Stripers Migration - Where & When Do They Come (CA Delta)?

  • Where do the stripers go? In the California Delta the striped bass make it their home in the fall thru winter. Watch this video and learn the migration of the stripers. I’ve been following these fish all my life as I have caught them in the ocean in Pacifica, the SF Bay, Delta and up in the Sacramento and Feather Rivers. Stripers used to travel all the way to Colusa to spawn but in the last ten years with the drought they don’t go that far up. I would say most of my biggest stripers are caught in the winter.

    Fished the port of sac on Sunday. A lot of fish in there now. A cargo ship left the port at sunrise and of course killed the bite for about 2 hours. Then the tide turned and the fish started biting. 25" was our biggest.

      Yes I heard the stripers were in the port. When the ships come and go it turns off the fish bite.

    Alan, I went out Sunday and my boat control was not optimal to keep presentation vertical. I was battling current that is not just as easy as it would seem. Do you have any tips other than more practice? Thanks for taking the time to do these learning videos!

    • @AlanFong
      @AlanFong  8 месяцев назад +2

      Always keep you boat heading into current and with a electric trolling motor on the bow really helps. You should only be taping it on once in awhile to keep line vertical. If it doesn't stay vertical then use a heavier spoon. Now I'm using a 2oz spoon in 25-30 ft. If tide ripping might go to a 3oz to stay vertical.

      The stripers are on the move and seem to stay in one area for a few days and then they move. Some time returning in the same area if there food.Watch the tides as they are a big factor

    • @user-lz3ns4mf8e
      @user-lz3ns4mf8e 8 месяцев назад

      @AlanFong how many ft of movement on tides would you recommend? I used to fish the smaller tide movements as the bigger tides would make the water murky. But lately it seems like you need more movement while also needing clear water. Thinking of launching rio vista again this Saturday 12/16. Forecast shows 64⁰ so I'm hoping it brings the water temp up a couple notches. Last weekend the water temp dropped for sure.

    • @AlanFong
      @AlanFong  8 месяцев назад

      The stripers like the moving tides just knowing where to go. On high outgoing tide I like fishing big flats like in 2-4 ft water n weeds. Slower tides I'll spoon the breaks in 25-30 ft

      Heading out again this Saturday 12/16. I'll try working a glide near the weeds if the jig doesn't work.
      Also gonna drift something live and see how they respond. Hoping the water temps are up a bit. Saturday is supposed to be warmer.

    When the stripers come in the fall where do they go? Do they just relax in the delta and stay until the spawn?

    • @AlanFong
      @AlanFong  24 дня назад

      Normally they start moving into the delta in Sept and stay feeding until they go up river to spawn. They feed real heavily during this time. Spooning on breaks in 20-35 ft and on high tides I like fishing big weed flats. From Rio Vista to Liberty Island are my favorite areas
