Same, I'm constantly blasting this concert and Seattle 89. All 3 of my kiddos are well versed in my love for this band and their on stage presence. They also roll their eyes everytime I go to my garage to jam it out on the guitar.
I can't imagine playing to a crowd that you can't even physically see the end of. At a certain point they just fade into the fog. That moment between Lars and James at 19:36 where they are playing off of eachothers energy is insane. It's the acknowledgement that everything they'd been working at for 10 years finally paid off.
Instead of fog, I think that could be dust lifted into the air from the sheer amount of people moving around. I've been to a much smaller festival that had dirt fields and at the end of the night and the crowds had the same effect only it was at a smaller scale.

Seems no one talks about Jason how he exerted energy so much. The head banging and the head spining or helicopter stunt are incomparable. He's the power of the band at the time in my opinion.
Jason was one BADASS guy…. The energy he exerted on stage was mo match.. Head banging, helicopter, using the whole stage setup, backing vocals and filling in wherever james is not in place.. ultimate..!!
I'm a guitarist, and the biggest crowd I played for was about 400 people. I can't imagine playing to 1.6 million. Metallica is 100% an American band. One of the greatest!
I just can't fathom walking onto a stage and not being able to see where the crowd ends. I wouldn't have blamed them if they just stood there in awe for a couple minutes. Hetfields voice here is just rhe best I've ever heard.
Imagine being James, Lars, Kirk or Jason.........in front of that massive sea of people, head banging in unison to your music. Must have been a heady experience.
I was paying attention to their faces: they seemed to be absorbing everything, enjoying as much as they could. I think it´s a once in a lifetime event.
I saw somewhere where James said it was the most nervous they’d ever been before a show because the moment was bigger than music but that’s what brought everyone together was the music.
Did I see military helicopters hovering over the stadium? Kinda giving off a vibe of 'we can and will still shoot you all'. This is peak Metallica, and especially vocally for James.
And Jason’s bass is thumpin. This is one the greatest concerts of all time, not just one of their best. I LITERALLY listen to Metallica everyday for the last nearly 2 years...they’re the band that got me into metal and into drums 13 years ago. Their music will live forever. To celebrate the bands 40th anniversary and my tribute to them, I’m gettin my first tattoo this year in honor of Metallica.
@@vananon51 Hell yea dude! That’s what’s up. Good on you. As much shit as they’ve gotten over the years, they’re still one of the best metal bands ever. That can never be taken away from them. 👍💪
@sadsadsa asadasd you have no idea what a good snare sounds like then. That original Sad But True snare was more than likely how they made it sound in the original mix of that performance, not how it sounded at the actual concert. This is much more realistic. This snare sounds great.

I find it hard to believe that any of the members of Metallica have felt a high as high as playing in this incredible environment. I remember when I played in front of 500 screaming people who were feeding us energy and we gave it back and it was the higehst high I ever felt. 1.6 million people doing that? absolutely unfathomable. mesmerizing. this great festival, and a huge moment in history. Great stuff here. Thank you for the upload.
Mexico city just beats this for me for the shit binge and purge recording when it comes to Metallica. Alice in chains unplugged would be my vote for best live performance ever
Alice in chains unplugged is a good choice...@@rksrfc id argue it's probably better to call this the best live metal performance ever... For example, a LOT of people would point to Freddie reuniting with Queen for Live Aid...
19:33 I can't imagine what James must have felt at that moment. Looking out across a sea of 1.5 million people, in a country that was far from friendly to America. And just seeing that no matter how much dislike countries (or their governments) can have for each other, a giant metal concert is enough to forget about all that.
This is Metallica firing on all 12 cylinders. This is the band I knew very well live back then. They still crush but not like this anymore. Not even close. Just glad they can still play and tour. Hopefully I get to see them one more time. That will be number 13 for me. 🤘
Yeah, its really terrible to watch them go from this to the Globalist kiss asses they are now. They couldn't be more unmetal these days.Fucking politics man..
I watched this gig in 1997 on bootleg VHS, and this moment was with me all time long! What da shit it was???Always one guestion. But I was absolutely happy when I find it on new box of black album, they save it, it was part of history, not problem of bootleg vhs! So I thinking it was God! Or die spirit of communism lol

@joeaardvark you hit it on the head. That's my single favorite moment of any video of any Metallica concert. The crowd is absolutely whipped into a f*cking frenzy at that point and the energy is just through the roof. Love it.

