It's amazing how they can get such a clear and predictable image from what looks like a blob of different colors. I wonder if the final image really is that predictable, though, and I also wonder if this technique is ever used in ceramics.
@@Angel-jt2pl I wonder if they use any of the same machinery, like perhaps the log rolling machine. I would imagine that would tear the clay up to much, though, because I think hot candy is probably a lot thicker and tougher than clay is.
@@Melissa0774 (RE: Log Rolling Machine) I mean... yes. That's true. But it's almost like saying "Perhaps they use a bandsaw to cut up the taffy. I would imagine that would tear the taffy up, too much, though, because I think wood is probably a lot thicker and tougher than hot candy" Meanwhile, both in ceramics and baking, you use a rolling device to make your medium into something flat and even. In baking, you would use a rolling pin. In ceramics, you'd use a specialized table-top tool called a slab roller. Different tools, for the same purpose, based on the different materials and scope.

Do they need to hurry up or will it remain soft and workable for quite some time ? Also, is it just food coloring or do the colors taste different too? Anyway, pretty cool how that big log becomes small candies in the end. :)
they need to hurry or the sugar will dry and when they are boiling the sugar they put the flavour in the sugar so the whole candy tastes the same just the colors are diffirent Hope this answers your question
I think they have a warming table so they can make the candy malleable again. I’ve seen videos of other candy makers and they have an area where they can bring the temp back up and keep the candy pliable so I assume this shop has one too. Also, one of the other candy makers said that everything tastes the same in the particular candy but different designs usually have different flavours.
@@BeeWhistler I don’t think so. All the warming table does is allow it to be pliable. Once it has cooled you can see how easy it is to break it. It becomes like glass and they chip these candy tubes and they break off like glass. I would imagine they make the candy as quickly as possible but not because it affects the quality of the candy but because they’ve got lots more to hand make.
That looks fascinating. I never thought of using a large hook like that for taffy pulling. We always used to do it with two people, which is why we seldom did taffy pulls. It must take a lot of muscles in the hands and arms. 😁👋🧡
Oh, I'll bet. I'm sure it's a bit easier than doing it with two people though, for a few different reasons. First of all? Angle. Second? Stability. Because the other "taffy puller" is a stable, wall-mounted hook, it means that the Taffy Puller can use repetitive motion, momentum and even gravity to assist in the taffy pull. You can see it when he throws the taffy over the hook. It's a quick flick of the wrist and a downward pull. And because of that downward angle, it means that the Taffy Puller can use their full weight, in a controlled manner. Honestly, kinda brilliant... and all it took was about 25 dollars worth of materials.
The hooks are as old as the craft of handmade candy itself .. I'm surprised you didn't know about it. To me the pulling on the hook is THE image of candy making.
@@KeaveMind You're right, they make perfect sense, but we only ever tried making taffy or hard candies once or twice at home. I'm sure they are part of normal equipment in a confectioners shop or in a candy factory. 😁😁👋👋💖💖
