      @@Thatonerandomguy1331 Gladly. A train stopped and idling for a couple of hours is one thing, but idling for many hours and days in a residential area is a big no no. If they were complaining about passing trains and train horns, I'd have little to no sympathy for them, but idling locomotives in summer, especially EMD two stroke engines, for days at a time, is bad railroading. What's going on? Not enough available crews? Yard congested? That's the railroad's responsibility to remedy, and local residents should not be subjected to fumes from engines idling for multiple days in a row. If the train is gonna be parked for extended periods of time, tie it down, shut off the power, lock up the units. Not hard.

      @@Belleville197 most newer Diesel locomotives have an automatic start/stop system to cut down on idling but even still at least one locomotive has to stay running to provide air for the trainline, otherwise if the air supply is lost for hours then when a crew does come to move the train they instead have to restart the locomotive and rebuild the air and then the conductor will need to walk the entire train to reinspect and test the air brakes. When a train is parked not only are the air brakes set but also several of the freight cars and locomotives have hand brakes applied, as a sort of parking brake. As after all anybody who works for a railroad knows you don't just rely in just the air brakes to hold a train.

    One of the reasons the trains idle when connected to a long train is to keep air in the brake reservoirs to operate the brakes. Some modern engines have an auto start/stop system that automatically starts the engine if the air pressure reaches below a certain point, that way they can run the air compressor to get sufficient air back in the line for the brake system. The auto start system will often restart the locomotives every couple of minutes, which is why some railroads prefer to keep the engines idling since it can be more efficient than using all that engine power to re-crank the large motor over again to operate the air compressor.
    Sometimes you will see smaller railroads with limited budgets idle their locomotives for long amounts of time too. Usually the reasoning behind those railroads are that the batteries in the locomotives may be bad, where turning off a locomotive could require a service truck to come out to jumpstart the locomotive which can cost time and money, along with a new battery system.
    The last reason which may be the most important during winter time, is that diesel engines don't like to warm up well in cold weather. To avoid damages to the motor, diesel engines need to be warmed up to operating temperature, otherwise operating them too soon could greatly decrease the life of the motor. So if they need to grab a locomotive quickly while confined to a small timeframe, having a locomotive turned off could put them out of luck.
    A future solution to this are hybrid locomotives that are purpose-built to start and shut off quickly. The downside, is that this type of locomotive is only generally used for yard switching, and a purpose built road locomotive like what you see in this news segment isn't made well enough to convince big railroads to buy them. Another downside are that smaller railroads usually don't have the budget to buy these locomotives unless they are bought used, and even then, the lifespan of these particular locomotives are questionable.

  • @usa_rail_productions
    @usa_rail_productions 2 месяца назад +1

    What people don't understand is that locomotives need to idle to keep a constant brake pressure so they don't start rolling away, and crew changes happen a lot in the Chicago area, which can take from 10 minutes to multiple days. Also, you can't just turn off a locomotive unless you want a runaway train. Yes, locomotive idle is very loud, especially when the air compressor turns on, and the fumes are very dangerous to the human body. But if you want to have food, gas, and other items, you need to keep the trains. You moved next to the railroad; it was there before you where born. How about you check out the area BEFORE you move in.

    I’ve lived around here a long time. So I know that was originally the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. Looked it up: the C&NW was founded in 1859. The railroad has been there much longer than any of these residents. Do you think this is the first time there has been congestion on that line? I highly doubt it, and at any rate I bet the air quality was worse when they used steam engines. Knowing something about real estate markets, I know those houses are cheaper because they are along the railroad. Anyone buying real estate should do a lot of due diligence first, as it’s a big commitment. If you swallow whatever lame story the real estate agent gives you about how the tracks aren’t really that bad because you want a cheap house and you don’t like the results, that’s on you. Making more environmentally friendly railroad engines is a good idea, but it’s not likely to happen in a hurry. They’ve got a long way to go to make electric cars work right. So something on this level seems many years or decades away. Maybe the railroad might be able to put filters on idling engines to reduce emissions. But even something comparatively simple like that would take a lot of development and testing. Bottom line is: people never want to take personal responsibility and this a perfect case study.