In my opinion this is the best concert Metallica has had.If not for the performance but for the sheer amount of audience. The fact that they pulled it off seamlessly compliments and speaks volumes about Metallica as a whole
this new audio is absolutely insane, it was much needed for such an important and epic concert, this is probbably the best black album era live show that is officially available now
I don’t know how EVERYONE isn’t a METALLICA fan. No one tops them. Never and no one will be better than this band in the history of the world. That’s why they’re the only ones still standing
These days I listen to more prog rock, after spending years consuming only electronic music. I'm 43 years old and I recently started revisiting the bands I listened to when I was a teenager. It's funny that my wife and 18 year old daughter had never seen me headbanging, they look at me as strange person... Who is this crazy person we have at home? lol I want to see their expressions when I revisit Slayer, Pantera, Sepultura, Anthrax, Sarcófágo, Kreator or even harder, Moonspell, Napalm, Cradle of Filth, Deicide, Impaled Nazarene, Mayhem, Immortal, Emperor LOL...
This summarizes what it is when a band delivers 100% of its soul, mind and dedication to perform a concert at a so freaking amazing level to the public
Roadcrew are always forgotten. Can you imagine trying to set up with 100 Russians who had no idea of what to do, soldiers being threatening and interpreters getting it wrong everywhere? And the load out?? 😅

It is better to try and do a good thing and fail then never try at all. Gorbachov died thinking himself a failure but he allowed a whole generation to grow up in freedom. Godspeed and thanks for trying
For me the best concert ever by any band. With Creeping Death as ultimo primo song. Jason full blown with his voice of doom. Man those were the days! That crowd was ff-ing mad! Those soldiers too! Sheer madness! Suited the band as well!
This sound is so great that it seems like it was recorded in a studio.
Im not sure if its mentioned here yet but 48:40 is where they are icing down Lars' finger after he busted it on the snare drum! Insane man just insane! 🤘🏻Fuckin love these guys!
Until he left, he was "the new guy." He wasn't the "Jason Newsted" we see him as today, he was just "not Cliff." When he left, I think people started to notice what exactly he brought to the band and began to notice just how much they would miss it. Not to say Rob's bad, he's a killer bassist and his voice is just getting better and better, but he's still no Jason.
Wow I never knew this existed.. man I know about all the shows but I don't remember this one.. excellent find... Old Metallica well not much could beat them at that time..
To all the people that love the Moscow 1991 concert: Greg Fidelman made a remix of this show for the Deluxe Boxset. Unfortunately, he changed the drum sound to make it sound like the Lars of today. Thanks for this post! Yep, I didn't like so much the mix of the Deluxe Box Set... also Jason's vocals are somehow and for fucks sake lowered. After hearing the Randy Staub mix for years... they screwed it big for the DBS of the Black Album.
@@bruceprophet8367 One possibility is that the masters with the Randy mix were lost, it is also possible that Randy did not mix the entire concert and the band wanted the sound of the entire concert to be more consistent. Also in the band's forum, one of those in charge of making the box said that not the whole show was recorded on multitrack and had to be patched with SBD audio, that can be heard in One before reaching the chorus.

I'm 37 years old, I started listening to Metallica in 1997. Looking at this video today, tears fall on my face for having lived one of the best phases of my life. thank you Metallica for being a part of my life. That was the best concert I've ever seen from a band! 🤘🎸
I remember my friends and I gathering around the stereo to hear the new Metallica release in '91. The radio station gave the time and we were pumped to hear the new song Enter Sandman. We listened, waiting for it to get good but the song was over before it ever happened. A cash grab. We felt cheated. There were other bands, sure, but why them? I'd lost count of how many times I bought Kill em All. I wore it down every time. Never bought anything after Justice. Still a good live band tho.

The Sea of People. Unfortunately, in 1991 I was 6 and too young to see my Legends for live... Now, in 2023, I showed this concert to my 6 years old daughter and told her it is Greatest Metal Band Ever
That’s funny I was born in 84 and was just showing my kids this video….😂

I absolutely love this era of Metallica. The black clothes, the black guitars, Lars' white Tama and the hair most importantly.
And Lars' skills of course
I've always loved the 85'-86' era with the dirty white sneakers and ripped jeans topped off with insane headbanging 95 percent of the show.

That part really is such a wholesome bro moment
1,6 M people
They knew it paid off way before this.
The aliens were pleased with their work
Instead of fog, I think that could be dust lifted into the air from the sheer amount of people moving around.

