesn't live up to the hype, so it's not very popular in the UK. No I never apply sealer. I personally feel it's for the most part, a waste of time and not good value for money. This type of paving can't be sealed anyway, as it would prevent it from draining properly.
Been watching your vids for months now pal I’m about to get into it myself but not quite sure to go for 15 or 21 as a start as they say buy cheap buy twice if you have a few pointers could I pm you on Facebook If you don’t mind ??? Cheers Lee

Nice Job as usual Nick. In NZ we mainly use paving sand or sand with silicone in in to stabilize pavers
Interesting, thanks Andrew 👍

Thanks so much 🤝
Do you prefer grit over sand since it doesn’t need to be dry? Or is it more work because it needs rinsing? Lovely job as usual Nick ❤
Thanks Rebecca, it's a good question. I think I prefer sand, the grit is heavier to push along, and the rinsing is a bit of a pain 😍
I love brick and stone work and this looks amazing.
Many thanks 😊

Hey Col, nice one mate 😍
Drainage Id prefer grit gravel regardless of drainage pipes. Possibly easier to maintain ?? Travis Perk sells tonnes of it. Thanks for sharing Nick !
Thanks mate 👍
Can you use horticultural potting grit for filling the gaps too?
That turned out so nice Nick. Such a difference. Is the gravel any harder to spread than the sand?
Many thanks Nancy. Good question, yes it is 👍

Do you need to rinse the Algaecide off?
Surely it would be better to leave it on to continue working until it loses its efficacy?