    Welcome to the world of PSR (known as Precision Scheduled Railroading), folks! Nowadays, trains run until they run out of rested crews, which is caused by the railroads furloughing crews to the point there's not enough people to keep the trains running on a consistent basis! This results in trains sitting (or as we call it on the Railroad, "tied down") for many hours, sometimes days, depending on when some of these trains are ordered, or a rested crew comes on duty. Also, because of PSR, trains are much longer and much slower than in years past, which further adds to the problem, and we're not even getting into the maintenance side of things, which is a whole other can of worms! Now granted, even 20, 30 years ago, before the PSR era, you would still have trains sitting for extended periods of time, its just not as frequent as it is now. All that being said, I do agree with some of the comments here that these people should have known what they were moving into, but hopefully, this explanation gives them a little insight into how railroads currently operate!

That said, there is a local initiative called CREATE that’s adding infrastructure (bridges, overpasses, tracks, signaling, etc.) to improve fluidity of the railroads through Chicago. It’s a program that’s been going on for 21 years and has expended billions of dollars doing community outreach, put many of its associates’ kids (and grandkids) through college and built a few things here and there.

    Diesel engines aren't like gas engines. They need to be kept warm, as diesel freezes at a higher temperature than gasoline. Plus, the air brakes on a long freight train can take over an hour to fully release. And if you knew what you were getting into, why not just move?

    what the resonance didn't realize is they bought next to train tracks they chose to buy those houses next to train tracks and yes those trains have to idle so that they can keep them ready to go they don't turn off trains a lot of times because it's safer to keep the airlines on those long trains fully intact yes let's turn those trains off yes but then again we could have an accident and so do we blame those residents when there's an accident?

  • @carolinarailfanning
    @carolinarailfanning 2 месяца назад

    Locomotives idle for long periods because starting a 12 or 16 cylinder engine the size of YOUR CAR is a long tedious process. It is more feasible to let the engine run and stay warm for when the train needs to move again.
    Also nice catch chopper 7 lol, CSXT1836 is a nice touch.

    Trains don't just idle for hours and hours on end; after a certain amount of time, the diesel engine will shut off automatically unless it is being used! It was all of their decisions to buy a house next to the railroad that was there long before them. It was their decision, and they can do something about it.
    Maybe try moving out of your house that you willingly chose to live right next to the tracks, and don't complain about the machines that are doing what they're supposed to be doing.

    This is normal where train yards are close. I guess they should have thought about purchasing property near train tracks. I understand their concerns but these issues come with the territory of living near train tracks especially near or in cities and near or close to train yards. I don’t think the train companies really care about these issues. So, good luck those who live near train tracks, I don’t think it will change!

    The public needs to complain to the railroads and, their owners, the hedge funds, about building shorter trains. That's one solution. For safety concerns at least one locomotive has to operate frequently. I don't know when these people were interviewed but, bad weather will slow operations which can cause a backup along the system which, did happen a few weeks ago. I believe the residents are exaggerating idle times to embellish their story. Those long idle times (days) were common around the mid 1990's when there was a company merger which slowed operations.

    It's kind of embarrassing that railfans in the comments act like the biggest NIMBY's, when you know people have a right to be concerned about the air they breathe, with or without the home their zoned in. So, loco's that idle for nigh a day and a half at other times, a few days, goes to show how frieght companies need a different level of regulation and cleaner rolling stock, instead of volcanos that pull 300% their dedicated capacity.
    Simply saying, the rails were here first bro, and justifying why locomotives are the most tedious to start up so idling is fair, or why PSR is the best bottleneck to freight schedules since sliced bread, does not challenge why you, a railfan, can appreciate what makes rail in America so special.