Jason was a force of nature
Bro the nazi march he does … gutsy, love it!
I'm a guitarist, and the biggest crowd I played for was about 400 people. I can't imagine playing to 1.6 million. Metallica is 100% an American band. One of the greatest!

@@tersan8547es more American than danish, he sounds like a surfer guy from California

I was paying attention to their faces: they seemed to be absorbing everything, enjoying as much as they could. I think it´s a once in a lifetime event.
I knowww
I saw somewhere where James said it was the most nervous they’d ever been before a show because the moment was bigger than music but that’s what brought everyone together was the music.
You already know they felt like gods, and for all intents and purposes, they were
Did I see military helicopters hovering over the stadium? Kinda giving off a vibe of 'we can and will still shoot you all'. This is peak Metallica, and especially vocally for James.
We now have THE definitive version of this show. Sounds insane. Lars’s floor toms and kick drum are absolutely booming! Good god……..
And Jason’s bass is thumpin. This is one the greatest concerts of all time, not just one of their best. I LITERALLY listen to Metallica everyday for the last nearly 2 years...they’re the band that got me into metal and into drums 13 years ago. Their music will live forever. To all the people that love the Moscow 1991 concert:

To get an idea of how great this concert could have sounded in the Deluxe Boxset:

After hearing the Randy Staub mix for years... they screwed it big for the DBS of the Black Album.
Strange, I actually prefer drum sound of this new version
@@bruceprophet8367 One possibility is that the masters with the Randy mix were lost, it is also possible that Randy did not mix the entire concert and the band wanted the sound of the entire concert to be more consistent.

I'd lost count of how many times I bought Kill em All. I wore it down every time. Never bought anything after Justice. Still a good live band tho.
What a pity that time is running out! But Metallica and AC / DC were a breath of fresh air for us at the time. Thanks to them for that!.I was 23 then
Prime Metallica right there. Guys were literally at the top of their game. The energy and power from these guys was intense back then. James was on fire all night!
As the child of someone who escaped from the Soviet Union, watching this crowd (the soldiers!) brings me much joy. peace and love, my friends
Absolutely criminal they didn't finish MOP. The back end riffs and solo are killer on that song.
Totally agree, man!
literally, i was waiting for that solo 😭
James was getting pissed at the crowd for not reacting and singing along. The more they didn't react, the harder he played and sang. Outstanding
I don't think he quite had a grasp on what he was surrounded by lol.
@@kskip4242 for real, damn KGB in the crowd looking sideways at everyone lol
@@sydneymarie67 yep 😆
Lol I know LOL I think he got the message that they don’t speak English except they knew me tal Lica Because that’s what they were chanting was their name LOL and I apologize for the misspelling of Metallica but that’s what it sounded like to me so that’s why I spelled it that way LOL
@The ElSliceO 😂👍
1.6 million people. I don't care what anybody says Metallica is are The Greatest musicians of all time. No one will ever top them. Not a rock band, not hip hop artist, pop artist. No other musician will ever top them. My only hope is that one soon Metallica gets to do a Superbowl halftime show
We can only wish....slip knot an metallica next year...this year was beyond fing horrible!!!
A pregnant lip sinking has been...lmao
Damn, his vocals were strong back then! 28 years old. Wow.
It's a real shame he didn't take better care of his voice over the years.
@@kskip4242 he still has it imo
@@fellowcomrade7914 He has very low power these days. He does a lot more actual singing these days than he did back then and it's not really my thing. He doesn't have that guttural power behind his voice like he used to have.
@@kskip4242 I saw him live, he still better than Vince Neil lmao
@@kskip4242 what would one expect from a frontman performing for over 30years? Clean crisp metal raspy growly vocals suited to tastes of early albums?? James is exactly like red wine, gets better with age, never ending.
Forever will Jason Newsted me immortalized in the world of metal with his stage presence at this venue!
That's what I keep saying this guy is so freaking cool man
Lars down at the tent city interviewing the locals about the problems they face is pretty cool. I can see Lars doing a Vice documentary now
Vice is garbage now.
@@bonechip01 as is Lars
Only kidding lol
That's took a lot of balls for him to do that.
september 28th of 1991 was the bands absolute peak. period.
Peaked once at Seattle '89 too imo
100%
@@ishtiaquehossain6350 I don't think you understand what it means to peak at something lol. Seattle was a great concert but it just was nowhere near as good as this.
I seriously wonder how many Iives the song Fade To Black has saved. Just knowing the greatest metal band of their time felt the same way, made you feel not alone. Gave me the strength to get through some very dark times. Goosebumps every time. 😎🤘
